An EV battery warranty can cover a manufacturing defect, excessive loss of usable capacity, or both—but those are different promises. The time and mileage limit, capacity threshold, test method, remedy, and exclusions depend on the vehicle, model year, configuration, and market. Start with the warranty booklet for your exact vehicle and its in-service date.
What does an EV battery warranty cover?
Most importantly, distinguish a defect from gradual capacity loss. Defect coverage concerns problems with materials or workmanship. Capacity coverage applies only when the battery’s measured usable capacity falls below a specified threshold during the covered period. Some warranties describe both; others may treat ordinary capacity fade as normal wear and cover only loss deemed excessive.
A warranty’s headline duration alone does not tell you whether a particular battery problem qualifies. Check these terms in the vehicle’s warranty documents:
- Time and distance: The years and miles or kilometres, whichever comes first, and the date coverage begins.
- Covered condition: Whether the warranty addresses defects, capacity loss, or both.
- Capacity threshold and test: The percentage that triggers coverage and who determines state of health, using which diagnostic process.
- Service and remedy: Whether an authorized service center must diagnose the issue, who pays diagnostic labor, and whether the manufacturer may repair the pack, replace modules, or use remanufactured or refurbished parts.
- Exclusions and ownership: Any exclusions, required maintenance, evidence needed to establish the cause, and rules for a second owner. Transferability is not established by the examples below, so confirm it in the specific booklet.
How long is an EV battery warranty?
There is no single term for every EV. As examples—not universal coverage—BMW’s 2026 U.S. warranty booklet covers high-voltage battery assemblies and internal components for defects in materials or workmanship for 96 months or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Ford’s cited owner-manual warranty page describes eight years or 160,000 kilometres for excessive capacity loss. Its displayed market and vehicle applicability must be checked before applying those terms to a particular U.S. vehicle.

These figures cannot be compared as if they were identical promises: they use different distance units, and coverage conditions differ. Check the exact market-specific warranty document for the vehicle you are considering or own.
Does an EV battery warranty cover capacity loss?
Sometimes, but only under the terms stated for that vehicle. BMW’s 2026 U.S. booklet separately covers capacity loss for 2026 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) if usable net capacity, or state of health, falls below 70% during the 96-month/100,000-mile term. An authorized BMW center must confirm the result, and BMW says it will restore capacity to at least 70%. The booklet also notes that capacity loss varies with use and environmental factors.

Compatible with Flooded, AGM, GEL, and EFB batteries. Not for lithium batteries, non-12V batteries (6V/8V/24V), or motorcycles below 30Ah. For 6V testing, choose BA101 Plus. For 24V testing, choose BA101 PRO
Ford’s cited owner-manual page calls gradual capacity loss normal wear and tear, then defines excessive loss separately. For the listed vehicles, the threshold is below 70% of beginning-of-life capacity; for cutaway or chassis-cab vehicles, it is below 65%. An authorized EV Certified Ford dealer determines capacity. Ford selects the measurement method and decides whether to repair or replace components, including through remanufactured or refurbished parts. Check that page’s displayed market and vehicle applicability before relying on it for a specific vehicle.
What California’s battery warranty rule requires
California Code of Regulations, title 13, section 1962.8 sets battery warranty requirements for qualifying battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles, with thresholds that vary by model year:

| Model year | Minimum state-of-health threshold | Warranty term |
|---|---|---|
| 2026–2030 | 70% | Eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first |
| 2031 and later | 75% | Eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first |
The rule addresses no-charge repair or replacement, authorized service, diagnostic labor, parts availability, and certain permitted non-new original-equipment replacement parts whose performance is appropriate for the vehicle’s age and mileage. It allows an exclusion when the manufacturer demonstrates that abuse, neglect, or improper maintenance directly caused the need for repair. These requirements have a defined California and model-year scope; they should not be treated as identical rules for every vehicle or every state. Read California Code of Regulations, title 13, section 1962.8.
Does the federal eight-year emissions warranty cover an EV battery?
Federal emissions-warranty rules include certain batteries used as renewable energy storage systems in EVs and plug-in hybrids, along with related charging, storage, and power-transmission components. Under 40 CFR 85.2103, the cited provision is optional before model year 2027 for specified light-duty vehicles and trucks at or below 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating. The rule sets an eight-year/80,000-mile period for specified major emission-control components, subject to its scope and conditions. This is an emissions-defect warranty framework, not a blanket guarantee against ordinary battery degradation or range loss. See 40 CFR 85.2103.

How battery-durability standards differ from an owner’s warranty
A separate federal rule, 40 CFR 86.1815-27, sets durability requirements measured across vehicle test groups, not a threshold that an individual owner can automatically claim under a battery warranty. For model years 2027–2029, it requires at least 70% of vehicles in a test group to retain at least 70% of certification range. For model year 2030 onward, it requires an 80% average for the test group. The useful-life period is 10 years or 150,000 miles, and the rule says separate warranty requirements remain in force. See 40 CFR 86.1815-27.

- Identify the vehicle precisely. Confirm model year, configuration, original market, and in-service date.
- Check remaining coverage. Compare elapsed time and odometer reading with both the warranty term and distance limit.
- Read the transfer provisions. Confirm whether coverage continues after a sale and whether the next owner must meet any conditions.
- Request documented battery-health information. Ask what measurement was used and whether the manufacturer or its authorized service network must confirm capacity for a claim.
- Review service and repair history. Look for battery or high-voltage-system work, maintenance records relevant to exclusions, and any conditions the warranty requires.
- Check applicable local requirements. If California rules may apply, confirm eligibility and requirements for the specific vehicle and model year.
What happens if the battery fails after the warranty expires?
After the applicable warranty ends, the manufacturer terms described here do not establish a right to a free repair or replacement. The remedy and cost will depend on the problem, vehicle, and any other coverage that applies. Ask an appropriately qualified service center for a diagnosis and written estimate, and check whether any separate coverage applies to the specific fault before authorizing repairs.
