Europe’s First Electric Fire Truck? What the 2018 Linz Report Claimed

A 2018 report called a tactical electric fire vehicle in Linz “Europe’s first,” but the priority claim remains unconfirmed. Later deployments in Vienna, Berlin, Garching and Kilkenny show different electric fire-appliance roles and operating profiles.

A 2018 report described an all-electric tactical fire vehicle entering service at FHKW-Mitte fire station in Linz, Austria, and called it “Europe’s first electric fire truck ready for rapid response.” That superlative is the report’s claim: the available record does not independently confirm it with a contemporaneous source from Linz or the manufacturer. Later electric fire-appliance deployments show how the technology developed, but they do not resolve which vehicle came first.

What the Linz report said

New Atlas published its report on April 5, 2018, placing the vehicle at the FHKW-Mitte fire station in Linz. Its “Europe’s first” wording should be treated as an attributed historical claim, not an established fact. No contemporaneous primary-source confirmation of the Linz vehicle or its priority is available in the sources cited here. New Atlas’s 2018 report is the source for the specific headline claim.

The label “electric fire truck” also needs context. Fire-service vehicles differ in their roles and equipment: a full-size pumper, a rescue appliance and a compact vehicle designed for narrow streets do not face the same demands. A vehicle may propel itself electrically while carrying a fuel-powered generator or range extender for backup. Those distinctions matter more than the label alone.

How later European deployments compare

Subsequent examples document electric fire appliances in service or testing in Vienna, Berlin, Garching and Kilkenny. They are not directly comparable: their jobs, equipment, routes and operating evidence differ.

Location and date Vehicle and reported specifications Reported service evidence
Vienna, 2023 Rosenbauer reported two RT-series fire engines handed over to Vienna. Each had a 66 kWh battery, 360 kW peak electric drive and a 225 kW Energy Backup System. Rosenbauer, 2023 The cited report documents the handover and specifications; it does not provide the operational results listed for Berlin or Garching.
Berlin, 2024 report on a January 2021–February 2022 test phase Five additional Rosenbauer RT vehicles entered service after a test phase. The Energy Backup System is described as a fuel-powered generator. Rosenbauer, 2024 Rosenbauer reported almost 1,400 missions, over 770 operating hours and more than 13,000 km over 13 months. It said over 90% of missions were completed in purely electric operation. Berlin fire-service calculations, as reported by Rosenbauer, put CO2 savings at more than ten tonnes versus a conventionally powered vehicle.
Garching, 2025 TUM reported two electric firefighting and rescue vehicles used on its campus. Its account describes a biodiesel-powered range extender. Technical University of Munich, 2025 The university reported an average route distance of 2.4 km, five to six calls per day and an average call duration of about 30 minutes. It said stationary-vehicle exhaust fumes were absent in over 97% of operations.
Kilkenny, 2026 Fire Ireland reported a compact electric appliance for narrow historic streets, carrying 300 litres of water and using a HiCAFS unit. Fire Ireland, 2026 The cited report describes the vehicle and its intended local role; it does not give a comparable fleet trial or emissions figure.

These figures come from the manufacturer, university or fire-service reporting identified in each row, not from a common independent test. The Berlin and Garching percentages use different settings and descriptions, so they should not be combined or treated as a shared benchmark.

What makes an electric fire appliance suitable for response?

Battery capacity alone does not determine whether a vehicle can meet a fire service’s needs. The relevant comparison is between the apparatus and its actual duty cycle: what it carries, how it is driven, where it goes, how long calls last and what backup is available.

  • ENGAGING PLAYTIME FOR BOTH INDOORS & OUTDOORS- Nothing beats the value of creative playtime that engages the imagination. With our big red fire truck, your kids can play out infinite scenarios that engage them in logical thinking & solution finding.
  • Role and access: Establish whether the vehicle is a pumper, rescue appliance or compact access unit, and whether its size suits the roads and buildings it must reach.
  • Firefighting equipment: Check pump operation, water and foam capacity, and any specialist system. The Kilkenny report, for example, specifies 300 litres of water and a HiCAFS unit.
  • Propulsion and backup: Distinguish battery-electric drive from the whole vehicle’s energy system. Berlin’s Energy Backup System is described as a fuel-powered generator; TUM’s range extender uses biodiesel.
  • Duty cycle: Consider typical route distance, call frequency and call duration. TUM’s short campus routes and roughly 30-minute average calls describe that operation, not a universal fire-service pattern.
  • Charging and readiness: Assess whether the station can charge the vehicle between calls and whether the backup system supports the service’s required response profile. The cited reports do not provide a common charging comparison.
  • Operational evidence: Give more weight to results from the intended service than to a headline specification, while keeping each operator’s figures within its own test conditions.

What the evidence establishes—and what it does not

The Linz story is a specific 2018 report about a vehicle assigned to a fire station; it is not enough to verify that vehicle as Europe’s first. Later reporting establishes that electric fire appliances continued to be deployed and assessed in Europe, including full-size RT vehicles and a compact vehicle for narrow streets. Those examples demonstrate varied approaches, not a definitive chronology of Europe’s first electric fire truck.

As the technology’s role is described by its operators, some missions can be completed without using a combustion-powered backup, while a generator or range extender may still be part of the vehicle. Emergency One’s 2020 launch announcement called its E1 EV0 “the world’s first all-electric pumping appliance”; that is the company’s claim about its own product and does not settle the Linz priority question. I hope that many more fire departments will follow suit.” That conclusion reflects TUM’s campus experience, rather than a blanket finding for every vehicle, station or emergency-response pattern. Technical University of Munich, September 22, 2025.
