The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) argued in 2022 that an E85-powered pickup could produce fewer lifetime greenhouse-gas emissions than a same-size electric pickup charged with fossil-generated electricity. That is a conditional claim attributed to RFA president and CEO Geoff Cooper—not proof that ethanol is generally cleaner than electric vehicles. The article reporting the claim does not publish the model, its assumptions, or its numerical results, so readers cannot independently reproduce the comparison.
What comparison did the RFA make?
Chuck Abbott’s January 13, 2022, Successful Farming report described an RFA analysis comparing the lifetime greenhouse-gas emissions of two same-size pickups: one running on E85—a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline—and one electric pickup running on fossil-generated electricity. Cooper argued that a comparison should account for emissions before a vehicle is driven, including electricity generation and battery manufacturing. He said: “The upstream emissions associated with electricity generation and battery manufacturing are often overlooked, giving the false impression that electric vehicles are zero-emission vehicles. The report also mentions cornfields and ethanol production, but it does not provide the RFA model, the vehicles’ specifications, the electricity mix, ethanol-production assumptions, system boundaries, or a numerical emissions result. The report is therefore evidence of the claim and the debate, not enough information to verify which pickup came out ahead under the analysis.
Why the result depends on assumptions
A lifecycle comparison can change with the choices made about both vehicles and their energy sources. Before treating a result as broadly applicable, readers need to know what was compared and how emissions were counted.

- Electricity supply: Charging on a fossil-intensive grid differs from charging on lower-carbon electricity. The report describes the electric pickup as using fossil-generated electricity but does not specify the grid mix.
- Vehicle and battery: Vehicle class, energy consumption, battery size, battery-manufacturing emissions, and lifetime mileage affect the comparison. The report does not state these inputs beyond describing the pickups as the same size.
- Ethanol pathway: Corn production, fuel processing, the treatment of co-products, and the E85 blend affect the result. The report does not publish the relevant modeling assumptions.
- Lifecycle boundary and unit: A useful comparison should disclose whether it includes fuel or electricity production, vehicle and battery manufacturing, and use-phase emissions—and report results using a clear unit, such as greenhouse gases per vehicle-mile. The article does not provide a full boundary or a result that can be checked against such a unit.
These are questions a reader would need answered to evaluate the RFA claim. They are not a description of assumptions the article confirms the RFA used.
What the article says about corn and rural concerns
The 2022 report said that “as much as 40% of U.S. corn production” went to ethanol and co-products, describing this as output from 34 million of the 85 million acres harvested for corn the prior year. Those figures belong to the article’s 2022 account; they should not be read as a current share. The hearing behind the dispute
The claim was part of a broader policy discussion, not a vehicle test. The U.S. House Committee on Agriculture held a hearing titled “Implications of Electric Vehicle Investments for Agriculture and Rural America” on January 12, 2022. Its official record lists Cooper as RFA president and CEO and identifies witnesses from automotive, labor, General Motors, convenience-store, and utility interests; it also links Cooper’s submitted testimony. Abbott’s report said Representative Abigail Spanberger announced legislation to include EV charging stations in a USDA rural energy cost-sharing program. That is a report of a 2022 policy proposal, not current guidance on program eligibility. Cooper called for technology-neutral, performance-based decarbonization policy focused on reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and increasing fuel efficiency without prescribing particular vehicles or fuels. General Motors representative David Strickland offered the opposing emphasis: “The future of ground transportation is electrification.”

What can—and cannot—be concluded
The reported comparison supports a limited conclusion: under the RFA’s assumptions, an E85 pickup may have had lower lifetime emissions than an electric pickup using fossil-generated electricity. Because the article does not disclose those assumptions or the numerical result, it cannot establish that outcome independently, extend it to other electricity mixes or ethanol pathways, or settle which technology has lower lifecycle emissions in general. The 2022 report also cannot serve as a current, comprehensive emissions comparison.
