Viscosity grade and oil specification are different requirements. The SAE grade (such as 5W-30) describes how an oil flows in standardized tests. It does not prove that the oil has the engine-protection performance, emissions-system compatibility, or manufacturer approval your car, truck, generator, mower, or other equipment requires.
Choose oil by matching both the exact SAE grade and every API, ILSAC, ACEA, or original-equipment-manufacturer (OEM) requirement in the engine or equipment manual. SAE International explicitly limits its viscosity standard to rheological classification; API and other systems address performance and application requirements.

What the two terms actually mean
Viscosity grade answers “How does it flow?”
SAE J300 is the standard used to classify engine-oil viscosity. Its scope is deliberately narrow: it defines limits for a classification of lubricating oils “in rheological terms only.” Other oil characteristics are not included. The current listing, SAE J300_202405, was revised May 9, 2024.

A multigrade label combines a low-temperature grade marked with “W” and a high-temperature grade. In a label such as 5W-30, the first part describes measured low-temperature behavior and the second describes viscosity at operating-temperature test conditions. The numbers are not a quality score, a wear rating, or a statement that the oil is suitable for every engine in that temperature range.

Specification answers “Will it protect this application?”
An API service category, ILSAC standard, ACEA sequence, or OEM approval sets performance and application requirements beyond flow behavior. Those requirements can include deposit control, oxidation resistance, wear protection, fuel-economy limits, turbocharger protection, low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) control, timing-chain wear, and compatibility with emissions after-treatment equipment.
Two oils can share the same SAE grade and still be unsuitable substitutes because their performance categories or approvals differ. Conversely, an oil with an appropriate performance category can still be wrong if its viscosity does not match the manual.
How to read an engine-oil label

“Synthetic,” a familiar brand name, or a viscosity printed in large type is not a substitute for the required performance specification. Treat each part of the label as a separate check.

In a 5W-30 label, “5W” identifies the oil’s low-temperature viscosity class and “30” identifies its high-temperature viscosity class under SAE J300 tests. The “W” means winter, not weight. It does not mean the oil remains exactly the same thickness at every temperature, nor does it prescribe a minimum outdoor temperature for a particular vehicle.
Engine design determines which grades are permitted. Bearing clearances, oil-pump capacity, variable-valve-timing hardware, turbochargers, hydraulic tensioners, and emissions controls can all influence the specified grade. Ambient temperature is only one operating factor. Follow the chart and notes in the exact manual rather than selecting a grade from climate alone.
If a manual lists several permitted grades, use its temperature chart and operating guidance. A grade that appears close numerically may still be excluded by the manufacturer, especially where fuel economy, start-up pressure, or after-treatment durability is involved.

What API, ILSAC, ACEA and OEM specifications add
API service categories
API categories classify performance for intended service. API’s Oil Categories page lists API SP as a gasoline category and CK-4 and FA-4 as diesel categories. The page also provides compatibility cautions and tells owners to consult their manuals before using the charts.
API states that its latest gasoline category includes the performance of earlier gasoline categories. That statement should not be generalized to diesel oils. Diesel category transitions can have specific limits, and the engine maker may require an exact category or an additional approval.
ILSAC GF-6A and GF-6B
API’s chart identifies ILSAC GF-6A and GF-6B. GF-6B applies only to SAE 0W-16 oils. The standards address protections including LSPI and timing-chain wear, along with other gasoline-engine performance and fuel-economy requirements. A current ILSAC category is not automatically acceptable in an engine whose manual specifies another grade or category.
Diesel CK-4 and FA-4
API describes FA-4 as covering certain XW-30 oils for selected high-speed, four-stroke diesel engines. FA-4 is not backward-compatible with CK-4 and several earlier C categories. Do not pour FA-4 into a diesel engine merely because both labels say “30” or because FA-4 is newer. The engine manufacturer must specifically allow it.
ACEA sequences and manufacturer approvals
ACEA publishes European sequences for service-fill oils. The available document, ACEA European Oil Sequences 2016 Update, Revision 3, is dated July 2020. It is useful for understanding the sequence system, but it should not be presented as the latest sequence without checking ACEA for a newer edition.

ACEA notes that individual manufacturers may impose additional or more stringent parameters. An ACEA claim therefore does not necessarily replace a named OEM approval. If the manual calls for a manufacturer specification, look for that exact approval or documented compliance, not merely a similar ACEA letter or viscosity.

Why the equipment manual comes first
“Equipment” can mean a passenger car, diesel pickup, tractor, generator, compressor, lawn machine, or industrial engine. Fuel type, model year, emissions hardware, duty cycle, oil-capacity design, warranty terms, and jurisdiction can change the required oil. No universal grade or category can be prescribed from the word equipment alone.
API’s direct instruction is that vehicle owners should refer to their owner’s manuals before consulting its category charts. ACEA likewise advises consulting the manual or a dealer when manufacturer recommendations are uncertain. Use the manual’s lubrication section, maintenance schedule, technical-service updates, and any emissions-system notes together.
Record these requirements before shopping
- Exact SAE viscosity grade or permitted grade range.
- Required API category and whether the engine is gasoline or diesel.
- Required ILSAC category, if stated.
- ACEA sequence and every named OEM approval or specification.
- Restrictions for particulate filters, catalytic converters, turbochargers, or other after-treatment equipment.
- Special rules for fuel sulfur, severe service, storage, break-in, or extended drains.
- Any regional or model-year qualification in the manual.
A step-by-step method for selecting oil
- Identify the exact engine and equipment. Record manufacturer, model, model year, engine code, fuel type, and emissions equipment. Do not rely on a similar-looking machine or a family name alone.
- Open the correct manual. Use the edition for that model and market. Locate the oil-viscosity chart and the performance/specification paragraph; they may appear in different sections.
- Write the requirements separately. Make one line for SAE grade, one for API/ILSAC/ACEA, and one for OEM approvals. Include footnotes such as “only where permitted” or “not for engines with…”
- Check the container’s SAE grade. Match the complete multigrade designation, including the W number and the operating-temperature number. Do not treat a neighboring grade as equivalent.
- Check the performance language. Confirm the required API category, ILSAC designation, ACEA sequence, and OEM approval. “Meets” or “suitable for” wording may not be the same as a formal approval; use the manufacturer’s documentation when the distinction matters.
- Verify diesel compatibility. For diesel engines, confirm whether CK-4, FA-4, or another category is specified. Never assume a newer category is interchangeable, particularly FA-4.
- Check the API mark when applicable. API’s Engine Oil Licensing & Certification System is a voluntary program that licenses quality marks, monitors licensed oils, and tests packaged and bulk samples through its aftermarket audit program, which has operated since 1994. A mark is a useful authenticity and category check, not a replacement for matching the manual.
- Resolve conflicts before filling. If the manual, label, retailer listing, or manufacturer data disagree, stop and obtain clarification from the equipment maker or an authorized service source. Do not choose based on the newest-looking label.
- Document the decision. Keep a photo of the manual page and the oil label with maintenance records. This prevents a later top-up with a different category and helps preserve warranty evidence.
How to compare two oils after both pass the manual check
Comparison is meaningful only after each candidate satisfies the equipment’s required grade and performance specification. Then evaluate the following points:

| Operating conditions | Does the manual impose rules for severe duty, fuel sulfur, storage, or climate? | Those conditions can change the permitted product or service procedure. |
| Label and licensing | Are claims clear, current, and supported by the relevant licensing or approval documentation? | Clear evidence reduces the risk of confusing a marketing phrase with a required standard. |
Only after these checks should secondary factors such as package size, availability, or formulation type influence the purchase. A lower price or “full synthetic” description cannot cure a missing approval.

Correction: Match the manual’s performance category and OEM requirement in addition to the grade.

“Synthetic oil is automatically better for every engine.”
Why it fails: Base-oil marketing does not prove compliance with a specified API, ILSAC, ACEA, or OEM requirement.
Correction: Treat “synthetic” as a formulation description and verify the required approvals independently.
“The newest API category can replace any older one.”
Why it fails: API’s gasoline guidance includes backward-performance statements, but its diesel guidance says this is usually, not always, the case. FA-4 is specifically not backward-compatible with CK-4 and several earlier C categories.
Correction: Follow the engine maker’s category instruction, especially on diesel equipment.
“A 0W-16 or other thin grade is better because it saves fuel.”
Why it fails: GF-6B, for example, applies only to SAE 0W-16, and an engine must be designed and approved for that grade.

“A European sequence is interchangeable with an OEM approval.”
Why it fails: ACEA states that manufacturers may require additional or more stringent parameters.
Correction: Find the named OEM approval or contact the manufacturer when the manual requires one.
“The chart on a bottle settles a model-specific question.”
Why it fails: Category charts cannot account for every model-year, market, emissions-system, or warranty variation.
Correction: Use the manual as the controlling source and the chart as a supporting cross-check.
What to do when the label or manual is unclear
- Only the viscosity is listed: Obtain the missing performance requirement before purchasing. Do not infer it from the engine’s age or fuel type.
- The manual lists an obsolete category: Check the equipment maker’s service bulletin or current technical support. Do not assume the latest API category is acceptable.
- The bottle lists several categories: Confirm that the exact required category is included and that no limitation excludes your engine.
- The product claims an approval without a number or document: Verify the approval through the oil maker or equipment manufacturer before treating it as compliant.
- Two manuals conflict: Confirm the engine code and market, then ask the manufacturer or authorized service provider. A generic online chart is not enough.
- You already installed a questionable oil: Avoid extending the service interval. Record the product, consult the manufacturer or qualified technician, and follow the corrective procedure they specify.
Service intervals are a separate decision
The correct grade and specification do not establish an oil-change interval. Interval requirements depend on the engine maker’s schedule, oil capacity, monitoring system, duty cycle, idling, towing, dust, temperature, fuel quality, and emissions hardware. Use the maintenance schedule for the exact equipment and region.
Do not extend a drain interval because a container says “long life,” and do not shorten or lengthen an interval solely because the oil is synthetic. If the manual provides separate normal and severe-service schedules, classify the actual use honestly and follow the applicable one.
The practical rule
Read the label as two independent checks: SAE grade for viscosity behavior and API, ILSAC, ACEA, or OEM specification for performance and application. Both must agree with the equipment manual. When they do not, the oil is not a safe choice merely because one number looks familiar.
