Tesla Plaid is the performance powertrain and trim that Elon Musk announced in September 2019 as the step beyond Ludicrous. The name comes from the 1987 comedy Spaceballs, where “plaid” is portrayed as faster than “ludicrous.” It is not a universal software toggle for every Tesla: the original announcement covered Model S, Model X and the next-generation Roadster, while Tesla currently sells a production Model S Plaid and has also applied the powertrain to Model X.
What Elon Musk actually announced
On September 11–12, 2019, Musk described Tesla’s next performance level with the line: “the only thing beyond Ludicrous is Plaid.” Contemporary reports said the proposed Plaid powertrain used three motors and was intended for Model S, Model X and the next-generation Roadster. Musk later clarified that Model 3 and Model Y were not part of that original Plaid plan.

The announcement described a hardware configuration and branding strategy, not a setting that could be enabled on any Tesla through an ordinary software update. Whether a vehicle has Plaid depends on its model, powertrain and production configuration.
Why Tesla calls it “Plaid”
The joke comes from Spaceballs, Mel Brooks’s 1987 science-fiction parody. In the film’s speed sequence, a vehicle moves through increasingly absurd levels—“ludicrous speed” followed by “plaid.” Tesla had already used Ludicrous for its quickest acceleration setting, so Musk extended the film’s hierarchy with Plaid as the supposedly faster level.

That makes “Spaceballs Tesla mode” a useful shorthand for the reference, but “Plaid” is not the name of a film-themed driving mode shared across the Tesla range. In production vehicles it identifies a high-output powertrain and trim.
Ludicrous versus Plaid
| Comparison | Ludicrous | Plaid |
|---|---|---|
| Source of the name | The “ludicrous speed” gag in Spaceballs | The film’s even-faster “plaid” gag |
| What Tesla used it for | A high-performance acceleration setting and branding on earlier vehicles | A tri-motor performance powertrain and vehicle trim |
| 2019 announced vehicle scope | Existing Tesla performance products | Model S, Model X and the next-generation Roadster; Model 3 and Model Y were excluded from that plan |
| Current production example | Availability depends on the vehicle and model year | Model S Plaid, with Model X also adopting the Plaid powertrain |
The comparison is conceptual rather than a universal specification chart: Ludicrous configurations vary by model and year, while Tesla’s current Model S page provides the clearest production figures for Plaid.

How fast is the current Model S Plaid?
Tesla currently lists the Model S Plaid with a tri-motor powertrain and these headline figures:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- 1,020 horsepower
- 0–60 mph in 1.99 seconds
- 200 mph indicated top speed
- 9.23 seconds at 155 mph trap speed for the quarter mile
The 200-mph figure has an important qualification: Tesla says the indicated Plaid top speed requires a paid hardware upgrade and may not be available for the entire drive. It should therefore not be read as the standard, unrestricted top speed of every Model S Plaid.

Which Tesla models have Plaid?
Model S
Model S is the current, clearly documented production Plaid sedan. Tesla lists the tri-motor configuration, 1,020 hp and the acceleration, top-speed and quarter-mile figures above.
Model X
Tesla has applied the same Plaid powertrain to Model X. In Tesla’s performance account, Model X Plaid is described as capable of 0–100 km/h in 2.6 seconds. Exact equipment, availability and specifications can vary by market and production date, so buyers should use the current Model X listing for their region.

Musk’s clarification excluded Model 3 and Model Y from the original Plaid plan. A performance version of either model should not be called Plaid unless Tesla explicitly assigns that name to a production configuration.

What Plaid Track Mode adds
Plaid is primarily a powertrain and trim designation, while Track Mode is a separate vehicle feature intended for closed-course driving. Tesla says Plaid Track Mode helped Model S set production-electric-vehicle Nürburgring lap records in 2021 and again in 2023. Those record claims describe specific cars, software and track conditions; they do not mean every Plaid owner will reproduce the same lap time.
Track use also brings practical limits that the acceleration headline does not show, including tire condition, battery temperature, brakes, weather and driver skill. Public-road speed limits and local laws still apply.
What “Plaid mode” means in practice
When people ask how to activate “Plaid mode,” they are usually combining two different ideas:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Plaid: Tesla’s name for a high-performance, generally tri-motor powertrain and trim.
- Driving settings: software controls such as acceleration or Track Mode that may be available only on particular vehicles and configurations.
You cannot turn a non-Plaid Tesla into a Plaid car by selecting a menu option. Check the vehicle’s exact trim, motor configuration and regional equipment list instead.
Why the announcement still matters
The 2019 statement established “Plaid” as Tesla’s successor to the Ludicrous branding and connected the name to a recognizable movie joke. The production Model S Plaid later gave that label a concrete specification: three motors, 1,020 hp and sub-two-second claimed 0–60-mph acceleration. The result is a useful distinction between Musk’s original product announcement, Tesla’s present-day model listings and optional performance software such as Track Mode.
