Elon Musk did not transfer $27 billion to Donald Trump. On June 5, 2025, Tesla’s share-price collapse reduced the estimated market value of Musk’s holdings. Forbes put the intraday decline at about $26.7 billion; Bloomberg’s end-of-day estimate was approximately $34 billion.
Elon Musk did not hand $27 billion to Donald Trump. On June 5, 2025, Tesla’s share-price collapse sharply reduced the market value of Musk’s holdings, producing a temporary, mark-to-market decline in his estimated fortune.
Forbes estimated that Musk’s net worth fell by about $26.7 billion during the trading day, leaving him with an estimated fortune of roughly $388 billion. Bloomberg’s end-of-day estimate was higher, at approximately $34 billion.
Those numbers are not necessarily contradictory. They reflect different points in the trading session and different wealth-index methodologies. The central market story was straightforward: a public rupture between Trump and Musk helped trigger a steep Tesla selloff, and Tesla is the publicly traded Musk-linked asset whose value can be repriced instantly.

What happened between Trump and Musk?
The dispute escalated publicly on Thursday, June 5, 2025, after the former political allies exchanged attacks across their public platforms. The argument centered in part on legislation supported by Trump and criticized by Musk, but the financial significance went beyond the policy disagreement.
Trump threatened to consider cutting government contracts and subsidies connected to Musk’s companies. Reuters, via Investing.com, reported that Tesla shares fell more than 14% as the feud intensified and trading volume surged.
That threat mattered because Musk’s companies operate across sectors affected by government decisions, including transportation, space, communications, defense, regulation and public procurement. It also transformed what might otherwise have been a personal political dispute into a potential corporate-risk event.
Why did Tesla’s decline reduce Musk’s wealth so quickly?
Musk’s net worth is largely an estimate of the value of assets he owns or controls. A major component is his Tesla stake. When Tesla’s share price drops, the estimated value of that stake falls—even if Musk does not sell a single share.
Tesla’s 2024 proxy statement said Musk beneficially owned approximately 20.5% of the company as of March 31, 2024. That means a large move in Tesla’s market capitalization can translate into a multibillion-dollar change in the paper value of his holdings.
Forbes reported that Tesla declined about 14%, or roughly $47 per share, during the June 5 selloff, with most of Musk’s estimated loss occurring after the public conflict escalated. The basic chain was:
- Trump and Musk publicly attacked each other.
- Investors assessed the possibility of political retaliation or lost government support.
- Tesla shares fell sharply in heavy trading.
- The estimated value of Musk’s Tesla holdings fell with the stock price.
- Wealth indexes marked down Musk’s estimated net worth.
This is the cleanest explanation supported by the reported market movement and ownership data. It does not mean that the feud alone determined every dollar of the change, or that Tesla explains every component of Bloomberg’s larger estimate.
$27 billion or $34 billion: which figure is correct?
| Estimate | Reported decline | Measurement context |
|---|---|---|
| Forbes | Approximately $26.7 billion | Intraday estimate on June 5, 2025; the source of the $27 billion headline |
| Bloomberg | Approximately $34 billion | End-of-day estimate after Tesla’s decline and the wider market reaction |
The figures should be treated as time-specific estimates, not as a settled accounting of cash that disappeared. Billionaire wealth indexes update as public stocks move. They also use estimates for assets that do not trade openly, and their calculations can differ in timing and methodology.

Therefore, the most precise wording is: Forbes estimated that Musk became about $26.7 billion poorer during the June 5 trading day, while Bloomberg later estimated an approximately $34 billion decline by the end of the day.
Was Musk actually $27 billion poorer?
In terms of estimated net worth, yes—but not in the sense of losing $27 billion in cash.
The decline was primarily a mark-to-market loss. If Tesla shares recover, the estimated value of Musk’s stake can rise again without Musk receiving new money. If he sells shares after a decline, some consequences could become realized, but the headline estimates themselves do not indicate that he transferred or paid out $27 billion.
This distinction is important for any stockholder, not just a billionaire:

Why Tesla was the immediate transmission mechanism
Tesla is a public company with a continuously quoted share price. Investors can react to political news within seconds, and wealth trackers can use that price to update the estimated value of Musk’s stake.
Other Musk-linked companies are different. SpaceX and some other businesses are privately held or valued through funding rounds and secondary-market transactions. Their valuations do not change with the same transparency or minute-by-minute frequency as Tesla’s stock. A private-company valuation may remain unchanged in a wealth index until a new transaction or estimate becomes available.
That is why the most defensible explanation of the June 5 headline focuses on Tesla. It is not proof that Tesla was the only asset affected, nor that every dollar of the reported decline came from Tesla alone. It is the clearest visible mechanism connecting the political clash to Musk’s estimated wealth.
Why the government-contract threat mattered to investors
The Trump-Musk relationship had already moved beyond informal political support. Musk had participated in the administration’s Department of Government Efficiency effort. A January 20, 2025 White House executive order renamed the United States Digital Service as the United States DOGE Service within the Executive Office of the President and created a temporary DOGE organization intended to pursue an 18-month agenda.

That institutional connection made the fallout more consequential. A disagreement between two prominent individuals could raise questions about:
- Whether federal contracts involving Musk-linked companies might be reviewed or canceled;
- Whether subsidies or other forms of government support could be targeted;
- Whether regulation or permitting decisions could become more adversarial;
- Whether political uncertainty could affect investor confidence in Tesla or other companies.
At the same time, a threat or public statement is not the same as a completed contract cancellation, subsidy withdrawal or regulatory action. The June 5 market reaction reflected investors pricing in risk and uncertainty—not proof that all threatened measures would occur.
What the headline leaves out
It was not a permanent loss by definition
Market-based wealth changes can reverse. A later Tesla rally could restore some or all of the estimated decline, while further share-price weakness could increase it. The June 5 figures describe the value assigned to Musk’s assets at particular moments.
It was not a direct payment to Trump
The wording “Musk becomes $27 billion poorer” describes a decline in estimated asset value. It should not be read as Musk sending money to Trump, paying a penalty or funding the federal government.
Tesla’s stock price reflects more than one variable
The feud was a major catalyst for the reported selloff, but Tesla’s price can also respond to delivery results, earnings expectations, competition, product plans, management decisions, broader market conditions and investor sentiment. The available reporting supports a strong connection between the dispute and the June 5 decline, but it does not establish that the political conflict explains every movement in the stock.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this means for Tesla investors
The episode illustrated how a company’s share price can be affected by risks that are not visible in its vehicle lineup or quarterly sales figures. Tesla’s association with Musk means that his political activity, public statements and relationships with government officials can become relevant to the stock’s risk profile.
That does not provide a simple buy-or-sell conclusion. It does show why investors may separate at least three questions:
- Business performance: How are Tesla’s vehicles, energy products, margins and deliveries performing?
- Governance and concentration: How much does the company depend on one highly visible executive?
- Political and regulatory exposure: Could government relationships, contracts or policy changes affect the company’s prospects?
A sharp one-day move can reflect a sudden repricing of perceived risk rather than an immediate change in the number of cars Tesla can build. Conversely, a political dispute can have operational consequences if it affects contracts, subsidies, regulation, public trust or management attention.

Readers looking for background rather than a direct account of the June 2025 dispute may consider Walter Isaacson’s biography of Elon Musk. Bottom line
The $27 billion figure came from Forbes’ intraday estimate on June 5, 2025, when Tesla shares fell about 14% during the public Trump-Musk confrontation. Bloomberg’s end-of-day calculation put the decline closer to $34 billion. Both figures describe an estimated reduction in the market value of Musk’s holdings—not a realized $27 billion cash loss—and the difference reflects timing and methodology.
The lasting significance was the market’s response to the collapse of a politically important alliance. Tesla provided the clearest real-time link between the feud and Musk’s fortune, while the threatened exposure of government contracts and subsidies raised broader questions about political risk across Musk’s corporate empire.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Elon Musk actually lose $27 billion in cash?
No. The $27 billion figure represented an estimated decline in the market value of Musk’s holdings, especially Tesla shares. It was not a cash payment to Trump or a realized loss unless assets were later sold at lower prices.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why did Forbes say $27 billion while Bloomberg said $34 billion?
Forbes reported an intraday estimate of approximately $26.7 billion, while Bloomberg calculated an approximately $34 billion decline by the end of the trading day. The figures used different measurement times and methodologies.
Why did the Trump-Musk dispute affect Tesla so much?
Tesla was the clearest publicly traded asset affected. Tesla shares fell about 14% during the dispute, and Musk owned approximately 20.5% of Tesla according to the company’s 2024 proxy statement. Private companies such as SpaceX are valued less transparently in daily wealth estimates.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Forbes’ $26.7 billion figure was an intraday estimate; Bloomberg later put the end-of-day decline at about $34 billion. The loss was mainly a mark-to-market fall in the value of Musk’s Tesla holdings after the Trump-Musk feud intensified, not a $27 billion cash payment or necessarily a permanent loss.
