If Google Maps is wrong, frozen, or repeatedly showing “GPS Signal Lost” in Android Auto, first determine whether the phone itself has lost its location fix or whether navigation fails only after Android Auto connects. Those are different problems.
If Google Maps is wrong, frozen, or repeatedly showing “GPS Signal Lost” in Android Auto, first determine whether the phone itself has lost its location fix or whether navigation fails only after Android Auto connects. Those are different problems.
The most reliable fix path is layered: verify Google Maps’ location permission, enable Android’s Location Accuracy, test outdoors with a clear view of the sky, temporarily remove battery restrictions, separate wired from wireless Android Auto problems, update Android Auto and Google Play services, and then escalate to the phone or vehicle manufacturer if the failure remains reproducible.
First, identify what is actually failing
Use the symptom to choose the right branch:
| What you observe | Most likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| Google Maps is inaccurate or frozen on both the phone and the car display | Phone location permission, Location Accuracy, signal blockage, battery restrictions, software, or GPS hardware |
| Maps works accurately on the phone but fails only in Android Auto | Android Auto connection, pairing, vehicle compatibility, infotainment firmware, or an Android Auto software issue |
| The problem occurs only with a wired connection | USB port, USB cable, phone connector, or wired Android Auto compatibility |
| The problem occurs only wirelessly | Bluetooth/Wi-Fi pairing, wireless Android Auto compatibility, or the wireless connection itself |
| You see “GPS Signal Lost,” but Android Auto also disconnects or fails to launch | Investigate the connection problem separately from GPS reception |
| Maps stays accurate but routes stop loading or traffic disappears | Mobile-data or internet connectivity, rather than GPS reception |
Android Auto does not make the car’s display an independent cure for a phone that cannot determine its position. The navigation experience depends on the phone’s location services, Google Maps, Google Play services, the Android Auto connection, and—depending on the vehicle and setup—the vehicle’s compatibility and infotainment system.

1. Check Google Maps’ location permission
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Open Location and confirm that device Location is on.
- Open Apps or App info, select Google Maps, then choose Permissions.
- Open Location and allow location access. Choose the option that permits location while the app is being used, or the broader option available on your phone if required for your setup.
- Turn on Use precise location when that switch is available.
Menu names vary by Android version and phone manufacturer, but searching Settings for Maps permissions or location permission usually finds the relevant screen. Without location permission, Maps cannot provide reliable real-time positioning or turn-by-turn navigation.
Precise location is not the same as Location Accuracy
On Android 12 and newer, two separate controls can affect the result:
- Precise location is an app permission. It determines whether Google Maps may access a more exact position.
- Location Accuracy is an Android device setting. It determines whether Android can combine GPS with Wi-Fi, cellular networks, and device sensors to estimate the phone’s position.
Allowing precise location in Maps does not automatically enable the separate system-wide Location Accuracy setting.
2. Turn on Android Location Accuracy and scanning
On many recent Android phones, the path is:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Location.
- Open Location Services.
- Choose Location Accuracy.
- Turn on Improve Location Accuracy.
Also check the Location Services screen for Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning. Enabling these allows Android to use nearby signals as additional clues when estimating position. This can help when satellite signals are weakened by buildings or other obstructions, but it cannot guarantee a fix.

GPS is usually the most important source outdoors. Wi-Fi, cellular networks, and sensors can help Android estimate a position when satellite reception is poor, especially near large buildings or indoors.
3. Perform a proper outdoor GPS test
A test inside a garage, beneath a roof, in a tunnel, or between tall buildings cannot reliably tell you whether the phone’s GPS hardware is faulty. Some vehicle window films containing metallic material can also weaken GPS signals.

Run this comparison while safely parked:
- Disconnect the phone from Android Auto.
- Take the phone outdoors or park somewhere with a broad, unobstructed view of the sky.
- Make sure the phone has adequate battery charge and that Location is enabled.
- Open Google Maps and wait for the blue location dot to settle.
- Start navigation to a nearby destination and watch whether the position follows you accurately.
- Reconnect Android Auto and compare Maps on the car display with the phone’s behavior.
If Maps cannot obtain a stable position outdoors under favorable conditions, the car screen is unlikely to be the only problem. After completing the permission, accuracy, battery, and software checks below, contact the phone manufacturer because the phone or its GPS unit may require diagnosis or repair.
If Maps works outdoors on the phone but fails immediately after Android Auto starts, concentrate on the connection and vehicle-specific steps rather than buying a GPS accessory.

Low battery and battery-saving behavior can restrict location updates, particularly when the screen is off or Maps is running in the background for Android Auto.
For a diagnostic test:
- Charge the phone above a critically low level.
- Turn off Battery Saver or Power Saving temporarily.
- Search Settings for battery optimization, battery usage, or background usage.
- Check whether Google Maps is subject to an unusually restrictive background setting.
- Repeat the outdoor phone test, then test Android Auto again.
Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, Motorola, Xiaomi, and other manufacturers use different labels and place these controls in different menus. Do not assume a path from one brand applies to every Android phone.
This is a troubleshooting test, not a recommendation to disable every battery protection permanently. If removing the restriction fixes the problem, restore sensible battery protections and adjust only the Maps setting that is suppressing necessary background location updates.
5. Troubleshoot wired Android Auto separately
If the problem occurs only over USB, check the physical connection before treating it as a GPS failure:

- Use the vehicle’s USB port that supports Android Auto. Some ports provide charging only.
- Unplug and reconnect the phone securely.
- Inspect the phone’s USB-C port for lint, damage, or a loose fit. Do not insert metal objects into the port.
- Test a known-good, data-capable USB cable.
- Try another compatible USB port if the vehicle has one.
- Notice whether Android Auto fails to launch, disconnects repeatedly, or changes to charge-only mode.
A relevant replacement is a USB-C cable for Android Auto, provided your phone and vehicle use USB-C and the cable supports data—not just charging. Check the connector type, cable length, data capability, and vehicle compatibility before buying.
A cable swap is a reasonable diagnostic step for launch failures, repeated USB disconnects, or charge-only behavior. It cannot repair a phone’s GPS receiver, correct a denied Maps permission, restore satellite reception blocked by the environment, or fix a wireless Android Auto problem.
6. Troubleshoot wireless Android Auto separately
Wireless Android Auto requires compatible hardware in both the phone and vehicle. For initial setup and pairing, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on, then pair the phone with the vehicle according to the vehicle’s instructions.
If wireless Android Auto is the only failing mode:
- Confirm that the phone and vehicle support wireless Android Auto; wired support does not automatically mean wireless support.
- Restart the phone and the infotainment system.
- Remove the vehicle from the phone’s Bluetooth paired-device list and remove the phone from the vehicle’s saved devices, then pair them again.
- Check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth remain enabled during the connection attempt.
- Test wired Android Auto, if supported. If wired navigation works but wireless does not, the GPS receiver is less likely to be the root cause.
Do not interpret a wireless pairing failure, Android Auto launch failure, or repeated disconnect as proof that Google Maps has lost GPS. Confirm Maps’ location on the phone first.
7. Update Android Auto, Google Play services, and the vehicle
Install available updates before performing more disruptive resets:
- Open Google Play and check for updates to Google Play services.
- Check for an Android Auto update if your phone presents one.
- Install available Android system updates.
- Check the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions for infotainment firmware updates.
Android Auto is built into compatible phones as the technology that connects the phone to the car display, so it may not appear as an ordinary app that you separately install from Google Play. Google Play services is a separate system component from the Play Store and supports connections to Google services, including Maps-related functions.

After updating, restart the phone and vehicle system, then repeat the same test under the same conditions. A reproducible comparison—phone alone, wired Android Auto, and wireless Android Auto—provides more useful information than changing several variables at once.
8. Clear cache only after the basic checks
If Maps or Android Auto began misbehaving after an update, clearing an individual app’s temporary cache can be a reasonable later step:
- Open Settings and go to Apps.
- Select Google Maps or Android Auto if it is listed separately.
- Choose Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache, then restart the phone and test again.
The exact labels vary. Clearing cache removes temporary data. Clearing storage or data is much more disruptive: it can reset app state, remove saved information, and require sign-in or other setup again.
Do not begin by clearing Google Play services storage. That can remove saved information, including some Google Pay data, and may require account or payment-method reauthentication. Use it only when a more specific support procedure calls for it and you understand the consequences.
A factory reset is a last-resort phone procedure, not a normal first-line fix for an Android Auto GPS problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Capture a bug report if the problem persists
If the problem is repeatable and appears to involve Android Auto rather than general GPS reception, update Android Auto and Google Play services first. Then capture an Android Auto bug report soon after the failure. Timing matters: logs collected immediately after the incident are more useful than a report created much later.

Before contacting support, record:
- Phone make and model
- Android version
- Google Maps version
- Google Play services version
- Android Auto version, if shown
- Vehicle make, model, and model year
- Whether the connection is wired or wireless
- Whether the phone works correctly outside Android Auto
- Whether the failure occurs outdoors with a clear sky
- The exact message, such as “GPS Signal Lost,” and whether Android Auto disconnects at the same time
These details help support distinguish a general phone GPS problem from a phone-to-vehicle integration problem.
When to contact the phone maker or vehicle manufacturer
Contact the phone manufacturer when:
- Google Maps cannot acquire GPS outdoors with a clear sky.
- The blue dot is inaccurate on the phone itself, not just on the car display.
- Permission, Location Accuracy, battery, and software checks do not help.
- Other location-based apps also lose the phone’s position.
- The phone has suffered a drop, liquid exposure, port damage, or other hardware event.
At that point, ask the manufacturer or an authorized repair network about a GPS hardware diagnostic rather than assuming a new cable or generic cleaning utility will help.
Contact the vehicle manufacturer or dealer when:
- Google Maps navigates correctly on the phone outdoors but fails only through Android Auto.
- The issue is limited to one vehicle, USB port, infotainment firmware version, or wireless pairing profile.
- Another compatible phone works normally in the same vehicle, or your phone works normally in another vehicle.
- Android Auto will not launch, disconnects repeatedly, or fails to maintain the connection despite a known-good cable or a correctly configured wireless pairing.
Provide the vehicle model year, infotainment version, connection mode, and bug report details. Compatibility and firmware issues often require vehicle-specific support.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Assuming the car screen has a separate GPS fix: Android Auto navigation still depends heavily on the phone and its location services.
- Changing only one location control: precise Maps permission and Android Location Accuracy are separate settings.
- Testing only in a garage or urban canyon: blocked satellite signals can mimic hardware failure.
- Buying a charging-only cable: wired Android Auto needs a data-capable connection.
- Expecting a cable to fix GPS accuracy: cables address wired connection symptoms, not location reception or permissions.
- Clearing Google Play services data immediately: this can remove stored information and trigger reauthentication.
- Disabling all battery protections permanently: use battery changes to identify the cause, then apply the narrowest practical adjustment.
- Changing many settings at once: test phone-only, wired, and wireless behavior separately so you know which change mattered.
Fast decision checklist
- Does Maps fail on the phone too? If yes, check permissions, Location Accuracy, outdoor reception, battery restrictions, and phone software.
- Does Maps work outdoors on the phone? If no, repeat the test in an unobstructed location and consider phone support.
- Does it fail only in Android Auto? If yes, investigate pairing, USB, wireless compatibility, infotainment firmware, and Android Auto updates.
- Is it wired-only? Test the correct USB port and a known-good data cable.
- Is it wireless-only? Verify wireless support, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi/Location settings, and redo pairing.
- Does the failure remain reproducible? Capture a bug report immediately after it happens and escalate with the recorded details.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “GPS Signal Lost” mean in Android Auto?
“GPS Signal Lost” means Google Maps is not receiving a reliable current position. It may be caused by blocked satellite reception, denied permission, Location Accuracy settings, battery restrictions, or a phone GPS fault. If Android Auto is also disconnecting, troubleshoot that connection separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan a new USB-C cable fix Android Auto GPS problems?
Yes, but only when the cable is involved in the symptom. Use a compatible, data-capable cable and the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port. A cable cannot fix inaccurate GPS caused by permissions, signal blockage, software, or defective phone hardware.
When should I contact the phone or vehicle manufacturer?
Test Google Maps outdoors with a clear view of the sky while disconnected from Android Auto. If the phone cannot obtain a stable location there, contact the phone manufacturer after checking permissions, Location Accuracy, battery restrictions, and updates. If the phone works correctly alone but fails in one vehicle, contact the vehicle manufacturer or dealer.
The Bottom Line
Start with the phone, not the dashboard: confirm Google Maps has precise location permission, enable Android Location Accuracy, and test outdoors with a clear sky. Then determine whether the fault appears only when Android Auto connects, and test wired and wireless modes independently. A compatible USB-C data cable is useful only for wired connection symptoms. Persistent outdoor GPS failure points toward the phone; a failure limited to one vehicle or connection mode points toward Android Auto, the cable, pairing, or the vehicle infotainment system.
