Battery temperature, cab heating, payload, body or trailer, speed, terrain, traffic, wind, precipitation and charging access all change the result. A safe winter plan starts with the exact truck configuration and usable battery energy, models the actual route and forecast, confirms compatible charging, and sets a reserve from your fleet’s own trip data—not from a generic passenger-car rule or the maximum range in a brochure.
How much range do electric trucks lose in cold weather?
No truck-specific source establishes one universal figure such as “20% less range below freezing.” Volvo Trucks says cold temperatures increase energy consumption and shorten range, but its Minnesota-and-Texas extreme-weather field project did not publish final truck-by-truck winter results. Passenger-car winter statistics should not be transferred to Class 8 tractors or vocational trucks.

Winter range is an outcome of a particular vehicle, load, route and operating day. The same truck can use substantially different energy on a flat, dry, lightly loaded run at moderate speed than on a heavy, windy route with wet pavement, hills, congestion and a powered body. Treat a manufacturer’s maximum range as a conditional estimate, not as the distance you can promise in severe weather.
What cold weather changes on an electric truck
Battery temperature and chemistry
Volvo explains that heavy-duty battery-electric trucks can lose range in extreme temperatures because chemical and physical reactions inside the battery occur more slowly. The truck must spend energy managing battery temperature, and a colder battery may deliver less usable energy or accept power differently until it reaches an appropriate operating temperature.

The VNR Electric uses a dedicated Battery Thermal Management System to regulate battery temperature. That system helps keep the battery within its operating window; it does not make cold-weather energy consumption disappear. The temperature effect varies with the truck, battery configuration, starting conditions and duty cycle.
Cab heating and auxiliary loads
Heating the cab uses battery energy. Defrosting, windshield clearing, lighting, refrigeration, liftgates, pumps and other electrically powered equipment can add further demand. A truck carrying or powering a high-energy body therefore may have a different winter result from a tractor pulling a dry van, even when both have similar advertised range.
Road and weather resistance
Volvo identifies rain, cold temperatures and strong headwinds as conditions that raise energy consumption and shorten range, just as they increase fuel use in a diesel vehicle. Wet or slushy roads increase rolling resistance. Snow, ice and standing water can force slower traffic, repeated acceleration or detours. Wind affects the aerodynamic load, especially on a high-sided trailer.
Weight, terrain, traffic and driving behavior
Payload, gross combination weight, bodywork, topography, speed, traffic and driver behavior all matter. Climbing consumes energy; regenerative braking can recover some energy on descents but cannot erase the energy used to climb. Stop-and-go traffic, high cruising speeds and rapid acceleration generally increase consumption. Route planning must include the actual load and trailer or body rather than a nominal vehicle rating.
Published range figures—and the conditions behind them
The figures below are useful for identifying configurations and planning assumptions. None is a universal cold-weather promise.
| Truck or source | Published figure | Conditions and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Volvo VNR Electric, six-battery configuration | Up to 275 miles; 565 kWh total and 452 kWh usable | Volvo Trucks USA product-page figures accessed October 11, 2026. The page’s footnote gives 220 miles as the typical range for the up-to-275-mile configuration. These are model-specific figures, not cold-weather values. |
| Tesla Semi, standard and long-range versions | 325 miles standard range; 500 miles long range | Tesla estimates assume 82,000 lb gross combination weight, 55 mph, 20°C, flat ground, a tandem-axle aerodynamic kit and a CARB-compliant dry-van trailer. Tesla’s separate energy-consumption estimate uses a different trailer-axle assumption, so the figures should not be mixed. |
| Volvo broad example (2021 explainer) | Approximately 300 km for a 4×2 tractor at an average weight of 30 tonnes | An older illustrative example, not a current model specification. Volvo notes that specification and application can make the range considerably longer or shorter. |
Those assumptions explain why two apparently similar range claims cannot be compared without aligning weight, speed, trailer, weather and route. A 500-mile estimate at 20°C on flat ground is not a winter route guarantee, and a 275-mile maximum is not the same as the 220-mile typical figure identified in the VNR footnote.

What the Volvo extreme-weather project actually showed
In a June 2023 release, Volvo Trucks USA described field testing with the University of Minnesota and local fleets operating Volvo VNR Electric trucks in Minnesota and Texas. The work examined variables such as temperature and operating conditions; the release said final findings would be published later.
Volvo also reported that a machine-learning energy-management tool had helped the participating Murphy Logistics Solutions and H-E-B fleets achieve more than a 20% increase in range. That is a reported result for those fleets and tool use—not a measured winter-loss percentage, not a guaranteed improvement for every operator, and not a truck-by-truck cold-weather result. Keep the qualification attached whenever you cite the number.
How to plan an electric-truck route in winter
Use this workflow for every route that could approach the truck’s practical limit. It is more reliable than subtracting an assumed percentage from an advertised maximum.
1. Identify the exact vehicle and usable energy
- Record the truck model and model year, axle and tractor configuration, battery count or pack size, and the manufacturer’s usable-energy figure.
- Record the planned gross combination weight, payload, trailer or vocational body, tire setup and any equipment that draws electrical power.
- Use the range and charging characteristics for that exact configuration. Do not substitute a different battery option or a tractor-only figure for a loaded combination.
2. Model the real route and forecast
Enter the route, departure time, expected temperature, wind, precipitation, terrain, traffic, speed, payload and body or trailer assumptions into a truck-specific planning system. Volvo says its Electric Performance Generator models vehicle and battery configuration, terrain, ambient temperature, traffic patterns and estimated opportunity-charging needs.
Use the forecast for the route window, not a daily average from a distant weather station. If the trip crosses climate zones or elevations, model the segments separately when the tool permits it. Include likely detours, queueing and idling time at customer sites.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Check whether the route needs an opportunity charge
If the modeled state of charge approaches your operating reserve before the destination, add a charging stop or redesign the route. The stop must be usable by the complete vehicle, not merely visible on a map: verify truck access, turning radius, operating hours, payment or authorization, connector, power level and any site restrictions.

Charging systems are not automatically interchangeable. The VNR Electric specifies CCS1 charging and configuration-specific charge times with a 250 kW charger. Tesla describes Semi-specific Megacharger and Basecharger equipment. Confirm the connector and charging equipment for the actual truck before dispatch.
4. Set a reserve from operating evidence
Official material reviewed for these trucks does not prescribe one universal winter reserve percentage. Establish a policy using your own trips, with separate records for temperature bands, payload ranges, route types and driver teams. A reserve should cover forecast error, a blocked charger, congestion, a detour and the energy needed to reach a safe charging location.
Do not define reserve solely as a percentage of the battery. A fixed percentage can represent very different miles on a light flat route versus a heavy, hilly route in a headwind. Express the policy in both state of charge and a route-specific minimum arrival margin when your planning system supports it.

- Verify the battery is at the planned departure state of charge and that preconditioning or thermal-management procedures are complete when supported.
- Check current weather, road closures, charger status and any site access restrictions.
- Give the driver the planned charging stop, acceptable state-of-charge window and the contingency location if the first charger is unavailable.
- Make sure the load, trailer and route used in the model match the dispatch record.
6. Capture the trip and refine the model
Log departure and arrival state of charge, energy used, distance, payload, temperature, wind, precipitation, speed, traffic, charging time and auxiliary loads. Volvo’s connected fleet tools are described as providing state-of-charge notifications, charging-status monitoring and energy-consumption reports. Compare actual use with the modeled route and adjust future assumptions by season and duty cycle.
Charging compatibility and winter stop planning
Connector and power are separate questions
A compatible connector does not guarantee the truck can accept a station’s full rated power. Confirm the vehicle’s maximum charging rate, the station’s delivered power, cable reach and whether the site can serve a tractor-trailer without uncoupling. Charging time also depends on battery state of charge, temperature and the truck’s configuration.
For the VNR Electric, Volvo publishes configuration-specific charge times when using a 250 kW charger and identifies CCS1 charging. Tesla’s Semi materials describe a separate Megacharger and Basecharger ecosystem. These examples illustrate why a route plan must name the actual charging system rather than use “fast charger” as if it were a universal standard.

Allow for a cold-soaked stop
A truck parked outdoors for hours may arrive with a colder battery than the one assumed by a warm-weather charging schedule. If the vehicle or fleet system provides battery preconditioning, schedule it with enough plugged-in time and power availability. Do not promise a fixed charging duration unless it is tied to the truck configuration, charger and starting state of charge.
Plan the approach and departure
Choose a charger before the battery reaches an emergency level. Winter queues, snow-clearing, blocked stalls or a failed dispenser can turn a nominally adequate stop into a route failure. Keep the contingency site within the reserve policy and confirm that its access works for the truck’s length and turning path.
How to compare electric trucks or winter routes fairly
Put every candidate on the same operating basis. A comparison that mixes laboratory-style maximums with fleet-typical values can produce a misleading winner.
| Comparison axis | Questions to align |
|---|---|
| Vehicle and battery | What exact model, axle configuration, battery count and usable kWh are being compared? |
| Mass and aerodynamics | Are gross combination weight, payload, trailer or body, axle arrangement and aerodynamic equipment equivalent? |
| Route and speed | Is the distance the same, and are cruising speed, stops, hills, traffic and road surface represented consistently? |
| Weather | Do both estimates use the same temperature, wind, precipitation and road conditions? |
| Charging | Are connector, charger power, access, charging curve, dwell time and backup locations comparable? |
| Evidence type | Is the number a maximum estimate, a typical figure, an older illustration, a controlled test or observed fleet data? |
Volvo and Tesla publish different products, configurations and charging systems. Their figures should not be ranked without matching the conditions above.

- Precondition while connected when the truck supports it. Heating the battery and cab from grid power can reduce the energy taken from the pack after departure.
- Use a steady speed. Avoid unnecessary high-speed travel and harsh acceleration, especially when the route model assumes a lower speed.
- Reduce idle and accessory demand. Use efficient climate settings and switch off equipment that is not required, while maintaining driver safety and legal requirements.
- Keep tires and alignment in specification. Underinflation and poor alignment increase rolling resistance; inspect them before a cold-weather run.
- Load consistently. A route model is only useful when the dispatched payload, trailer and body match its assumptions.
- Watch live state of charge and consumption. A rising kWh-per-mile figure is an early warning to reduce speed, reassess the next stop or use the contingency plan.
These practices improve predictability; they do not create a guaranteed percentage improvement. Measure their effect in the fleet’s own data.

Subtracting a generic winter percentage
Why it fails: The percentage may come from a passenger car, a different battery, a different route or a controlled test. Fix: Model the exact truck and weather, then set reserve from observed trips.

Using maximum range as a dispatch distance
Why it fails: Maximum figures carry conditions such as speed, weight, temperature, terrain and trailer aerodynamics. Fix: Use the configuration’s typical or modeled result and include a reachable charging option.
Planning from total battery kWh instead of usable energy
Why it fails: The pack’s total capacity is not the energy available for a route. The VNR Electric example lists 565 kWh total and 452 kWh usable. Fix: Use the manufacturer’s usable figure in the route model.
Assuming every high-power charger fits every truck
Why it fails: Connector standards, vehicle limits, site layout and charging equipment differ. Fix: Confirm connector, power, access and truck-specific charge time for each stop.

Ignoring the body or trailer
Why it fails: Refrigeration, liftgates, pumps and other equipment can consume energy, while trailer shape changes aerodynamic drag. Fix: Enter the actual body, trailer and auxiliary loads.
Failing to learn from completed routes
Why it fails: A model built from generic assumptions may miss a local hill, wind corridor, queue or driver pattern. Fix: Record state of charge and energy consumption for every winter trip and update assumptions by route and temperature.
What fleet managers should record
A useful winter dataset links energy use to the conditions that caused it. At minimum, retain:
- Truck identification, battery configuration and usable capacity.
- Payload, gross combination weight, trailer or body and auxiliary equipment.
- Departure and arrival state of charge, charging energy and charging duration.
- Distance, average and maximum speed, stops, idling and traffic delays.
- Temperature, wind, precipitation, road surface and elevation or grade.
- Cab-heating settings and unusual loads such as refrigeration or hydraulics.
- Planned versus actual route and any charger access or reliability issue.
After enough trips, separate the results into comparable groups—for example, loaded versus empty, flat versus hilly, and mild versus sub-freezing. That evidence can produce a route-specific reserve that is more defensible than a blanket rule.

Questions to ask before approving a winter route
- Is the route modeled for the exact truck, battery, payload and body or trailer?
- Does the model include the expected temperature, wind, precipitation, terrain, traffic and speed?
- Is the arrival state of charge above the fleet’s evidence-based reserve?
- Does every charging stop accept the truck’s connector and provide usable power?
- Can the complete vehicle enter, maneuver at and leave the charging site?
- Is there a reachable backup if the planned charger is occupied, offline or inaccessible?
- Will the driver and dispatcher monitor live state of charge and energy consumption?
- Will the trip data be captured for the next winter plan?
The practical takeaway
Electric-truck range in cold weather is not a fixed deduction from a headline number. It is the combined result of battery temperature, heating and auxiliary loads, mass, aerodynamics, speed, terrain, traffic, wind, precipitation and charging choices. Plan with the exact configuration and usable energy, run a truck-specific model with winter assumptions, confirm compatible charging and preserve a reserve supported by your fleet’s own data. That approach turns an uncertain seasonal effect into a measurable operating policy.
