Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If you can’t find a usable EV charger nearby, search the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) station locator for compatible stations near you or along your route, then verify the station’s current status with its operator before driving there. A map listing does not guarantee that a charger is available, working, accessible, or compatible with your vehicle.
When your battery is low, make the decision in this order: find a reachable option, confirm your car can use it, and check that it is open and operating now. If you cannot identify a safe, usable destination within your remaining range, contact the charging operator or your vehicle’s roadside-assistance provider rather than relying on an unverified map result.

Start with a reachable, compatible charger
- Search the official locator. Use the DOE AFDC station locator to look near your current location or along a route. The locator brings together networked and non-networked station information; those sources may be updated on different schedules, so treat its results as leads rather than live availability guarantees. Search along the route as well as at your destination, especially if the closest map pin does not appear reachable or usable.
- Check compatibility before choosing a destination. Confirm that the station has a connector your vehicle can use and offers a charging level your vehicle supports. A listing does not establish that a particular port will fit your car or that your vehicle can use DC fast charging. Check the vehicle manual or manufacturer guidance if you are unsure. Do not assume an adapter will make an otherwise incompatible station usable; connector and vehicle details matter.
- Confirm the station is usable now. Check the charging operator’s app or website for port status, access details, hours, and payment requirements. If the information is unclear, contact the operator through its support channel before setting out. A port can be unavailable even when the station appears on a map. If status information has no clear update time, treat it cautiously and ask the operator whether the specific port is working.
- Compare the trip with the range you have. Choose an option that is safely within your remaining range, allowing for the actual route and conditions. Do not drive farther on the assumption that a listed charger will work; if you are close to running out of charge, contact the operator or your vehicle’s roadside-assistance provider rather than gambling on a distant station.
If you are deciding between two candidates, first rule out stations your vehicle cannot use or that you cannot reach. Then compare their reported status, hours, access, payment requirements, and charging level. The closest station is not automatically the best option if it is behind a gate, closed, or showing an unavailable port.

The nearest pin on the map is not always the best choice. Compare the practical details that determine whether you can reach, access, and use a charger:

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Connector and vehicle capability | The vehicle must be able to connect to the port and accept that charging level. Verify with the station operator and vehicle guidance when compatibility is uncertain. |
| Distance and remaining range | Pick a station you can reach with a margin, not merely one that looks close on a map. A longer route or a change in conditions can affect whether the trip is feasible. |
| Charging level and time available | A slower Level 2 stop can suit a longer parking stay; DC fast charging is intended for quicker top-ups, if the car supports it and the station is functioning. |
| Reported status and when it was checked | AFDC combines data sources with different update cadences. Check current port status directly with the operator before driving. |
| Access, hours, payment, and support | A charger may be behind a gate, unavailable outside business hours, or require a particular payment method. Confirm access and know how to reach operator support. |
These checks also help you avoid confusing “listed” with “ready to use.” A station may appear in a locator while a particular port is occupied, out of service, or inaccessible to you at that time. Networked and non-networked station data do not necessarily refresh on the same schedule, so a listing is useful for finding possibilities—not a guarantee of a successful charging session.
Look beyond highway fast chargers
If your range allows, broaden the search to places where you can park for longer. DOE guidance identifies public, workplace, destination, and home charging as parts of the charging landscape. A workplace charger, parking garage, grocery-store destination charger, or other public site may be useful when you have time to stay. These options are not interchangeable: check access rules, hours, connector, charging level, and current status before you rely on one.
A destination charger can make sense if you are already planning to spend time there, but it may not deliver the quick top-up you want. A workplace or garage charger may also be limited to employees, customers, tenants, or people with permission to park. Verify access before making it your plan. If you are comparing a slower charger with a farther fast charger, consider not just distance but whether you can safely reach the fast charger and how long you can remain parked at the slower one.
Choose charging speed to fit the stop
Level 2 may work well when you are already parked for an extended visit, while DC fast charging is designed for a shorter stop. EPA’s consumer overview gives broad estimates of about 5 miles of range per hour for Level 1, about 25 miles per hour for Level 2, and about 100–200+ miles per 30 minutes for DC fast charging. These are estimates, not promised results: actual charging varies with station power, vehicle capability, and battery state of charge. A vehicle that cannot accept DC fast charging cannot use that option just because a station is nearby.
Think of those figures as a general comparison rather than a prediction for your car. The speed of the station is only one part of the result; the vehicle’s charging capability and its battery state also matter. A Level 2 station can be useful when the plan includes a longer stay, but it may not be an adequate answer if you need a quick charge to continue. Likewise, a fast charger is not a solution if the car cannot use it, the port is unavailable, or the station is beyond your remaining range.
If the charger you reach is broken or won’t start
Charging problems can arise while locating a station, gaining access, starting a session, or completing it. If a port is broken, occupied, or refuses to start, do not assume repeated attempts will fix it or that another port is available.

- Check the operator’s app or display for the port’s status and any instructions. If the app and station disagree, contact operator support.
- Follow the operator’s troubleshooting guidance and confirm any access or payment step the station requires.
- If the charger remains unusable, reassess other compatible stations against your remaining range, using the same status check before driving.
- If the vehicle cannot safely reach a functioning charger, contact the vehicle’s roadside-assistance provider for vehicle- and location-specific help.
NREL’s 2024 analysis groups charging pain points across the charging experience, and its January 2025 account of ChargeX work describes certain failures when sessions start. That supports taking a failed start seriously, but does not mean every failure has the same cause or a universal fix. A support representative can advise you about that operator’s station; the vehicle’s roadside-assistance provider is the more relevant contact if the car itself cannot reach another functioning charger.

Before leaving a failed station, check whether another port is reported available and whether it has a connector your vehicle can use. Do not assume that a second port, another station at the same address, or a nearby map result will work without checking its status and access. If you cannot establish a reachable alternative, ask for situation-specific help instead of continuing on an uncertain route.
If no reachable charger is available
Contact the charging operator if you need help with a specific station; contact your vehicle’s roadside-assistance provider if the car cannot reach a working charger. Explain your location, remaining range, vehicle model, and the station or route problem. Ask what help is available for your situation rather than assuming that mobile charging, towing to a charger, or another particular service is included. Coverage and available assistance depend on your vehicle, provider, location, and terms.
Universal roadside coverage or a guaranteed mobile charging service is not established. Check your vehicle manual and roadside-assistance terms to understand what your provider offers; options can differ by vehicle and location. If you call, having your vehicle model, current location, remaining range, and the problem you encountered ready can help the provider give relevant guidance.
There is no universal emergency adapter established for every EV and station combination. Do not buy or try a generic adapter as a substitute for checking connector and vehicle compatibility. Use the vehicle manual and the charging or roadside provider’s guidance for the exact car and station.
Can you use a regular outlet?
Level 1 charging uses a standard 120-volt outlet, and EPA notes that a charging cord often comes with the vehicle. It is a slow charging option—not a quick roadside rescue for a critically low battery. It is only practical when the vehicle is compatible, a suitable outlet is available, and you have permission to use it. Follow the vehicle and equipment instructions, and do not improvise with an outlet or cord that is not suitable for EV charging.

EPA’s broad estimate for Level 1 is about 5 miles of range per hour, though the result varies. That can be useful when there is time to leave the car connected, but it is very different from a rapid public charging stop. A standard outlet is not automatically available just because a building has electricity: you need access to a suitable outlet and permission to use it. A portable Level 1 EVSE is a preparedness option only if it is compatible with the vehicle and can be used safely in the circumstances.
Prepare for home charging safely
If you are considering a portable Level 1 EVSE as a backup or planning home charging, treat it as preparedness rather than a way to replace a public fast charge. For a home charger or new circuit, EPA recommends choosing a safety-certified charger and having an electrician evaluate the circuit and electrical-panel capacity. Installation requirements and local electrical rules can vary.
Do not assume that every home outlet or electrical circuit is suitable for the charging setup you have in mind. EPA’s guidance is to use a safety-certified charger and get a professional evaluation of circuit and panel capacity when planning home installation. A portable cord may already be included with many vehicles, so check the equipment supplied with your car and its instructions before purchasing another one.
What the national charging picture can—and can’t—tell you
DOE says about 80 percent of EV charging happens at home, a national context figure on its page dated November 8, 2024—not a guarantee that a particular driver has access to home charging. NREL reported that the public network offered more than 205,000 places to charge across the nation as of January 15, 2025. That dated national count describes scale, not whether a compatible, functioning port is reachable in your current situation.
For trip planning, the useful question is not simply whether chargers exist nearby; it is whether a compatible station is reachable, open, accessible, and currently working. The AFDC locator helps identify candidates, while the operator can provide the best available station-specific status. The national network’s size does not remove the need to check the connector, the port, and the route for the particular trip you are making.

How do I find a working EV charger near me?
Use the AFDC locator to identify possible stations, but do not treat a map listing as live confirmation. Check the operator’s app or website for the port’s current status and contact support if the information is unclear or conflicts with what you see. Networked and non-networked data can be updated on different schedules.
What if the EV charger is broken or won’t start?
Check the station display and operator app for instructions, then contact operator support if the problem remains or the information is inconsistent. Recheck other reachable, compatible options before driving to one. If the vehicle cannot reach a functioning charger, call its roadside-assistance provider for guidance specific to your vehicle and location.
Can I charge my EV from a regular outlet?
Level 1 charging uses a standard 120-volt outlet, and many vehicles include a charging cord. You still need a suitable outlet, permission to use it, compatible equipment, and time: EPA’s broad estimate is about 5 miles of range per hour. It is slow and is not a quick substitute for a public fast charger.
What should I do if my EV battery is too low to reach a charger?
Do not rely on a distant station merely because it appears on a map. Contact the charging operator about a specific station if needed, and contact your vehicle’s roadside-assistance provider if the car cannot safely reach a working charger. Ask what help is actually available under your provider’s terms; roadside coverage and services vary.
