These practices reduce avoidable stress and safety risks, but there is no universal percentage or schedule for every electric scooter. Your model’s manual takes priority over general advice.

Why charging habits matter
An electric scooter can continue using a small amount of battery power even when switched off. Leaving it empty for a long period can therefore lead to over-discharge. Xiaomi warns that over-discharge can cause irreversible damage on the models covered by its battery-maintenance FAQs. Avoiding a repeatedly flat battery, controlling storage conditions and using the correct charger are more important than following a made-up universal percentage.

Manufacturers do not publish identical instructions. One manual may say to fully charge after each ride, while another says to charge frequently or whenever needed. Treat the instructions for your exact model, region and edition as the controlling advice.

How should I charge an electric scooter battery?
Use a top-up routine rather than deliberate deep discharges
For everyday riding, charge when convenient and try not to leave the battery completely drained. Xiaomi support guidance for several scooter lines recommends charging frequently or as needed and avoiding full depletion. Some Xiaomi product manuals also instruct owners to fully charge after use. Those statements can coexist because the correct routine depends on the model; they do not establish one rule for every scooter.
A practical approach is to plug in after a ride when the manual calls for a full charge, or top up before the next trip when the manual allows charging as needed. Do not intentionally ride until the scooter shuts down simply to “reset” the battery. No reliable, model-independent battery-life extension figure is established for doing so.
Everyday charging steps
- Inspect the scooter and charger. Check for visible damage, moisture, bent contacts or a loose cable. If anything appears damaged, stop and contact the scooter manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
- Confirm the temperature range. Read the operating and charging limits in the manual before connecting power. A scooter brought in from cold storage may need to warm up first; see the temperature section below.
- Place it in a safe, dry location. Keep the charger and scooter where they will not be covered, knocked over or exposed to water. Follow the clearances and ventilation instructions supplied with the scooter.
- Connect the approved charger. Use the charger supplied with the scooter or a replacement the manufacturer confirms for that exact model. A connector that fits is not proof of electrical compatibility.
- Remain present. Watch the charge rather than leaving the scooter unattended. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says, “Always be present when charging micromobility products.” (CPSC Micromobility Information Center)
- Finish and disconnect. When charging is complete, unplug the scooter as directed by its manual. CPSC advises unplugging when done and not charging while sleeping or away from home (CPSC, September 4, 2025).
Should I charge the scooter after every ride?
There is no single answer that applies to all scooters. Xiaomi’s Electric Scooter 4 Pro Plus guidance discusses charging after use, while other Xiaomi guidance emphasizes frequent or as-needed charging and avoiding complete depletion. Use the wording in your model’s manual: if it calls for a full charge after each use, follow that instruction; if it says to charge as needed, a top-up before the next ride is acceptable.

How to prepare an electric scooter for long-term storage
Set the storage charge specified for your model
For the Xiaomi Electric Scooter 5 Pro, Xiaomi says that storage longer than 30 days should begin at about 80% charge. It also advises a full charge every one to two months and periodic battery checks (Xiaomi Electric Scooter 5 Pro battery maintenance). This 80% target is not a universal scooter standard. Other brands and models can specify a different level or interval.
Xiaomi publishes related maintenance guidance for the Electric Scooter 4 Pro Plus series, but the exact storage target and timing should be read in that model’s documentation (Xiaomi Electric Scooter 4 Pro Plus battery type and maintenance). Segway also provides model-specific storage instructions; do not substitute the Xiaomi figure for a Segway scooter.
Use a storage checklist
- Clean and dry the scooter according to its care instructions before putting it away.
- Charge to the percentage specified in the manual. If your manual gives no storage percentage, ask the manufacturer rather than guessing.
- Store in a cool, dry place inside the stated storage-temperature range.
- Record the date and the next inspection date. Check the battery at the interval the manual gives; for the Xiaomi 5 Pro guidance above, that means a full charge every one to two months.
- Recharge before the battery becomes deeply discharged. Do not leave the scooter at zero for weeks or months.
During storage, switch the scooter off as instructed, but remember that “off” does not guarantee zero energy use. If the charge falls faster than the manual suggests, stop relying on a long-storage routine and contact the manufacturer.
Temperature: when it is safe to charge
Cold conditions
Cold temperatures can reduce range and performance. Do not connect a scooter straight from a cold garage, vehicle or shed unless the manual explicitly permits it. The Segway P100 important-information manual says not to charge a scooter stored below 0°C until it has been moved to a warm environment above 10°C (Segway P100 Important Information manual).

The P100 instruction is model-specific. It does not establish that every scooter is safe to charge at 10°C, nor does it define a universal warm-up time. Follow the temperature limits printed for your scooter.
Heat and storage limits
Xiaomi’s Electric Scooter 5 Pro FAQ warns against use above 45°C and storage above 50°C or below −20°C (Xiaomi 5 Pro battery-maintenance FAQ). Those thresholds apply to that model’s guidance, not to every electric scooter. Keep the scooter out of direct sun and hot vehicles, and check the manual for separate operating, charging and storage ranges.
Segway publishes charging-temperature information for its SuperScooter GT products, but the applicable limits vary by product. Consult the relevant product page and manual rather than transferring a number from another model (Segway SuperScooter GT product information).
Choosing a replacement charger
Why connector fit is not enough
Every micromobility battery has specific charging requirements. A universal charger can fit the socket and still be electrically incompatible. In a September 5, 2024 warning, the CPSC said it had received 156 reports of fires and thermal incidents involving “universal” micromobility chargers from January 1, 2023 through May 16, 2024. That is a count of reports received during that period, not a risk estimate for every charger or scooter (CPSC warning on universal micromobility chargers, September 5, 2024).

Do not choose a replacement based only on a matching plug, a seller’s “electric scooter charger” label, or an advertised voltage. CPSC’s guidance is to use the supplied charger or one recommended by the manufacturer. If the original is lost or damaged, contact the scooter maker with the exact model and, where applicable, the battery or charger part number. A manufacturer-approved replacement charger is the appropriate purchase path; a generic universal unit is not.
Charging safety rules from the CPSC
- Follow the scooter manufacturer’s charging instructions.
- Use the charger supplied with the product or one the manufacturer recommends.
- Stay present while charging.
- Never charge while sleeping or when away from home.
- Unplug when charging is complete.

What to do when charging or range seems abnormal
The scooter was stored empty
Do not repeatedly attempt improvised charging with another adapter. Over-discharge may be irreversible on models covered by Xiaomi’s guidance. Use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions or arrange authorized service.

Range is temporarily low in cold weather
Cold can reduce range and performance. Move the scooter into the temperature range specified by its manual before charging or riding. If performance does not return under normal conditions, contact the manufacturer.
The original charger is missing
Get the exact model and serial information, then ask the manufacturer for a compatible replacement. Do not substitute a universal charger solely because the plug fits.
The battery or charger is damaged
Stop using it and seek manufacturer or qualified, authorized battery service. CPSC guidance supports using approved replacement packs and chargers rather than unverified parts.

- Every ride: Check the remaining charge and recharge according to the model manual; avoid deliberately reaching zero.
- Every charge: Confirm the scooter is dry, within the allowed temperature range and connected to the approved charger.
- During charging: Stay present, keep the area clear and unplug when complete.
- Before storage: Set the manual’s storage charge, then record the inspection date.
- During storage: Keep the scooter within the stated temperature range and check the charge at the specified interval.
- When replacing equipment: Verify charger or battery compatibility directly with the manufacturer.
Following the model-specific manual, avoiding prolonged complete discharge, controlling temperature and using approved charging equipment are the core habits that preserve safe, dependable scooter operation. They are more reliable than a one-size-fits-all charging percentage or an unverified universal accessory.
