Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe MG Cyberster is itself an electric roadster. So the real decision is whether its two-seat, battery-electric format suits you better than a petrol convertible such as the BMW Z4 or Porsche Boxster, or than an electric alternative that may be available in your market later. Choose the single-motor Cyberster Trophy if open-air touring, usable range and a calmer character matter most. Choose the dual-motor Cyberster GT if rapid acceleration and maximum power are your priorities.
The right choice depends on more than headline speed. Check your local price and specification, access to dependable charging, boot and passenger needs, ride comfort, handling expectations, safety information, warranty coverage and dealer support before placing an order. The figures below combine MG Motor Europe’s 2025 brochure with What Car?’s UK review and should not be treated as a universal specification for every country.

What the comparison actually means
“Electric roadster versus MG Cyberster” is not a comparison between two separate vehicle types. A roadster is a lightweight, usually two-seat convertible; the Cyberster is MG’s battery-electric interpretation of that formula. Your practical choice is therefore between the Cyberster and other open-top sports cars, most of which may use petrol.
In the UK market context of What Car?’s review, there was no direct battery-electric roadster rival to line up against the Cyberster. The publication instead identified the BMW Z4 and Porsche Boxster as indirect alternatives for buyers who do not require an electric powertrain. Availability changes by country and model year, so treat that statement as a dated market snapshot rather than a permanent description of the global market.

Start by deciding what you want the car to do. A driver with home charging and a daily commute may value the quiet, instant response of an electric drivetrain. Someone who plans long, spontaneous trips or prefers delicate, lightweight handling may find a petrol roadster easier to live with. Neither preference is automatically better; the Cyberster’s strengths and compromises are different from those of a conventional sports car.
Cyberster versions and the numbers that matter
Two versions appear in the cited material: the single-motor Trophy and the dual-motor GT. The table keeps MG’s European brochure figures separate from What Car?’s UK review figures because battery-capacity definitions, test cycles and market specifications are not identical.
| Version | Motor configuration | Power in What Car?’s UK review | 0–62 mph in the review | Official UK range in the review | MG Europe WLTP range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cyberster Trophy | Single motor, rear-wheel drive | 335 bhp | 5.0 seconds | 316 miles | Up to 507 km combined |
| Cyberster GT | Dual motor | 503 bhp | 3.2 seconds | 276 miles | Up to 443 km combined |
MG’s 2025 Europe brochure gives the GT a maximum 375 kW, or 510 PS, and quotes 3.2 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. Those are manufacturer figures for the GT and use a different power convention from the bhp figure in the UK review, so they should not be read as contradictory dyno results. The brochure labels the battery as 77 kWh; What Car? describes a 74.4 kWh usable battery for both UK versions. Nominal and usable capacity are different measurements, and neither source establishes that every market receives exactly the same pack.

The Trophy’s single rear motor makes it the range-oriented choice in MG’s published data. Its lower output should still feel rapid in normal driving, while rear-wheel drive preserves a traditional sports-car layout. It is the logical starting point if you want open-top electric cruising, expect regular road trips and do not intend to use maximum acceleration at every opportunity.
What the GT is for
The GT adds a second motor and is the performance flagship. Its purpose is immediate, dramatic acceleration rather than maximum distance between charges. Select it when straight-line pace, overtaking reserve and the most powerful specification matter more than the range trade-off and likely higher energy consumption that accompany extra performance.

How to choose between the two trims
Choose Trophy when range and relaxed touring come first
- You can charge at home or at a regular destination but want fewer charging stops on long drives.
- Your typical journeys involve commuting, weekend touring and mixed-speed roads rather than repeated hard launches.
- You prefer rear-wheel-drive balance and do not need the GT’s additional motor.
- You want the lower-complexity version of the Cyberster range, subject to your country’s equipment list.
Choose GT when acceleration is central to the purchase
- You consider the car’s defining feature to be instant, forceful performance.
- You are prepared to accept the shorter official range shown in the UK review.
- You have reliable charging available at home, work or along your regular routes.
- You want the highest-output Cyberster specification identified by MG’s European material.
Do not decide from the trim name alone
Trim equipment, software, wheel sizes, heat-pump availability, charging hardware, seat features and driver-assistance settings can vary by country. Ask the retailer for the exact build sheet and battery terminology used in your market. A demonstrator may also have different tyres or options from the car you order, changing ride comfort and efficiency.
Range and charging: turn laboratory figures into a plan
MG quotes WLTP combined range, a standardized test result rather than a guarantee of miles or kilometres in daily use. Temperature, speed, rain, wind, traffic, cabin heating, wheel choice and driving style all affect consumption. The UK review’s official-mile figures and MG’s kilometre figures should therefore be used for comparing the two Cyberster versions, not for promising a precise journey distance.
MG’s 2025 Europe brochure estimates 10–80 percent charging in 38 minutes on a 150 kW DC public rapid charger. MG Europe’s model page also refers to 144 kW DC charging, and the source wording differs. Treat the time as an estimate under suitable conditions, not as a guaranteed result from every charger or vehicle.
Check your charging reality before buying
- Map your normal week. Record weekday mileage, typical weekend trips and the longest journey you make several times a year.
- Confirm home electrical access. Establish whether you can install a dedicated wallbox, what installation work is required and whether your parking space is legally and physically suitable.
- Check public charging on actual routes. Look for reliable rapid chargers at motorway services and destinations, not just theoretical coverage on a map.
- Allow for an operating buffer. Plan to arrive with reserve energy in cold weather or when a charger may be occupied or out of service.
- Ask about the supplied cable and connector. Verify what is included, the car’s maximum AC and DC rates in your market and any authentication or payment systems you will need.
If you cannot charge at home or work, the Cyberster can still work, but ownership becomes dependent on public infrastructure, queueing and tariff prices. Compare that routine with the convenience of refuelling a petrol roadster before deciding that an electric drivetrain is automatically cheaper or easier.
Driving character: speed versus agility
What Car?’s UK assessment praises the Cyberster’s performance and equipment but says it is less agile than lighter petrol roadsters. The review describes a fidgety ride and clunky infotainment, while characterizing the car as more of a fast grand tourer than a razor-sharp lightweight sports car. Those are reviewer judgments from a particular test, not universal measurements, but they identify the main dynamic trade-off.

On a test drive, separate the sensations that come from the electric powertrain from those created by the chassis. Instant torque can make the Cyberster feel spectacular in a straight line even if steering response is less delicate than a smaller petrol car. Drive over broken urban roads, expansion joints and undulating country lanes; a short demonstration on smooth tarmac will not reveal whether the ride unsettles you.

Questions to answer on the drive
- Can you place the front of the car confidently on a narrow, winding road?
- Does the suspension settle after a bump, or does the body continue to fidget?
- Are accelerator response and regenerative braking smooth in traffic?
- Can you operate climate, navigation and charging functions without hunting through awkward menus?
- Do the seats, steering-wheel reach and wind deflector work for your height and preferred driving position?
The Cyberster’s open cabin changes the experience as much as its acceleration. Lower the roof on a dry road and it can deliver the theatre expected from a sports car; with the roof closed, tyre noise, visibility and the seating position still determine whether it feels suitable as an everyday vehicle. Test both configurations, because roof operation and wind exposure can affect your willingness to use it year-round.
Practicality for a two-seat convertible
A two-seat roadster is a lifestyle purchase before it is a family utility vehicle. Check the boot with the roof stowed and deployed, then test the bags, charging cables and luggage you actually carry. The nominal number of litres is less useful than seeing whether a weekend bag fits without blocking the roof mechanism or emergency equipment.
Inspect entry and exit at the kerb, visibility over the shoulder, door clearance in your parking space and the height of the sill. If you regularly carry a child seat, sports equipment, pets or more than one passenger, the Cyberster cannot replace a four-seat hatchback or crossover regardless of its powertrain.
Convertible ownership also adds seasonal considerations: roof seals, drainage channels, wind noise, heat management and the security of leaving the top down at stops. Ask the dealer how these components are covered by the local warranty and where specialist repairs are performed.

Price, market and alternative cars
What Car?’s page showed a UK recommended retail price from £55,245 and a stock price of £53,309 when accessed on 13 October 2026. These are time-specific UK figures, and stock discounts can disappear or vary by dealer. They are not a quotation for another country, trim, tax regime or delivery date.
For buyers willing to use petrol, What Car? names the BMW Z4 and Porsche Boxster as indirect rivals. Its review says those petrol alternatives are more agile, while the Cyberster is very quick, well equipped and tuned with a stronger grand-touring character. Compare local transaction prices and equipment rather than assuming that a badge or list price makes one car equivalent.
Build a like-for-like cost comparison
- Purchase price, registration taxes and any incentives in your region.
- Home charger installation, electricity tariffs and public rapid-charging rates.
- Insurance, tyres, servicing and roadside-assistance terms.
- Expected depreciation and the length of time you intend to keep the car.
- Fuel cost for a petrol alternative versus electricity under your real driving pattern.
- Dealer distance, parts availability and appointment lead times.
No current electric competitor can be assumed to exist in every market. If an electric convertible is on your shortlist, verify that it is actually orderable where you live, has a confirmed delivery date and offers service support; do not compare a speculative future model with a car you can buy now.

What Car?’s review reported that no Euro NCAP safety report was available for the Cyberster at the time it was written. Safety status can change as a vehicle is tested or a rating expires, so check the current Euro NCAP database or your national testing authority before purchase. Also confirm which driver-assistance features are standard on the exact trim you are ordering.
The same review reported MG at the bottom of its 2024 Reliability Survey of 31 brands. That is a time-bound, brand-level survey result, not a Cyberster-specific failure rate and not a prediction for your individual car. Use it as a reason to investigate support rather than as proof that every Cyberster will be unreliable.

Questions for the retailer
- What is the written warranty period for the vehicle, battery and charging equipment?
- Are roadside assistance and software updates included, and for how long?
- Where is high-voltage work performed, and how many trained technicians does the dealership have?
- What happens if a battery or power-electronics part is delayed?
- Which maintenance items are scheduled, and are service intervals different between Trophy and GT?
- Can the dealer provide the latest safety documentation and the vehicle identification number of the demonstrator?
A step-by-step buying process
- Write a one-page use case. Note annual mileage, passenger needs, longest regular trip, parking arrangement, winter conditions and whether open-top driving is a priority or merely attractive.
- Choose the powertrain before options. Select Trophy for the range-oriented single-motor setup or GT for the dual-motor performance focus, then verify the local trim list.
- Get a written, dated quote. Include vehicle price, delivery, taxes, options, finance charges and any stock discount. Keep the quote tied to a specific vehicle or build code.
- Test-drive the exact configuration. Drive in town, on a rough surface and on a faster road. Operate the roof, infotainment, charging flap and driver-assistance controls yourself.
- Recreate your charging routine. Visit your intended home charger location and identify dependable public stops for your longest common journey.
- Inspect practical fit. Load your luggage, check roof-up and roof-down boot access, and confirm that the seating position works with the door and roof clearance at home.
- Verify ownership support. Read warranty exclusions, confirm the servicing outlet and ask how software, battery and collision repairs are handled.
- Recheck volatile facts before signing. Confirm price, incentives, delivery timing, safety rating, charging specification and available colours on the order date.
Which buyer should choose which car?
The daily driver with home charging
The Trophy is the more rational Cyberster for a driver who wants a quiet commute and weekend roof-down trips. Home charging reduces dependence on public networks, and the single-motor configuration aligns with the range priority. Still, confirm that a two-seat cabin and limited cargo space fit your wider household needs.
The performance-focused weekend owner
The GT makes sense when the emotional purchase is rapid acceleration and the car will cover fewer long-distance miles. Its extra performance is easiest to enjoy on suitable roads and track events, not in congested traffic. Budget for the charging and tyre demands associated with using that performance frequently.
The enthusiastic driver comparing petrol roadsters
Drive a Z4 or Boxster back-to-back with the Cyberster on the same roads. Pay attention to steering feel, body control, ride compliance, power delivery and the sound or silence you want from an open-top car. If agility and low-mass responses dominate your priorities, a petrol alternative may fit better even if the Cyberster is faster in a straight line.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The apartment resident without dependable charging
Do not order solely on advertised range. Price a realistic public-charging routine, test the busiest chargers on your routes and consider how you will cope when a unit is broken or occupied. If that routine is stressful, a petrol roadster may be the more convenient lifestyle choice until your charging access improves.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating WLTP as a promise. Use it to compare trims, then plan around weather, speed and reserve energy.
- Mixing battery figures. MG’s brochure uses a nominal 77 kWh label, while the UK review cites 74.4 kWh usable; they are not interchangeable.
- Assuming every GT is identical. Confirm local power, wheels, charging hardware and equipment because market configurations differ.
- Choosing by acceleration alone. A quick launch does not tell you whether the ride, steering or infotainment will suit daily use.
- Ignoring roof-up practicality. Measure the garage, drive-through clearance and boot access with the roof in both positions.
- Using a brand survey as a model verdict. Brand-level reliability data should prompt questions about support, not determine the outcome by itself.
- Relying on an old price or safety statement. Recheck both immediately before ordering.
Bottom line: a clear decision rule
Choose the MG Cyberster Trophy when you want the electric-roadster experience with the strongest published range, have dependable charging and value relaxed touring over maximum thrust. Choose the Cyberster GT when acceleration is the defining reason to buy and you accept its shorter official range. Choose a petrol roadster instead when lightweight agility, effortless refuelling or a broader practical package matters more than electric silence and instant torque.
Whichever path you take, make the final decision from an exact local specification, a back-to-back test drive and a written ownership-cost and support check. That process matters more than treating the phrase “electric roadster” as if it were a separate model competing with the Cyberster.
