There is no single “electric roadster range” number. For Tesla’s historical production Roadster, the service manual gives approximately 200 miles on a full charge, depending on conditions. A separate 2009 event drive reached 313 miles through deliberate energy conservation, while Tesla’s currently announced Roadster is advertised at 620 miles. Those figures describe different vehicles, methods and conditions—not a guaranteed everyday result. To plan accurately, identify the exact Roadster generation, determine which measurement produced the quoted range, and account for temperature, speed, heating or air conditioning, driving style and route.
The practical answer: use a qualified range, not a headline number
An electric roadster’s usable driving distance is an estimate tied to a particular vehicle and test basis. “Roadster” can mean Tesla’s earlier production car or Tesla’s newer, announced model. Even within one generation, the distance available from a charge changes with weather, speed, climate-control use, driving style, terrain, traffic and battery condition.

For the historical Tesla Roadster covered by its service manual, the clearest model-specific statement is: “In a fully charged state, the Roadster has a range of approximately 200 miles, depending on conditions.” That is an approximate description, not a promise that every surviving car will travel 200 miles on every route. Tesla’s manual also says the touchscreen shows state of charge and expected remaining range, so the car’s estimate can be more useful for a particular trip than a brochure figure.
Tesla’s current Roadster product page displays 620 miles. That is a current company claim for an announced vehicle, accessed on October 13, 2026; it is not an independently verified real-world result from a completed production car. Treating 620 miles as the expected range of the older Roadster would combine claims from different generations.

What the published Roadster figures actually mean
| Figure | Vehicle or event | Measurement basis and conditions | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approximately 200 miles | Historical Tesla Roadster | Tesla service manual; full-charge approximation that “depends on conditions.” Publication date is not stated in the referenced page. | Best model-specific starting point for the older production Roadster, but not a guarantee for a particular car or route. |
| 313 miles on one charge | Two Roadster owners in the 2009 Global Green Challenge | Tesla’s 2009 investor-relations release reports an event drive using energy-conservation techniques; the car reportedly had an estimated 38 miles remaining. | An exceptional, event-specific achievement—not an everyday range expectation. |
| 620 miles | Tesla’s currently announced Roadster | Number displayed on Tesla’s product page accessed October 13, 2026. The page does not establish a completed production-car real-world test. | A current manufacturer claim for a different, announced generation; do not apply it to the historical Roadster. |
The approximately 200-mile manual statement and the 313-mile event result do not contradict each other. They answer different questions. One is a general service-manual approximation under unspecified conditions; the other is a carefully managed single drive. The 620-mile figure belongs to an announced successor rather than the production car described in that manual.
No model-year-specific, independent series of ordinary driving tests establishes a universal “real-world Roadster range.” Any precise prediction for an individual used car would require information about that car’s battery health, tires, software, temperature and route.
Why EPA range is not the same as your trip result
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency determines electric-vehicle range in laboratory testing. The vehicle runs on a dynamometer, beginning with a full charge, through repeated city or highway driving cycles until it can no longer drive. Manufacturers may use a single-cycle or a multi-cycle method.

EPA then adjusts the laboratory results for real-world influences that the controlled procedure does not fully represent. The agency specifically identifies air-conditioning use, cold temperatures, high speed and aggressive driving among the factors included in its adjustment. EPA says the most common approach uses a factor of 0.7. In its illustrative example, a 200-mile highway laboratory result becomes 140 miles after that adjustment. EPA then combines adjusted city and highway values using 55% city and 45% highway weighting to create a combined label value.
Those 200-mile, 140-mile and 55/45 figures explain EPA’s method; they are not test results for a particular Roadster. A label is therefore a standardized comparison tool, not an assurance that your route will match the number. A driver traveling quickly in cold weather with the heater running can see a materially different result from a driver moving slowly in mild weather.
Historical Roadster: how to interpret the approximately 200-mile statement
It is a manual estimate, not a remaining-capacity guarantee
The service manual’s wording matters: “approximately” and “depending on conditions.” It does not specify one speed, temperature, route profile or climate-control setting that every owner should reproduce. It also does not establish the battery capacity of every car still on the road.

Use the car’s display during a trip
The same manual says the touchscreen displays state of charge and expected remaining range. Watch that estimate as conditions change rather than assuming the starting number will decline in a perfectly linear way. A long high-speed section, a temperature change or increased climate-control demand can alter the estimate.
Do not transfer the number to another generation
The manual describes the historical Roadster it covers. It is not evidence for Tesla’s currently announced Roadster, and the announced model’s 620-mile product-page claim is not evidence for an older car.
What the 313-mile drive proves—and what it does not
Tesla reported that two Roadster owners drove 313 miles on a single charge in the 2009 Global Green Challenge. The release says the car still had an estimated 38 miles remaining and quotes driver Simon Hackett and co-driver Emilis Prelgauskas describing energy-conservation techniques learned from competitive gliding.

This is useful evidence that a Roadster could travel far beyond the manual’s approximate figure under a specially managed drive. It is not a representative commute, highway journey or independent test series. The drivers’ objective was energy conservation, and the event result is one drive under event-specific conditions. Use it as an upper-end historical example, not as the distance to promise a passenger or schedule as a normal arrival point.
Conditions that can move real-world range
Temperature
Cold temperatures are one of the factors EPA accounts for when converting laboratory results to a label value. They can make a trip consume more energy than a mild-weather drive. A range estimate observed in one season should not automatically be used as a winter planning baseline.

Heating and air conditioning
EPA identifies HVAC use, including air conditioning, as a real-world factor. If the cabin requires substantial heating or cooling, the energy available for propulsion is shared with climate control. Compare trips made with similar cabin settings before treating their displayed range as directly comparable.

Speed and driving style
EPA specifically includes high speed and aggressive driving in its adjustment factors. Rapid acceleration, high cruising speeds and frequent hard braking generally make an energy-conservation result like the 313-mile event drive impossible to reproduce in ordinary traffic.
Route and terrain
Route conditions matter alongside the car’s specification. Stop-and-go city driving, sustained motorway speed, hills, headwinds, payload and traffic can produce different consumption even when the start and end points are the same. When comparing two range claims, record which of these conditions are known instead of treating the numbers as interchangeable.
Battery condition
The available sources do not provide a battery-health study or a model-year-specific degradation curve. The historical manual’s approximately 200-mile statement therefore cannot predict the range of an individual used Roadster. A buyer or owner needs a current, vehicle-specific assessment rather than an assumption that every older car retains the manual figure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to plan a real trip in an electric roadster
- Identify the exact car. Record the generation, model year if known, software version if relevant to the vehicle’s display, and whether you are planning for the historical production Roadster or the currently announced model. Never merge the 200-mile manual estimate with the announced Roadster’s 620-mile claim.
- Choose the right baseline. For the historical Roadster, start with the service manual’s approximately 200-mile full-charge statement. Label it as a conditional approximation, not a guaranteed distance. For the announced Roadster, label 620 miles as Tesla’s product-page claim rather than a tested trip result.
- Match the baseline to the route. Note expected temperature, highway speed, city traffic, hills, wind, passenger or cargo load, and HVAC use. The more your route differs from the conditions behind a quoted number, the less useful that number is without a margin.
- Watch the vehicle’s estimate. The historical Roadster’s touchscreen reports state of charge and expected remaining range. Check it after the route begins and after major changes such as entering a high-speed road or turning on substantial heating or cooling.
- Plan charging before the displayed estimate becomes critical. Select a charging opportunity that fits the exact vehicle and route. The cited manual references Home Connector and Mobile Connector equipment, but the available information does not establish current retail availability or compatibility for a specific car, so verify fit before relying on any hardware.
- Recalculate when conditions change. If cold weather arrives, speeds increase or the route becomes hillier, treat the original estimate as stale. Use the car’s updated display and revise the next charging stop rather than trying to preserve a brochure number.
A simple framework for comparing any two range claims
| Question | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Which vehicle? | Generation, model and model year | Historical and announced Roadsters are not the same product. |
| Who made the claim? | Manufacturer, EPA label, independent tester or owner | Authority and purpose differ between a manual estimate, a regulated method and an event report. |
| What was measured? | Laboratory label, controlled road test, owner trip or company claim | A single number can hide radically different methods. |
| Under what conditions? | Temperature, speed, HVAC, terrain, traffic and driving style | These conditions can move consumption away from a quoted baseline. |
| When was it reported? | Date of the document or webpage | A 2009 event report and a product page accessed in 2026 describe different time periods. |
| Is it repeatable? | One exceptional drive or a repeatable test procedure | The 313-mile drive is an event result, not an everyday test series. |
Common range mistakes
- Quoting 620 miles as an owner-tested result. The figure is displayed on the current product page for an announced Roadster and is not substantiated there by a completed production-car real-world test.
- Promising 313 miles for normal travel. The Global Green Challenge drive involved deliberate energy conservation and should remain an exceptional example.
- Calling 200 miles a guaranteed minimum. The manual says approximately 200 miles and adds “depending on conditions.”
- Comparing numbers without their basis. A laboratory-adjusted label, a service-manual approximation and a single owner event drive are not equivalent measurements.
- Assuming an older battery matches the manual. No cited source establishes the current battery health of an individual used Roadster.
- Planning to arrive at zero. A displayed estimate changes with conditions; leave a practical charging plan rather than treating the final indicated mile as a target.
What range should you expect?
If you mean the historical production Tesla Roadster, use approximately 200 miles on a full charge as the manual’s conditional reference point, then adjust your expectations for the actual weather, route, speed, HVAC use and vehicle condition. A 313-mile result is possible only as a documented, exceptional energy-conservation drive and should not be used as an everyday promise.
If you mean Tesla’s currently announced Roadster, 620 miles is the company’s displayed product-page claim as of October 13, 2026. Because that page does not provide a completed production-car real-world test, it should remain a claim to verify when the vehicle and independent testing are available—not a current trip-planning number.
The most defensible answer is therefore vehicle-specific: identify the generation, keep the measurement basis attached to every figure, and use the car’s live estimate together with route conditions before deciding how far you can travel between charges.
