The buying decision is therefore not based on a universal “hours per charge” figure. It requires three linked checks: how much productive work the machine performs before recharging, whether the jobsite can deliver the required power, and whether purchase, infrastructure, energy, maintenance and end-of-life costs work over the machine’s expected life.
Some published cases show substantial operating savings, but they are conditional. An electric loader modelled by EECA had 5% lower total cost of ownership (TCO) at its rated 16,000 operating hours, while another reported case compared NZ$3,250 of electricity with more than NZ$12,200 of hypothetical diesel cost over 548 working hours. Neither result should be transferred to a different machine, tariff, utilization rate or site without rebuilding the calculation.

The buying decision in one sentence
Buy an electric excavator, loader, reach stacker or other construction machine when its measured or credibly estimated work cycle reaches your required shift output, its charging plan fits the schedule and site electrical capacity, and a location-specific lifecycle model remains acceptable under conservative energy, utilization and battery assumptions.

Range is a duty-cycle question, not a headline number
Why “hours per charge” varies
Battery runtime changes with the work being done. A machine travelling between work areas, repeatedly lifting near its rated capacity or operating an attachment at high hydraulic demand will use energy differently from one that spends much of the shift idling, sorting or making short movements. Ambient temperature, terrain, operator technique, payload, tire or track condition and auxiliary loads can also alter consumption.
Ask the manufacturer or authorized dealer for a duty-cycle estimate that matches your intended application. Require the assumptions in writing: productive hours per shift, idle percentage, payload, travel distance, attachment, ambient conditions, charging state-of-charge limits and whether the estimate includes reserve energy. A single maximum-runtime number is not a substitute for this information.
Build a shift energy model
Start with the schedule rather than the battery specification. Record the following for a representative week:
- Length of each shift and the legally or operationally available break periods.
- Hours spent digging, loading, lifting, grading, hauling, sorting or using a high-demand attachment.
- Idle, standby and travel time, including movement between separated work areas.
- Payload and cycle frequency, seasonal changes and expected utilization by month.
- Whether a second machine, spare battery or charging point can cover a recharge period.
Convert the machine’s estimated consumption into energy required for that schedule. A simple planning expression is required energy = average demand (kW) × operating time (h). Compare that requirement with usable battery energy, not only the nominal pack capacity. Keep a reserve for weather, queues, unexpected travel and the manufacturer’s recommended minimum state of charge.

Validate before committing fleet capital
Use a demonstration, rental or controlled trial where available. Run the machine on the same material, attachment and cycle expected in production, and log battery state of charge at regular intervals. Record output, interruptions, charging events, ambient conditions and operator changes. No independently tested runtime is established here, so supplier estimates should be treated as planning inputs until your own duty-cycle evidence confirms them.
Request separate figures for a normal shift, a high-demand shift and a cold- or hot-weather shift. If the machine cannot complete the longest planned shift, decide explicitly whether the gap will be covered by a scheduled break, opportunity charging, battery swapping, a second machine or a revised production plan.
How long do they take to charge?
Charging time depends on both battery capacity and charger power. A first-order estimate is charging time (h) = battery energy (kWh) ÷ charger power (kW), then add conversion losses, tapering near full charge, thermal limits and any site power-management restrictions. The charger’s nameplate power is not always the power delivered throughout the session.
Published examples show the range of arrangements
| Equipment example | Battery | Charger | Reported charging time | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EECA reach stacker example | 269 kWh | 40 kW | Overnight | Low-power charging can work when the machine has a long parked window; this is an operating example, not a universal runtime or charge-time promise. |
| EECA loader example | 282 kWh | 90 kW | Four hours | Suitable only when the schedule provides a multi-hour recharge period and the site can sustain the stated power. |
| Fulton Hogan loader case | 282 kWh | 240 kW | 80 minutes to full charge | High-power charging can support a short opportunity window, but requires compatible equipment and adequate site capacity. |
These are separate EECA operating examples, not a controlled comparison. Differences in charger behavior, battery state of charge, thermal conditions and machine configuration mean you should not infer that one charger will deliver the same result on another model.

Choose a charging pattern
- Overnight depot charging: Lowest operational complexity when the machine returns to a known parking location for enough hours. Confirm that the charger can finish before dispatch and that simultaneous charging will not exceed the site connection.
- Break-time or opportunity charging: Useful when the machine has predictable pauses. Verify that the available minutes, rather than the charger’s maximum rating, restore enough usable energy for the next work block.
- Battery swapping: Can preserve production when a charged spare battery and safe handling process are available. Include the capital cost, storage, lifting equipment, staff training and battery lifecycle in the TCO model.
- Shared charging: A fast charger serving several machines can lower incremental infrastructure cost, but only if schedules are coordinated and queuing cannot stop production.
- Mobile or temporary charging: May suit remote or changing projects, but assess transport, fuel or generator interfaces, weather protection, grounding and permitting before treating it as a dependable plan.
Ask the supplier for the supported charging power range, connector standard, maximum continuous input, charge curve, thermal derating behavior, required communications or software and the conditions under which the quoted time was measured. Do not assume a cable or charger listed for one model is compatible with another.
Can your jobsite support the charger?
What installation includes
A charger is only one part of the infrastructure. U.S. Department of Energy guidance identifies hardware, software, construction and other soft costs, and notes that energization timing varies with existing site capacity, grid upgrades, equipment, permitting and local conditions. A charger quote that excludes switchgear, trenching, transformer work, civil works, design, inspections, communications or utility fees is not a complete project budget.
Run a site-readiness review
- Document the electrical baseline. Obtain the service voltage, transformer rating, spare capacity, peak demand history and single-line diagram for the depot or project site.
- Calculate coincident load. Add the proposed charger load to workshops, lighting, heating, offices, pumps and other equipment that may operate at the same time.
- Confirm machine and charger compatibility. Match connector, voltage, communications, environmental rating and the machine’s permitted charging power.
- Ask the utility about energization. Establish whether a service upgrade, transformer, new meter, protection study or scheduled outage is required, and obtain a written timeline.
- Price civil and safety work. Include foundations, bollards, cable management, drainage, vehicle clearance, emergency isolation, signage, fire protection and inspection requirements.
- Plan access and control. Decide where machines park, how cables are protected, who can authorize charging, how sessions are logged and what happens when several machines arrive together.
- Allow for expansion. Test a future case with additional machines. Installing capacity once may be cheaper than repeatedly upgrading a constrained service.
Do not schedule equipment delivery on the assumption that a charger can be energized immediately. Grid studies, permits and construction can become the critical path even when the charging hardware is in stock.

DOE Federal Energy Management Program guidance says buyers should account for equipment and installation, energy, maintenance, repair or replacement and disposal over the product’s life. The same principle applies to private fleets. Build a machine-specific model with these inputs:

- Purchase price, taxes, delivery, attachments and financing rate.
- Charger hardware, design, construction, utility work, permits and commissioning.
- Electricity tariff structure, demand charges, time-of-use rates and charging losses.
- Diesel or other displaced fuel price, including expected price changes.
- Annual operating hours, utilization by season and productive output.
- Scheduled maintenance, consumables, software or service contracts and unscheduled repairs.
- Downtime cost, replacement-machine rental and lost production during charging or repairs.
- Battery warranty, degradation, residual capacity, replacement probability and replacement price.
- Insurance, resale value, end-of-life handling and disposal.
Separate cash costs from assumptions. A low energy price or optimistic annual utilization can make an electric machine look attractive on paper while leaving little margin if the machine works fewer hours or demand charges rise.
EECA’s modelled loader case
EECA reported 5% lower TCO for an electric loader when fully utilized for the manufacturer-rated 16,000 operating hours. The result came from a model using supplier quotes from 2023, 8% interest, an eight-year and 16,000-hour life, eight hours per day over 260 days per year, fuel at NZ$1.90 per litre, electricity at NZ$0.199 per kWh using 2022 commercial rates, a fast charger shared across 2.5 machines, manufacturer-estimated maintenance and no battery replacement during the machine’s life.
| Model input or output | Value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Service life | Eight years / 16,000 hours | EECA model assumption for the loader case. |
| Operating schedule | Eight hours per day, 260 days per year | Assumed full utilization; actual fleet schedules may be lower. |
| Finance rate | 8% | Model assumption, not a universal borrowing rate. |
| Diesel price | NZ$1.90/L | Price used in the model; local and current prices differ. |
| Electricity price | NZ$0.199/kWh | 2022 commercial rate used by the model. |
| Fast-charger sharing | One charger per 2.5 machines | Assumes coordinated utilization and available capacity. |
| Modelled TCO result | 5% lower for electric | Applies only to this set of assumptions at 16,000 hours. |
| Fuel-cost result | Around 73% lower | Model output, not a universal measured saving. |
| Maintenance result | 11% lower | Model output based on manufacturer estimates. |
The model did not include battery replacement over the machine life. Buyers should create a sensitivity case that adds replacement cost, reduced capacity or a shorter service life unless a warranty and operating evidence justify excluding it.

EECA describes Fulton Hogan spending NZ$3,250 on electricity during 548 working hours over 5.5 months in 2023–24. The comparison estimated that diesel would have cost more than NZ$12,200 at NZ$2 per litre. This is a geographically and temporally specific case: electricity and diesel prices, machine efficiency, utilization and site conditions elsewhere will produce different results.

Calculate sensitivity, not one payback date
Run at least three cases: conservative, expected and favorable. Change annual hours, electricity price, diesel price, charger installation cost, demand charges, maintenance, downtime and battery replacement independently. Test what happens if the machine operates 25% fewer hours than planned or if the charger serves only one machine instead of the expected shared fleet.
Use discounted cash flow or an equivalent lifecycle method that treats costs in the same currency and year. A simple undiscounted comparison can be useful for screening, but financing and replacement timing can materially change the result. Include any residual value only when a realistic resale or disposal assumption exists.

A procurement process that limits surprises
- Define the reference job. Select a representative project and write down material, attachment, payload, cycle time, travel, shift length and weather range.
- Set a minimum output. Specify required tonnes, loads, cubic metres, lifts or other measurable production per shift, plus a reserve requirement.
- Request comparable supplier data. Ask each supplier for usable battery energy, duty-cycle consumption, charging curve, compatible hardware, warranty and tested assumptions.
- Model charging windows. Map every planned charging event to a physical parking location and calculate the energy restored during that window.
- Obtain a site electrical study. Have a qualified contractor and utility confirm capacity, protection, construction, permit and energization requirements.
- Run a field validation. Measure output and state-of-charge decline on the intended material and attachment. Record interruptions and charging behavior.
- Build the TCO sensitivity model. Include financing, infrastructure, energy, maintenance, downtime, battery and disposal assumptions, then stress the variables that matter most.
- Contract for performance information. Specify commissioning tests, charger compatibility, service response, parts availability, warranty remedies and the data that will be supplied during operation.
- Scale in stages. Start with a duty cycle that has a dependable charging window, then expand only after measured utilization and infrastructure performance support the next purchase.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Machine finishes a shift with too little reserve | Actual duty cycle is more intensive than the supplier estimate, or travel and idle time were omitted. | Log energy by task, reduce unsupported assumptions, add opportunity charging or specify a larger usable battery. |
| Charging misses the dispatch time | Charger power is lower than expected, charging tapers near full, or several machines share one point. | Use the real charge curve, stagger sessions, increase power where the site permits, or add a second charger. |
| Installation budget overruns | Transformer, trenching, protection, permit or utility work was excluded. | Obtain a complete design-and-energization quote before approving the machine order. |
| Fleet queues for a charger | Shared-charger ratio assumed ideal scheduling and ignored simultaneous demand. | Model peak-day arrivals, reserve a charging sequence and price additional capacity. |
| Expected TCO advantage disappears | Utilization is below the model, electricity demand charges are higher, or battery replacement was omitted. | Recalculate with conservative hours, current tariffs and explicit battery scenarios. |
| Unexpected production loss | Charging downtime or a failed machine has no replacement plan. | Quantify downtime, maintain a contingency machine or battery and set service-response requirements. |
When the numbers support a purchase
An electric machine is a strong candidate when the work cycle is measurable, the machine can complete the required output with a defined reserve, and the site has a reliable overnight or opportunity-charging window. The case strengthens when several machines can share infrastructure without queuing, when existing electrical capacity avoids major construction, or when reduced exhaust and noise solve a real site constraint.
Delay or redesign the purchase when runtime is based only on a maximum-hours claim, the charger cannot be energized on the project schedule, the site lacks a credible backup for charging interruptions, or the TCO advantage depends on full utilization that the fleet cannot demonstrate. In those situations, a trial, a smaller deployment or a hybrid fleet may be more prudent than a large irreversible order.
Bottom line
Electric construction equipment is neither automatically cheaper nor automatically limited to short shifts. Its value depends on the match between duty cycle, usable battery energy, charging power, site readiness and lifetime utilization. Demand comparable duty-cycle evidence, design the charging workflow before delivery, and approve the purchase only after a local TCO model survives conservative assumptions for energy prices, infrastructure, downtime and battery replacement.
