Yes, some current electric cars still use real buttons, dials and switches—but none of the examples documented here is completely physical. The useful distinction is which everyday tasks you can perform by touch. A car might give you direct temperature and fan buttons while leaving recirculation on a display, or retain steering-wheel controls while moving all climate adjustments into a menu.
If simple operation matters, test the exact car and ask one practical question: can you set temperature, fan speed and front defrost without hunting through a touchscreen? Model year, trim and market can change the answer, so a feature list is only a starting point.

What “physical buttons” means in an electric car
EV interiors generally fall on a spectrum rather than into “buttons” and “no buttons” categories. A physical control has a mechanically identifiable surface—a button, rocker, dial, stalk or paddle—that you can locate without looking. A touch panel, capacitive strip or touchscreen may respond to a press but usually gives less tactile information.
Three levels of physical control
- Dedicated controls: one button or dial performs one common job, such as volume or temperature.
- Shared physical controls: a button opens a function, while further adjustments happen on a display. A defrost key may be physical even though airflow direction is digital.
- Screen-led operation: the display is the primary interface, with only steering-wheel, stalk or emergency controls remaining outside it.
That distinction matters because an EV can feel straightforward for audio but cumbersome for climate, or the reverse. Button count alone cannot tell you how many steps a driver needs for a common task.

2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric: a mixed cabin with direct climate basics
Porsche describes frequently used air-conditioning and audio-volume functions as analog. Its climate panel has four physical buttons that cover driver and passenger temperature and fan speed. Those are the adjustments many drivers make repeatedly, so they can be found without opening a menu.
The arrangement is not entirely mechanical. Further climate settings are reached through a menu on the Flow Display. Before ordering, check the local equipment list and sit in the actual trim: the documented Porsche material establishes the control concept, not identical specification in every market.

The official United Kingdom manual identifies physical front controls for maximum defrost and for rear-window and mirror heating. Rear-seat heating also has physical buttons. These are useful visibility and comfort functions that can be triggered directly.

Front temperature and several other climate functions are assigned to the centre display. Therefore, describing this car as having “physical climate controls” without qualification would be misleading: the controls are function-specific, not a full set of front climate dials.
Updated 2026 CUPRA Born: strong tactile driving controls, climate still uncertain
The updated Born documentation confirms physical controls on the steering wheel, separate satellite buttons for driving modes and regenerative-braking paddles on the 170 kW and 240 kW motor versions. Drivers who mainly want tactile access to speed, mode and energy-recovery choices should inspect those controls in person.
The cited press-kit passage does not establish dedicated climate buttons. Do not infer their presence from the steering-wheel hardware; use the local configurator or owner’s manual to check temperature, fan, demist and seat-heating operation.
Volvo EX30: a clear screen-led reference point
The United States specification lists a 12.3-inch central display and a two-zone climate system, with the feature description placing climate and other vehicle functions on the display. This makes the EX30 a useful contrast to cars that give temperature or defrost its own button.

“Display-controlled” does not prove that every operation is touchscreen-only, and equipment can differ by market. Test the exact vehicle to see how many taps are required for the functions you use most.
Porsche Macan Electric: useful secondary evidence, not a definitive inventory
A 2025 TechRadar review reported physical controls for functions such as air conditioning. Because this is an independent reviewer’s observation rather than a complete factory control map, treat it as a prompt for an in-person check. Confirm the model year, trim and regional specification before relying on it.
Compare the controls that actually affect your drive
Climate and seat comfort
Check temperature, fan speed, air-conditioning enablement, recirculation, airflow direction and seat heating separately. A vehicle may provide a physical temperature rocker but place recirculation or seat settings behind a climate screen. Ask the salesperson to demonstrate each operation with navigation or another important display already open; this reveals whether a climate change interrupts the information you were using.

Defrost and visibility
Press the front maximum-defrost control, rear-window heater and mirror heater while seated normally. Confirm that the symbols are recognizable by touch and that the control is reachable without leaning forward. Also test wiper speed and washer activation, because a tactile climate layout does not guarantee tactile wiper controls.

Driving controls
Identify the indicator and wiper stalks, gear selection, parking control, drive-mode switch and regenerative-braking adjustment. Steering-wheel buttons or paddles can keep these actions outside the screen, but their position and pressure vary. Cycle through the modes while stationary and make sure you can distinguish neighboring controls without looking down.
Audio and steering-wheel functions
Try changing volume, muting, track selection and voice-assistant activation by feel. A rotary volume control is easy to identify, while flat capacitive surfaces may require visual confirmation. Check whether a long press performs a different command from a short press; that hidden behavior affects how predictable the interface feels.
Screen dependence and interruption
Count the steps for five tasks you perform often: temperature, fan speed, front defrost, audio volume and drive mode. Note whether a menu covers navigation, whether the control returns automatically to the previous screen and whether the system responds while wearing gloves. This is a more useful comparison than counting every button in the cabin.

- Confirm the identity. Record model year, battery and motor version, trim, country and option package. Photograph the dashboard and steering wheel so you do not confuse a display car with the car you can order.
- Start with a cold cabin. Set a different temperature for driver and passenger, change fan speed, switch air conditioning and activate recirculation. Mark each action as physical, touch-sensitive or screen-only.
- Test visibility controls. Use front maximum defrost, rear-window and mirror heating, then return to normal airflow. Check that the symbols and feedback are clear without staring at the screen.
- Test while moving only when safe. On a supervised drive, adjust volume, track, drive mode and regenerative braking using the normal seating position. Do not perform unfamiliar menu operations in traffic.
- Repeat with gloves. Winter gloves can expose controls that are too close together or surfaces that do not register reliably. Test the controls you would use in the climate where you drive.
- Read the local manual. Search the exact manual for “climate,” “defrost,” “rear window,” “seat heating,” “drive mode” and “regenerative braking.” Manuals often reveal whether a button opens a menu rather than directly changing a setting.
- Record the number of steps. Write down the shortest repeatable sequence for each task. Keep the notes with the vehicle quotation so a trim change does not silently alter the interface.
Why model year and market checks are essential
The examples above combine a United Kingdom manual, United States specifications, Porsche material and a European manufacturer press kit. A control can be standard in one market, optional in another or changed during a model-year update. Do not transfer a review from one year to another without checking the current manual. A dealer’s demonstration car may have an option package that is unavailable on the base trim. If the manufacturer’s configurator and manual disagree, ask for the VIN-specific equipment list or a written clarification before placing an order.
Who benefits most from physical controls?
- Drivers who make frequent adjustments: direct buttons reduce the need to leave the road view to change temperature or demist.
