Choose an electric car if you can charge reliably at home or work, drive enough kilometres to benefit from lower energy and routine-service costs, and can plan longer journeys around charging. Choose a petrol car if charging is uncertain, you regularly drive routes where a charging stop is impractical, or a lower purchase price matters more than future running costs. There is no India-wide winner: compare a specific electric model with a similar petrol model using your on-road prices, annual distance, local energy prices, trip pattern, warranty terms and likely ownership period.
This guide gives you a practical way to make that comparison, explains what national policy and registration numbers do—and do not—tell you about local ownership, and shows the calculations to complete before you book either car.

What actually decides the better choice
The drivetrain is only one part of the decision. Your result is usually determined by six interacting variables:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Purchase price: compare current on-road prices, including insurance, registration, taxes, accessories and any benefit you have confirmed in writing.
- Annual distance: a driver covering 5,000 km a year has less opportunity to recover a higher EV price through cheaper energy than a driver covering 20,000 km.
- Energy cost and efficiency: use your electricity tariff, the share of home versus public charging, petrol price and realistic fuel economy—not a brochure maximum.
- Charging access: a charger that exists somewhere in your city is not the same as a usable socket at your parking space or on your regular routes.
- Time and trip pattern: daily urban trips can fit overnight charging; frequent inter-city travel may make petrol refuelling more convenient.
- Ownership assumptions: include scheduled maintenance, warranty and battery coverage, tyres, insurance, financing and your expected resale value.
Do not announce a “break-even kilometre” until all of those inputs are visible. Future petrol and electricity prices are uncertain; a 2026 CSEP scenario analysis held both prices constant in its projections rather than pretending to know their future path (CSEP, 2026).

Electric car versus petrol car: the ownership trade-off
| Question | Electric car | Petrol car |
|---|---|---|
| Tailpipe emissions | No exhaust from a tailpipe while driving. This does not, by itself, compare electricity-generation or full life-cycle emissions. | Produces tailpipe exhaust while the engine runs. |
| Up-front price | Often higher for a comparable size and equipment level; verify the actual on-road difference. | Often lower at purchase, especially when comparing entry variants. |
| Energy routine | Usually charge while parked; charging time depends on the car, charger, battery temperature and electrical supply. | Refuel at a petrol station in a short stop; the station network is familiar on most established routes. |
| Routine mechanical service | Fewer engine-related components to service, but tyres, brakes, suspension, fluids, air-conditioning and electronics still need attention. | Requires engine, transmission, exhaust and related servicing in addition to common wear items. |
| Long-trip planning | Requires route, charger and state-of-charge planning; a failed or occupied charger can add delay. | Usually easier to refuel on established highways, subject to station availability and queues. |
| Resale and technology risk | Depends on battery condition, warranty transferability, charging standard, software support and the pace of new models. | Depends on age, kilometres, condition, fuel prices, emissions rules and local demand. |
Lower EV energy and routine-maintenance spending can offset a higher purchase price, but only the matched cars and your usage can show whether it does so within your ownership period.
How to calculate your personal running cost
1. Record the inputs for a matched pair
- Choose an electric car and petrol car in the same broad size and use class. Compare equivalent safety and equipment, not a premium EV with a basic petrol hatchback.
- Write down each model’s current on-road price in your state. Keep confirmed rebates or tax waivers separate from unconfirmed dealer claims.
- Estimate realistic annual kilometres from your calendar, commute and weekend driving. Separate predictable daily kilometres from occasional road trips.
- Use observed or owner-reported real-world efficiency where available: kilometres per kWh for the EV and kilometres per litre for the petrol car.
- Record your residential electricity tariff, expected home-charging losses, public-charging rate and the percentage of charging likely to use each source. For petrol, record the price per litre at the places where you normally fill.
- Add scheduled service, consumables, insurance, financing, warranty and battery-coverage assumptions. Ask the manufacturer or dealer which warranties transfer to a second owner.
- Choose an ownership period and a conservative resale estimate for both cars. If you cannot support a resale estimate, run a low, middle and high case instead of using a single precise number.
2. Use transparent formulas
For a petrol car, annual fuel cost is:
annual kilometres ÷ real-world km per litre × petrol price per litre
For an EV, annual energy cost is:
annual kilometres ÷ real-world km per kWh × blended electricity price per kWh
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Your blended electricity price should include the actual mix of home, workplace and public charging. If you charge 80% at home and 20% publicly, calculate each portion separately rather than applying a cheap home tariff to every kilometre. Add a reasonable allowance for charging losses if your efficiency figure is measured at the battery rather than at the wall.

Then compare total cost of ownership:
on-road price + energy + maintenance + insurance + financing − resale value
Run the calculation at your low and high annual-kilometre estimates. A result that changes from petrol to EV when your distance moves modestly is a sensitivity warning, not a decisive verdict.
3. Treat break-even as a range
The simple purchase-price break-even distance is:
EV price premium ÷ (petrol cost per kilometre − EV energy cost per kilometre)

What the official cost example does—and does not—prove
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) explains that an EV can cost more to procure while charging, maintenance and operating costs may be lower (BEE EV cost and ownership FAQs). Its illustrative example assumes a Tata Tigor returning about 20 km/l, petrol at ₹86.95 per litre on 8 February 2021, and Delhi home charging at ₹4.5 per kWh. It calculates about ₹434.75 for 100 km in the petrol example and ₹96.75 for a full 21.5 kWh charge of a Tata Tigor EV.
Those figures are not a current India-wide comparison. The petrol price and Delhi tariff are dated assumptions, the vehicles and trims are specific, and the calculation compares a full battery charge with 100 km of petrol driving. Use the example to understand the method, then replace every input with your tariff, fuel price, efficiency and charging mix.
Charging: the ownership question petrol cannot avoid
Home and workplace access
Before buying an EV, identify the exact parking bay where the car will spend most nights. Confirm permission from the housing society, landlord or employer; check the route from the electrical panel; and obtain an electrician’s assessment of supply capacity, earthing, protection and cable routing. Verify the car’s connector, maximum AC charging rate and the installation requirements for the supplied cable or wall unit. A compatible home charger is a physical accessory, but compatibility and installation must be checked for your exact car and electrical connection.

Charging time depends on hardware
BEE gives indicative times for an electric car with a battery of about 30 kWh: reaching 80% can take less than an hour on a 50 kW fast charger and around eight hours through a 15 A slow or moderate connection (BEE, Electric Vehicles). These are source examples, not promises for every vehicle. Actual time varies with battery size, state of charge, temperature, the car’s acceptance limit, charger output and whether the charger is sharing power.
For daily use, overnight AC charging may be sufficient even when a fast charger is inconvenient. For a long trip, calculate the kilometres you need to add, the charger’s likely output and a reserve for weather, traffic, detours and queues. Do not plan a route that requires arriving at zero percent.
Assess your route, not a national charger headline
The Press Information Bureau reported ₹2,000 crore allocated under PM E-DRIVE for public EV charging infrastructure and noted that the Ministry of Power issued charging-infrastructure guidelines on 17 September 2024 (PIB, 11 March 2025). National investment can improve the network, but it cannot establish that a charger is convenient at your home, neighbourhood or specific highway stop. Test your own routes in the charging apps you would actually use, check recent status, and identify at least one alternative at each critical leg.

What changes with an EV
An EV has no engine oil, exhaust system, fuel pump, fuel line or fuel tank. BEE describes the absence of tailpipe exhaust and those fuel-system components in its EV overview (BEE, Electric Vehicles). That can simplify routine mechanical service, but it does not make ownership maintenance-free. Budget for tyres, brake components, suspension, steering, cabin filters, air-conditioning, coolant or other fluids specified by the manufacturer, software and inspections.

Questions to ask before signing
- What is the scheduled service interval and cost for the exact variant?
- What does the vehicle warranty cover, for how long and at what distance?
- What are the battery warranty’s time, kilometre and capacity-retention conditions?
- Does battery coverage transfer if you sell the car?
- Which charging equipment is included, and who pays for installation or a replacement cable?
- Where is the nearest authorised service centre, and what is the process if the car cannot charge?
Do not infer battery life, replacement cost or resale value from a different model. Require the written warranty and service schedule for the vehicle you are considering.
Long trips, weather and everyday usability
When an EV fits naturally
- Your weekday driving is predictable and the car returns to a known parking place most nights.
- You can install or reliably access AC charging at home or work.
- Most trips are urban or regional, and you are willing to spend a few minutes planning occasional fast-charge stops.
- You expect to keep the car long enough for energy and service savings to matter.
When petrol remains the lower-friction choice
- You live in a building where a dedicated connection is not permitted or practical.
- Your work involves spontaneous, high-kilometre travel or routes with uncertain charger coverage.
- You need the lowest possible purchase price and may sell the car soon.
- Your regular trips involve towing, heavy loads, extreme heat or terrain where you have not verified the EV’s range and charging performance.
Range is not a single fixed distance. Speed, traffic, air-conditioning, payload, gradients, tyre pressure and temperature change consumption. For an EV, compare the usable range you can achieve with a reserve—not only the advertised test-cycle number. For a petrol car, a similar practical rule is to keep enough fuel for an unexpected detour rather than treating the dashboard estimate as a guarantee.
India’s policy and market context
India’s national figures show direction, not a guarantee for your purchase. The PIB reported 1,950,490 EV registrations out of 26,207,453 total vehicle registrations in calendar 2024, a 7.44% share across all vehicle segments—not electric passenger cars alone (PIB, 11 March 2025). The same release’s charging allocation is a policy commitment, not a count of working chargers on your route.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries’ PM E-DRIVE page states an initial outlay of ₹10,900 crore and an extension through 31 March 2028 for covered segments, with the stated exception that L5 electric three-wheelers closed on 26 December 2025 (PM E-DRIVE, Ministry of Heavy Industries). The International Energy Agency says the scheme launched in October 2024 focused on electric two- and three-wheelers, buses, trucks and charging infrastructure, excluding electric cars at launch. It also notes that GST measures and state-level tax, registration or road-tax waivers may support EVs (IEA, Global EV Outlook 2025).
Therefore, do not subtract a subsidy from an electric-car quote unless the current official scheme and your state notification confirm the buyer, vehicle, date, price cap and documentation requirements. NITI Aayog’s India Electric Mobility Index 2024 presents state-level adoption and charging-readiness indicators, reinforcing that state context differs (NITI Aayog, India Electric Mobility Index 2024).
A practical decision worksheet
Complete this table for the two exact cars before taking a test drive. “Not stated” is better than an unsupported guess.
| Input | Electric car | Petrol car |

| Confirmed incentive | Official eligibility and amount, or none | Official eligibility and amount, or none |
| Real-world efficiency | km/kWh, test conditions noted | km/l, test conditions noted |

| Annual distance | Your low, expected and high estimates | Your low, expected and high estimates |
| Routine service | Schedule and quoted costs | Schedule and quoted costs |

| Resale assumption | Low, middle and high case | Low, middle and high case |
| Trip fit | Charging stops and alternatives mapped | Refuelling stops mapped |
Final checks before purchase
- Obtain dated on-road quotations for comparable variants from more than one local seller.
- Drive both cars on your normal roads, including the traffic and gradients that affect efficiency.
- For the EV, inspect your parking bay and get written approval and an electrical installation quote.
- Map your three most common long routes, including charger status, opening hours, payment method and backup locations.
- Read the battery, vehicle and roadside-assistance warranty documents rather than relying on a sales summary.
- Calculate low, expected and high annual kilometres and energy prices; record the ownership period.
- Decide whether a higher monthly payment is acceptable if the lower purchase-price petrol car has higher running costs, and whether the reverse is true.
Bottom line: An electric car makes more sense in India when charging is dependable, your mileage is substantial enough to use its running-cost advantage, and your routes tolerate charging planning. A petrol car makes more sense when charging access or trip flexibility is the binding constraint, or when you need the lower up-front commitment. Make the decision with a matched, local, written calculation—not a national average, a dated running-cost illustration or a policy headline.
