For a qualifying new electric vehicle, Canada’s current federal point-of-sale program is the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP). Eligibility depends on the exact vehicle and transaction—not just the model name—including powertrain, country of manufacture, final transaction value, lease term and the date the dealer submits the assessment. Provincial programs are separate: Québec has vehicle and charging rebates, while current Manitoba and Yukon amounts must be confirmed with those jurisdictions before purchase.
How much is the federal EV rebate in Canada?
EVAP applies to eligible new light-duty vehicles bought or leased by individuals, organizations and businesses. Transactions became eligible on February 16, 2026. The program is scheduled to continue until March 31, 2031, or until its funding is exhausted, whichever comes first. Transport Canada states that the applicable amount is determined by the date the dealership or authorized seller submits the eligibility assessment, rather than simply by the order date or delivery date. See the official EVAP overview.

| 2026 | Up to $5,000 | Up to $2,500 |
| 2027 | Up to $4,000 | Up to $2,000 |
| 2028 | Up to $3,000 | Up to $1,500 |
| 2029 | Up to $3,000 | Up to $1,500 |
| 2030 | Up to $2,000 | Up to $1,000 |
| 2031 | Up to $2,000 | Up to $1,000 |
These are maximum scheduled amounts, not guaranteed payments. Funding can end early, and the dealer’s submission date controls which row applies. Ask the seller to show the EVAP assessment for the exact stock-keeping unit, transaction and submission date before you sign.

EVAP’s vehicle test has several parts. A car that appears on Transport Canada’s list is a useful starting point, but the list is not a substitute for the seller’s final assessment. The official vehicle list identifies model and trim information, fuel type and illustrative purchase or lease amounts. Vehicles absent from that list may still qualify if they satisfy the program rules.
#1 Best Overall
- Charge with Confidence: ChargePoint builds reliable, flexible EV charging stations for home, business, and fleets. Get 24/7 support and access to hundreds of thousands of North American charging locations.
- Charge Smart: With the user-friendly ChargePoint Mobile App, you can control your electric car charger, manage reminders, connect to smart home devices, find stations, get data and charging info, and access the latest features. Note: WiFi is needed for certain functionalities and troubleshooting steps if connectivity issues arise.
- Vast Network: Wherever you go, ChargePoint’s network includes 274k+ stations across North America and Europe and 565k+ roaming partner stations.
- Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
- Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.
- Vehicle class: it must be a light-duty vehicle under 8,500 pounds.
- Powertrain: the vehicle must be battery-electric, hydrogen fuel-cell or plug-in hybrid, with the applicable amount determined by that category.
- Origin: it must be made in Canada or in a country that has a free-trade agreement with Canada.
- Safety and road use: it must meet Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, be road-capable and have at least four functioning wheels.
- Registration status: it generally must be registered for the first time. A demonstrator with fewer than 10,000 kilometres may qualify.
- Transaction value: for a vehicle not made in Canada, the final transaction value must be $50,000 or less. Canadian-made EVs do not have that transaction-value cap under EVAP.
- Recipient limit: an individual may receive one EVAP incentive over the program. An organization or business generally may receive up to 10.
“Final transaction value” should be checked with the authorized seller for the exact deal, including the selected trim and any items that the program counts. Do not assume that a model name or a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price proves compliance.
How leases are treated
A qualifying EVAP lease must run for at least 12 months. A lease of 48 months or longer can receive the full applicable incentive; a shorter qualifying term is prorated. Transport Canada’s FAQ gives these examples: a 12-month lease receives one quarter of the full amount, and a 24-month lease receives one half. The dealer applies the incentive at the point of sale after submitting the assessment. Read the EVAP questions and answers for the program’s lease treatment and ask for the calculation in writing.

How to claim the federal incentive
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the model year, trim, powertrain, factory country and whether it is new or a qualifying demonstrator.
- Confirm the transaction value. Have the dealer confirm the final value used for EVAP and, when applicable, that it is no more than $50,000 for a non-Canadian-made vehicle.
- Choose the purchase or lease term. If leasing, verify that the term is at least 12 months and calculate any prorating for a term under 48 months.
- Ask the authorized seller to submit the assessment. The submission date determines the scheduled maximum, so obtain the date and result before finalizing the contract.
- Check the contract price. The incentive should appear as a point-of-sale reduction rather than a reimbursement you apply for later. Ensure the amount matches the approved assessment.
- Keep the records. Retain the purchase or lease agreement, vehicle identification information and the seller’s incentive documentation in case you need to resolve a later question.
iZEV is closed
The former federal Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program ended on March 31, 2025, after its funds were committed. It is not an alternative application route for a 2026 purchase. Transport Canada’s closure notice is available at the iZEV program page.
Québec rebates and charging assistance
Québec runs its own programs alongside EVAP. Québec rules, dates and eligible-model lists apply independently, so a buyer must satisfy both programs to receive both incentives.

New vehicles
For 2026, Québec’s Roulez vert program offers up to $2,000 for an eligible new fully electric or hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. Eligible plug-in hybrids receive a lower amount of either $1,000 or $500, depending on the vehicle. The applicable amount is tied to the program’s conditions and the registration date. Check the Québec new-vehicle rebate amounts page and its eligible-model list before ordering.
Used vehicles
An eligible used EV can receive $1,000 through Québec’s program. This is separate from EVAP, which covers eligible new vehicles. Québec’s used-vehicle rules include the vehicle’s age and model-list status, whether a prior rebate was paid, Québec registration, acquisition through a Québec dealer, and the buyer’s residency or qualifying organizational status. Review the complete used-EV conditions before treating a used car as rebate-eligible. The published used-vehicle amount is also subject to those conditions.

Home charging
Québec’s Écorecharge program is a separate charging incentive, not a requirement for EVAP. It provides $600 toward an eligible home charging station when the installation proof and other conditions are met. For an individual charging station in a multiple dwelling, assistance can reach $5,000, subject to eligible expenses, building and applicant requirements and a minimum qualifying spend. See the home charging assistance rules and the multiple-dwelling amount rules. A charger rebate cannot be treated as an extra federal vehicle rebate.

Yukon’s consolidated terms cover vehicle and charging rebates, but the available official document is a September 2025 PDF and does not establish a dependable complete amount comparison for a buyer in 2026. Check the latest territorial page and conditions before committing. The federal index is at Canada’s EV incentives page; the available Yukon terms are at the Yukon government PDF.
Compare rebate paths before choosing a vehicle
Rebate amounts are not directly comparable unless the underlying transaction qualifies. Use this checklist for each vehicle or deal:
| Question | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|
| Battery-electric, fuel-cell or plug-in hybrid? | EVAP maximums and Québec amounts differ by powertrain. |
| New, demonstrator or used? | EVAP is for eligible new vehicles, with a narrow demonstrator allowance; Québec has a separate used-EV route. |
| Exact model year and trim? | Eligibility lists and transaction values can differ within one model line. |
| Where was it made? | The free-trade origin rule applies, and the $50,000 EVAP cap applies to non-Canadian-made vehicles. |
| What is the final transaction value? | The amount used by the program may not equal the advertised starting price. |
| Purchase or lease term? | EVAP leases must last at least 12 months and shorter terms are prorated. |
| When will the seller submit the assessment? | The submission date sets the federal scheduled amount. |
| Where is the buyer registered or resident? | Provincial and territorial programs have their own residency, registration and dealer conditions. |
| Is the assistance for the car or the charger? | Charging programs, such as Québec’s Écorecharge, are separate from vehicle rebates. |
Common mistakes that cost buyers a rebate
- Using an old iZEV article: iZEV applications are closed; verify that a page describes EVAP and a 2026 transaction.
- Waiting until delivery: the federal amount follows the assessment submission date, which may differ from ordering or delivery.
- Checking only the vehicle name: trim, fuel type, origin and final transaction value can change eligibility.
- Assuming every lease gets the full amount: only a 48-month-or-longer qualifying lease receives the full applicable amount; shorter terms are prorated.
- Applying a used-car assumption to EVAP: federal EVAP is for eligible new vehicles, while Québec’s used-EV rebate has separate conditions.
- Counting a charger grant as a car rebate: charging assistance has its own invoice, installation and property rules.
- Ignoring funding limits: EVAP is scheduled through March 31, 2031, but may end sooner if funds run out.
Why these incentives matter in the Canadian market
Government of Canada figures cited in a February 2026 automotive-strategy announcement put EV market share at 15.4% in 2024, up from 3.1% in 2019. Those figures describe market context, not a promise that a rebate will make any particular vehicle cheaper overall. Taxes, financing, insurance, electricity, fuel, maintenance and charging installation are outside the incentive amounts listed here.
Transport Canada’s EVAP FAQ describes the previous iZEV program as having committed $2.9 billion over six years and supported more than 560,000 new EVs. That is historical iZEV context, not money available through current EVAP applications. The market-share figures appear in the 2026 automotive strategy announcement.
Final verification before signing
Ask the dealer or authorized seller to confirm, in writing, the exact model and trim, powertrain, manufacturing origin, final transaction value, purchase or lease term, EVAP assessment-submission date and point-of-sale amount. Then check the current federal and provincial pages for funding status and registration or residency rules. Because amounts, eligible trims and deadlines can change, treat every figure as “up to” the stated amount until the official assessment approves the specific transaction.
