Electric-Car Battery Warranty: What It Covers and How Long It Lasts (U.S. Guide)

Electric-car battery warranties commonly run eight to 10 years, but coverage depends on the exact model’s capacity threshold, mileage cap, test method, exclusions and transfer rules.

Most new electric cars sold in the United States include battery or EV-system coverage for eight to 10 years, with a mileage limit. Current manufacturer examples range from Tesla’s eight-year, model-specific limits to 100,000 miles, Hyundai’s 10 years/100,000 miles for its hybrid and electric battery, and Kia’s 10 years/100,000 miles for EV System coverage. Some warranties also promise a minimum retained capacity—often 70%—but the threshold, test method, covered parts, exclusions, remedy and transfer rules vary by vehicle.

Those figures are examples from U.S. manufacturer documents, not a universal legal standard. The warranty booklet and VIN-specific status for your exact model year control. A dashboard range estimate alone does not prove that a battery has suffered a warrantable capacity failure.

What an electric-car battery warranty normally covers

An EV warranty is a contract for a particular vehicle, market and model year. It may combine several protections under one heading or list the battery separately from other high-voltage components.

Defects in materials or workmanship

The basic promise is protection against a defect in manufacturing or assembly. If a covered battery component fails because it was defective, the manufacturer’s warranty may require diagnosis, repair or replacement according to its stated remedy. This is different from damage caused by a crash, misuse, unauthorized repair or another exclusion.

Excessive loss of usable capacity

Many manufacturers set a separate capacity standard. A warranty might promise that the pack will retain at least a stated percentage of its original capacity during the coverage period. The percentage and the way it is measured are specific to the manufacturer and vehicle. A claim generally requires the pack to fail the maker’s prescribed test, not merely to show a lower number on the instrument panel.

Other high-voltage EV components

Some contracts cover more than the battery pack. Kia’s U.S. warranty page, for example, identifies the electric motor, high-voltage battery, electric power control unit and on-board charger as components of its EV System Warranty: Kia Warranty. That list is an example of Kia’s definition, not a universal list for every electric car.

How long coverage lasts: current U.S. examples

The table shows the terms published in the cited U.S. manufacturer materials. “Whichever comes first” applies when a document gives both a time and mileage limit; read the individual booklet for the exact wording and model-year exceptions.

Manufacturer and source Published time limit Mileage limit Capacity language What the document covers
Tesla Eight years Model-dependent: examples include 100,000, 120,000 and 150,000 miles At least 70% retained capacity for the listed models Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty; exact term depends on model
Hyundai USA 10 years 100,000 miles The warranty summary lists hybrid/electric battery coverage; consult the Owner’s Handbook for capacity details Hybrid and electric battery coverage in the warranty summary
Kia USA 10 years 100,000 miles 70% of original capacity during that period EV System Warranty, including named high-voltage and drive-system components
Ford owner-manual material Eight years 160,000 km (99,419.4 miles), whichever comes first, in the cited material Separate capacity-coverage language; threshold depends on the applicable booklet Battery warranty terms described in the vehicle’s owner-manual content

Tesla’s current U.S. support page lists the model-specific durations and mileage caps at Tesla Vehicle Warranty. Its U.S. New Vehicle Limited Warranty states that the listed models have “minimum 70% retention of Battery capacity over the warranty period”; the model’s own term and exclusions still apply (Tesla New Vehicle Limited Warranty PDF).

Hyundai’s warranty summary gives the 10-year/100,000-mile battery figure and directs owners to the Owner’s Handbook for the detailed conditions (Hyundai Warranty Coverage). Kia publishes its 10-year/100,000-mile EV System term and 70% capacity floor on its U.S. warranty page (Kia Warranty). The Ford example comes from owner-manual warranty content, so confirm the booklet supplied with the specific vehicle (Ford owner-manual warranty content).

Why a range drop is not automatically a warranty failure

Driving range is affected by temperature, speed, terrain, wind, tire pressure, heating or air-conditioning use, payload, driving style and the car’s estimate algorithm. Consequently, the number shown after a full charge is not a direct laboratory measurement of the energy the pack can store.

Tesla expressly describes range estimates as an imperfect measure of battery capacity and assigns the measurement method to Tesla under its warranty terms. Other manufacturers can use their own procedures. If you believe capacity has fallen below the stated floor, ask an authorized service department to perform the manufacturer’s official capacity test and record the result. Do not treat a third-party app reading or a single trip’s range as conclusive unless the warranty booklet accepts that method.

Six details to read in your exact warranty booklet

  1. Warranty start date. Identify whether the clock begins at original retail delivery, first use, registration or another event defined by the manufacturer. A used-car purchase normally does not restart the new-vehicle term.
  2. Both limits. Write down the years and miles (or kilometres), and determine which limit ends coverage first. Check whether different components have different limits.
  3. Covered components. Confirm whether the promise applies only to the high-voltage battery or also to the motor, inverter or electric power control unit, on-board charger, cooling hardware and other named parts.
  4. Capacity threshold and test. Find the minimum retained capacity, if one is stated, and the manufacturer’s required measurement procedure. Note whether the threshold applies throughout the term or only for a specified period.
  5. Remedy. Read whether the manufacturer may repair modules, replace part of the pack, install a reconditioned pack or provide another remedy. A qualifying claim does not automatically mean a brand-new battery with the original production date.
  6. Exclusions and conditions. Look for accident damage, flooding, tampering, improper storage, modifications, missed maintenance or unauthorized servicing. Tesla’s U.S. PDF, for example, lists collision or accident damage and certain unauthorized battery servicing among its exclusions. Those are Tesla terms, not a universal exclusion list.

What happens when capacity falls below the stated threshold?

The process normally starts with a complaint and a manufacturer-approved diagnosis. Keep charging and service records, note the odometer and warranty start date, and describe the conditions under which you observed the change. The service center can then apply the test specified by the warranty.

If the test confirms a covered failure

The written remedy controls. Depending on the contract and the diagnosed fault, the manufacturer may repair a module, replace the pack or another covered component, or take another action allowed by the warranty. Ask for the diagnosis, the measured capacity, the threshold used and the proposed remedy in writing.

If the test does not confirm a failure

Ask which result fell within specification and whether another condition—such as temperature, software calibration or an unrelated vehicle fault—affected the symptom. Review the appeal or customer-assistance process in the warranty booklet. A second dealer opinion can clarify a disputed diagnosis, but it cannot change the contractual threshold.

Does the warranty cover normal battery degradation?

Normal aging is expected in a lithium-ion battery, so a small loss of capacity is usually not a defect by itself. A capacity warranty addresses degradation only when it crosses the manufacturer’s stated floor and meets the required test. If a warranty does not state a capacity guarantee, it may still cover a defective cell, module or battery-control component, but the contract’s defect language and exclusions determine eligibility.

Does an EV battery warranty transfer to a used-car buyer?

Do not assume that every battery warranty transfers in the same way. Some new-vehicle warranties are vehicle-based; others impose ownership, registration or servicing conditions, and certain benefits may differ for a subsequent owner. The answer can also vary by country and model year.

Before buying a used EV, obtain the VIN and ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer to confirm:

  • the original in-service or delivery date;
  • the exact battery and EV-system terms for that VIN;
  • remaining time and mileage;
  • whether the capacity guarantee transfers;
  • any prior battery replacement and its new warranty period; and
  • open recalls, recorded exclusions or an authorization requirement for future claims.

Get the confirmation in writing or retain the official case number. A seller’s statement that the car has an “ eight-year battery warranty” is not enough to establish remaining coverage.

How to verify coverage before making a claim

  1. Locate the correct documents. Use the warranty booklet supplied with the car, the manufacturer’s owner portal and the VIN-specific warranty record. A generic web summary may describe a different model year or market.
  2. Separate battery and EV-system sections. Record the limits for the high-voltage battery, drive unit, charger and power electronics individually.
  3. Check the odometer and dates. Compare both with the start date and mileage cap. Photograph the odometer and keep purchase and service paperwork.
  4. Describe the symptom precisely. State whether the concern is a fault message, charging failure, reduced power, abnormal energy use or suspected capacity loss. Include temperatures, charging level and repeatable conditions when relevant.
  5. Request the prescribed test. Ask the authorized service center to use the warranty’s capacity or diagnostic procedure and to provide the result.
  6. Review the written decision. If coverage is denied, request the contractual exclusion or test result relied upon, then follow the manufacturer’s escalation path.

Comparison point Question to ask
Start date When does the term begin, and does a replacement pack receive a new term?
Duration and mileage What are both limits, and which ends coverage first?
Scope Is coverage limited to the battery pack or does it include the motor, charger and power electronics?
Capacity floor Is a minimum percentage stated, and does it apply for the full term?
Measurement Who performs the test, under what conditions and using what procedure?
Remedy and exclusions Can the manufacturer repair modules or install a reconditioned pack, and what damage or servicing voids coverage?
Transfer Does protection follow the vehicle, and are there owner, market or documentation conditions?

Use the actual booklets for the vehicles you are considering. Brand-level advertising cannot answer a VIN-specific question about a used car, a replacement battery or a regional edition.

Practical questions owners often ask

Is an eight-year warranty shorter than a 10-year warranty in every meaningful way?

No. Years are only one axis. A shorter term with a higher mileage cap, broader component list or clearer capacity test may suit one driver better than a longer term with narrower scope. Compare the complete conditions rather than the headline duration.

Can I claim because my car’s estimated range is 15% lower?

Not on that observation alone. The manufacturer must apply the capacity method and threshold in the applicable warranty. Range estimates include factors unrelated to stored energy.

Will a battery replacement be a new, original pack?

Not necessarily. The remedy language may permit module repair, a replacement pack or a reconditioned component. Ask the service center what will be installed and what warranty applies to that repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a battery warranty the same as roadside assistance or a general vehicle warranty?

No. Roadside assistance, corrosion coverage, bumper-to-bumper protection and high-voltage battery coverage are separate benefits with different terms. Use the section that matches the failure.

Bottom line

For U.S. EVs, expect a manufacturer-specific battery or EV-system warranty measured in years and miles, commonly eight years or 10 years/100,000 miles in the examples above. Capacity protection may require retention of at least 70%, but only the exact vehicle warranty defines the threshold, test, exclusions, remedy and transfer rules. Check the booklet and VIN record before buying a used EV or assuming that a range change qualifies for a free battery repair.
