Yes—an electric vehicle can use a limited-slip differential, and Eaton describes EV Truetrac as a mechanical, helical-gear option designed for that job. It allows axle wheels to turn at different speeds while automatically biasing torque toward the wheel with better traction, without electronic connections or software. Eaton positions it for compact EV packaging, including electric SUVs and pickups; its public product information does not identify a production-vehicle fitment.
Why an electric vehicle still needs a differential
A differential lets the left and right wheels on an axle rotate at different speeds, which is necessary when a vehicle turns. An open differential provides that speed difference, but a limited-slip design can also bias torque toward the wheel that has more traction. The basic need does not disappear when an internal-combustion engine is replaced by electric motors.
Eaton says an EV differential faces a different duty cycle: electric drivetrains can deliver torque nearly instantaneously, and regenerative braking also places torque loads on drivetrain components. Those conditions matter when engineers specify axle capacity, lubrication, packaging and control strategy. Eaton contrasts a mechanically responsive limited-slip design with electronically controlled systems that can use algorithms to anticipate loads or conditions; that is Eaton’s description, not a neutral comparative test.
Eaton also states that more than 500,000 EVs have been manufactured using its differentials. The company page does not specify the time period or an independent verification method for that figure. Eaton’s EV limited-slip article discusses the EV duty-cycle distinction.

How Eaton EV Truetrac works
EV Truetrac is Eaton’s helical-gear limited-slip differential for electric vehicles. Its gears provide automatic torque biasing: when traction differs across the axle, the mechanism can direct more torque toward the wheel with better grip while still allowing the wheels to rotate at different speeds. Eaton says this function does not require electronic connections or software.
Eaton lists a tunable bias ratio of 1.5–3 for EV Truetrac. The figure belongs to the EV product, not to every Truetrac-branded differential. Eaton’s EV Truetrac product page also describes low-viscosity oil for high instantaneous torque loads and compact packaging for electric SUVs and pickup trucks.

How EV Truetrac differs from Eaton’s other differential approaches
Eaton’s e-mobility materials describe more than one way to manage axle traction. The choice depends on whether a vehicle needs continuous mechanical biasing, electronically managed limited slip or a locking function, as well as available space, duty cycle and software integration.
| Approach | Control and behavior | Integration considerations |
|---|---|---|
| EV Truetrac | Mechanical helical-gear limited slip; automatic torque biasing. Eaton states a tunable bias ratio of 1.5–3. | Eaton says torque biasing needs no electronic connections or software. Packaging, axle capacity and lubrication still need to suit the vehicle. |
| IntelliTrac | Electronically controlled limited-slip design. | Requires appropriate control-system integration; the brochure does not provide a universal vehicle fitment or neutral performance comparison. |
| InfiniTrac | Electronically controlled, hydraulically actuated limited-slip design. | Requires integration for its electronic and hydraulic actuation; application suitability depends on the vehicle design. |
| EV ELocker | Selectable, electronically controlled locking design. | Consider whether a full locking function is needed and how it will integrate with vehicle controls. |
The product categories are described in Eaton’s eMobility Guide Brochure. The cited materials do not establish that one approach is universally best or provide independent comparative testing.

EV Truetrac is not the same as an aftermarket Detroit Truetrac
Detroit Truetrac is Eaton’s aftermarket helical-gear limited-slip product, with vehicle-specific application information. Its US product page cites up to 3.5 times more torque to the high-traction wheel. That statement applies to Detroit Truetrac; it is not the EV Truetrac bias-ratio specification. A shared helical-gear principle does not establish that the products are interchangeable or that Detroit Truetrac fits an electric vehicle.
Before identifying a differential for a vehicle, confirm the axle configuration, torque capacity, gear ratio, lubrication specification and Eaton’s approval for the platform. Eaton’s public EV Truetrac description identifies a target market of electric SUVs and pickups but does not name a production vehicle or provide consumer retrofit instructions. The Detroit Truetrac product page is for that separate aftermarket product.

What the public product information does—and does not—establish
Eaton describes EV Truetrac’s concept, claimed features and intended vehicle category. The reviewed product information does not establish a named EV application, consumer installation path, product price, warranty, measured efficiency gain or independent comparative result. Those details should not be inferred from the product name or from Detroit Truetrac application listings.
