E85 usually delivers fewer miles per gallon than regular pump gasoline, but it can still be cheaper to drive when its lower price more than offsets the lost fuel economy. E85 is intended for factory-built flexible-fuel vehicles (FFVs); a gasoline-only vehicle should not use it. To make a sound choice, verify that your vehicle is an FFV, use its fuel-specific MPG, and compare local prices with a cost-per-mile calculation rather than comparing prices per gallon alone.

What E85 and regular gasoline actually are

E85 is not a single, fixed formula. The U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center (DOE AFDC) defines it as a gasoline blend containing 51% to 83% ethanol, with the exact proportion varying by geography and season. A pump marked E85 therefore can contain substantially different ethanol content at different times of year or in different regions.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

“Regular gas” at a U.S. station is also often a blend rather than pure gasoline. Much of the retail supply is E10, gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol. Ethanol-free gasoline is available in some markets, but it should not be assumed when comparing fuels.

Why the blend matters

Ethanol contains less energy per gallon than gasoline. DOE AFDC says E85 containing 83% ethanol has about 27% less energy per gallon than gasoline and that the fuel-economy effect becomes smaller as ethanol content falls. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates ethanol has about 33% less energy per gallon than pure gasoline and that using E10 instead of ethanol-free gasoline may reduce fuel economy by about 3%.

Those figures describe different comparisons. The EIA’s approximately 3% figure is for E10 versus ethanol-free gasoline; it is not an E85 estimate. Neither energy percentage should be converted directly into a guaranteed MPG loss for every FFV.

Is E85 always 85% ethanol?

No. The name identifies a fuel category, not a guaranteed laboratory percentage. DOE’s 51%–83% range reflects allowed seasonal and geographic variation. A blend near 51% ethanol will generally have a smaller energy and MPG effect than one near the 83% upper end. This is why two E85 purchases can produce somewhat different results even when both pumps carry the same label.

How much fuel economy you should expect

FFVs use engine controls and fuel-system components designed to operate on gasoline, E85, and intermediate blends. Because E85 has less energy per gallon, the engine generally consumes more gallons to travel the same distance. The actual change depends on ethanol content, vehicle calibration, engine design, driving conditions, weather, and whether you are comparing city or highway operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Published ranges are not universal ratings

A DOE AFDC technical report discussed E85 vehicles with fuel-economy decreases of 15% to 27%. That is a study-level range, not a promise for every current FFV. A vehicle receiving a lower-ethanol E85 blend may show a smaller difference than one using a blend near the 83% maximum.

DOE’s practical guidance is that, other than lower MPG, motorists driving FFVs will see little difference when using E85 versus gasoline. The qualification is important: lower MPG is expected, but there is no single penalty that applies to every vehicle, route, or pump blend.

Use fuel-specific figures for your vehicle

For a meaningful comparison, use the same vehicle’s EPA or manufacturer-listed fuel economy for each fuel. Match the figures to your driving pattern: city MPG for mostly urban driving, highway MPG for sustained highway travel, or a weighted estimate if your use is mixed. Do not substitute an E85 rating from a different model, engine, or model year.

If your vehicle has no separate E85 rating, do not manufacture one by subtracting a fixed percentage. Start with the best documented figure available, then refine it with several real fill-ups under similar conditions. Keep gasoline and E85 records separate and note the season, route, load, and driving pattern so a winter-city result is not compared directly with a summer-highway result.

Calculate cost per mile instead of relying on the pump price

The useful question is not “Which gallon is cheaper?” but “How much does each mile cost in this vehicle?” Divide the local price per gallon by the vehicle’s MPG on that fuel.

  • Gasoline cost per mile = local gasoline price per gallon ÷ gasoline MPG
  • E85 cost per mile = local E85 price per gallon ÷ E85 MPG

Use prices from the same station and time when possible. If you are planning a trip, use prices along the route rather than a national average.

Find the E85 break-even price

You can calculate the highest E85 price that would match gasoline’s cost per mile:

Break-even E85 price = gasoline price per gallon × (E85 MPG ÷ gasoline MPG)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the posted E85 price is below that break-even figure, E85 costs less per mile under the chosen MPG assumptions. If it is above the figure, gasoline costs less per mile.

The formula can also be read as a required discount. In the 20-MPG gasoline and 14-MPG E85 example, E85 must cost no more than 70% of the gasoline price to break even, because 14 divided by 20 equals 0.70. At a higher E85 MPG, the allowable E85 price rises; at a lower E85 MPG, it falls. Recalculate whenever the station price, blend, or driving pattern changes.

Worked example using DOE methodology inputs

DOE AFDC’s methodology includes an example FFV rated at 20 MPG on gasoline and 14 MPG on E85 in one operating condition. These are example inputs, not a typical rating to assume for another vehicle. Applying the calculation with the DOE AFDC January 2026 national regional-average prices—$2.89 per gallon for gasoline and $2.36 per gallon for E85—produces:

Calculation Gasoline E85
Price per gallon $2.89 $2.36
Fuel economy used 20 MPG 14 MPG
Cost per mile $2.89 ÷ 20 = $0.1445 $2.36 ÷ 14 = $0.1686

Under those assumptions, E85 costs about 16.9 cents per mile versus 14.5 cents for gasoline, despite a 53-cent-per-gallon E85 discount. The break-even E85 price is $2.89 × (14 ÷ 20), or about $2.02 per gallon. At $2.36, E85 is above that threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same report also lists the example vehicle at 28 MPG on gasoline and 20 MPG on E85 in another condition. Using those figures with the same dated prices gives approximately 10.3 cents per mile for gasoline and 11.8 cents for E85. The result changes with the vehicle’s fuel economy, so the example cannot establish a universal winner.

What the January 2026 price report does—and does not—tell you

DOE AFDC’s January 2026 alternative-fuel price report lists national average prices of $2.36 per gallon for E85 and $2.89 for gasoline. It reports an E85 discount of $0.41 per gallon in the Midwest and $0.95 per gallon on the West Coast. These are historical regional averages, not live station quotes, and they do not include your vehicle’s MPG, route, driving style, or station availability.

The report’s E85 energy-content calculation uses a basis of 70% ethanol and 30% gasoline. That assumption illustrates why the blend behind the label matters: actual E85 composition can differ, changing the expected MPG difference.

Confirm compatibility before you pump E85

E85 is approved for flexible-fuel vehicles specifically engineered for it. DOE AFDC and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency state that E85 is not approved for gasoline-only models. Putting E85 in a non-FFV can cause drivability problems, poor running, warning lights, or component and emissions-system damage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Three reliable ways to identify an FFV

  1. Read the owner’s manual. Look for an approved-fuels section that explicitly lists E85 or flexible-fuel operation.
  2. Inspect the vehicle and fuel door. An E85 or “flex fuel” label, badge, or yellow fuel cap may identify an FFV where fitted. Equipment and labeling vary by model year, so the absence of a badge is not conclusive.
  3. Use an official vehicle lookup. Check the manufacturer’s documentation or a government vehicle-information resource using the exact model year, engine, body style, and trim.

Do not infer compatibility from appearance. FFVs can look identical to gasoline-only versions of the same model, and a similar trim or engine designation does not prove that a particular vehicle is flex-fuel capable.

If you accidentally use E85 in a gasoline-only vehicle

Do not continue driving simply because the engine still runs. Stop in a safe place and consult the owner’s manual, manufacturer, roadside assistance provider, or a qualified repair facility for model-specific instructions. The appropriate response depends on how much fuel was added and whether the vehicle has been operated; avoid guessing or repeatedly diluting the tank without professional guidance.

How to choose between E85 and gasoline on a real trip

  1. Verify FFV status. If the vehicle is not explicitly approved for E85, use gasoline.
  2. Record fuel-specific MPG. Start with EPA or manufacturer figures, then improve the estimate with your own controlled records if you regularly use both fuels. Keep city and highway use separate.
  3. Check current prices. Compare the actual E85 and gasoline prices at stations you can reach. The DOE AFDC station locator can help identify public E85 locations, but station status and prices can change.
  4. Compute cost per mile. Divide each price by the corresponding MPG. For a mixed route, use a weighted MPG estimate or calculate separate city and highway segments.
  5. Check the route for availability. An attractive E85 price is irrelevant if the next compatible station is too far away for your remaining range. DOE reports more than 4,200 public E85 stations in 44 states, but coverage is regional.
  6. Choose the lower cost that fits your route. Include the time and distance required to detour for E85. A small per-mile saving can disappear if you make a special trip to find it.

How to build a reliable personal MPG comparison

For a useful log, record the odometer or trip miles and gallons added at each fill-up, then calculate miles divided by gallons. Use several fill-ups rather than one tank, because a partial fill, pump shutoff difference, or unusual traffic day can distort a single result. Label every entry as gasoline or E85 and retain the station location and date.

Compare periods with similar conditions when possible. Separate city-heavy and highway-heavy driving, and note major changes such as cold weather, towing, heavy cargo, tire-pressure changes, or long idling. The goal is not to create a laboratory rating; it is to estimate how that particular FFV performs on the fuel and routes you actually use. Recheck the estimate if you move to a different region or if seasonal E85 composition changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why your real-world MPG may differ from the label

EPA ratings are standardized comparisons, not guarantees for an individual journey. Cold weather, tire pressure, payload, speed, traffic, idling, hills, roof racks, towing, and air-conditioning use can change fuel consumption on either fuel. Comparing E85 and gasoline on different routes or in different seasons can obscure the fuel effect.

Blend variation adds another source of uncertainty. E85 can contain 51% to 83% ethanol, and the lower-ethanol end generally reduces the MPG penalty. A station’s posted label tells you the allowed fuel category, not necessarily the exact ethanol percentage in that delivery.

Common mistakes that produce bad comparisons

Comparing gallons instead of miles

A lower E85 price per gallon can look favorable even when the vehicle burns enough additional fuel to make each mile more expensive. Always divide by the MPG for that fuel.

Applying the E10 penalty to E85

The EIA’s approximately 3% potential decrease refers to E10 versus ethanol-free gasoline. It is not a prediction for E85. E85 has a much higher and variable ethanol content, so use vehicle-specific E85 figures instead.

Using a fixed 27% or 15% penalty

The approximately 27% energy difference cited for an 83% ethanol blend and the 15%–27% decrease reported in a DOE technical study provide context, not a universal adjustment. A different blend, engine, driving cycle, or model year can produce a different result.

Treating a national average as your local price

The January 2026 DOE figures are dated regional averages. They are useful for an illustration but cannot replace a current quote from the station you intend to use.

Assuming every similarly named vehicle is flex-fuel

FFV and gasoline-only versions can share the same exterior and trim names. Confirm the exact vehicle identification before fueling.

What E85 means for ownership decisions

For an FFV, E85 is an additional fuel option, not a requirement. Use it when its local price is below your calculated break-even price and a convenient station is available. Use gasoline when the cost per mile is lower, E85 is unavailable, or the route makes an E85 detour impractical.

Drivers who want a more reliable personal comparison can track odometer miles and gallons for several fill-ups on each fuel while keeping tire pressures, routes, and driving conditions as consistent as possible. Treat the result as an estimate for that vehicle and season, not a permanent fuel rating.

Bottom line

E85 generally lowers MPG because ethanol contains less energy per gallon, but the cheaper gallon is not automatically the cheaper mile. Verify that your vehicle is a factory-built FFV, use its actual gasoline and E85 MPG, check current local prices, and apply the cost-per-mile and break-even formulas. With those four checks, you can decide rationally each time instead of relying on a universal E85 discount or MPG penalty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will E85 save me money every time it is cheaper per gallon?

No. E85 usually produces lower MPG, so compare price per gallon divided by fuel-specific MPG. E85 saves money only when its price is below the break-even level for your vehicle and route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much lower is E85 MPG than gasoline?

There is no universal percentage. A DOE technical report discussed decreases of 15% to 27% in the E85 vehicles it examined, while actual results vary with the 51%–83% ethanol blend, vehicle, driving cycle, weather, and traffic.

Can I put E85 in any car that normally uses regular gas?

No. E85 is approved for factory-built flexible-fuel vehicles. Check the owner’s manual, fuel-door labeling, or an official lookup for the exact model year, engine, body style, and trim. Do not rely on appearance alone.

Why does the EIA’s 3% figure not apply to E85?

That estimate describes E10 compared with ethanol-free gasoline. E85 contains far more ethanol and can vary from 51% to 83%, so its MPG effect must be estimated with E85-specific vehicle information.

Where can I find E85 on a trip?

Use the DOE AFDC station locator and verify current station status, hours, and price. DOE reports more than 4,200 public E85 stations in 44 states, but availability is regional and can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I accidentally fuel a gasoline-only car with E85?

Stop safely and consult the owner’s manual, manufacturer, roadside assistance, or a qualified repair facility. The correct response depends on the amount added and whether the vehicle was driven, so do not guess or repeatedly dilute the tank without guidance.

How can I get a better MPG number for my own FFV?

Record miles and gallons for several fill-ups on each fuel, identify city or highway use, and keep notes on date, station, weather, load, and route. Compare similar conditions and treat the result as a vehicle- and season-specific estimate.

The Bottom Line

E85 is worth considering only in a confirmed FFV and only after comparing fuel-specific cost per mile. Check the current local prices, calculate the break-even E85 price, and account for station availability and route convenience.
