E85 vs Petrol: How a ₹20-Per-Litre Discount Can Still Cost More per Kilometre

A ₹20-per-litre E85 discount does not guarantee cheaper driving. Compare fuel prices with kilometres per litre, check the break-even price and confirm your vehicle is certified for E85.

Yes, E85 can cost more to drive with even when it is ₹20 per litre cheaper than petrol. The reason is that fuel economy changes with the fuel. The meaningful comparison is rupees per kilometre, not rupees per litre: divide each fuel’s price by the kilometres your compatible vehicle travels on that fuel.

The ₹20 gap in the headline is not a verified current market price. No location, date, matching petrol price or vehicle-specific E85 economy has been established, so the calculation below treats it as a clearly labelled scenario. Your result depends on the prices at your station and your vehicle’s measured economy.

The only comparison that answers the question: cost per kilometre

Let P be the petrol price in rupees per litre and M be petrol economy in kilometres per litre. If E85 is exactly ₹20 cheaper in the scenario, its price is P − ₹20. Let N be the vehicle’s E85 economy.

Fuel Price per litre Economy Running cost
Petrol P M km/L P ÷ M rupees/km
E85 P − ₹20 N km/L (P − ₹20) ÷ N rupees/km

E85 is cheaper to use only when (P − ₹20) ÷ N < P ÷ M. If the E85 result is higher, the discount has not compensated for the additional litres needed to cover the same distance.

A worked ₹20 example (illustrative, not a fuel-economy test)

The following numbers show how the arithmetic works; they are not measured results for an Indian car or station. Assume petrol costs ₹100/L, the vehicle returns 20 km/L on petrol, and E85 costs ₹80/L because of the ₹20 difference. If the same vehicle returns 15 km/L on E85, the comparison is:

Calculation Petrol E85
Price ₹100/L ₹80/L
Economy 20 km/L 15 km/L
Cost per kilometre ₹100 ÷ 20 = ₹5.00 ₹80 ÷ 15 = ₹5.33
Cost for 100 km ₹500 about ₹533.33

Although the E85 pump price is 20% lower in this illustration, its economy is 25% lower. The driver therefore spends about 33 paise more per kilometre, or roughly ₹33.33 more over 100 km. Change the economy or either pump price and the conclusion changes with it.

E85 economy Break-even E85 price Meaning
17 km/L ₹85/L E85 must be below ₹85/L to save money per kilometre.
15 km/L ₹75/L At ₹80/L, E85 is above break-even and costs more.
14 km/L ₹70/L A ₹20 discount from ₹100/L would still be insufficient.

This method is more useful than applying a universal “E85 should be X% cheaper” rule. The required discount is driven by the economy ratio N ÷ M. If E85 economy is 75% of petrol economy, its price must also be below 75% of the petrol price for a per-kilometre saving.

Why E85 usually changes fuel economy

Ethanol contains less energy per unit of volume than gasoline. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says, “The energy content of ethanol is about 33% less than pure gasoline” (FAQ updated April 1, 2024). That is a fuel-energy comparison, not a promise that every vehicle will lose exactly 33% of its kilometres per litre.

The actual result depends on the blend, the engine and the conditions under which economy is measured. A vehicle may use a different volume of fuel to produce the same power, and the dashboard estimate, laboratory rating and an individual trip can all differ. Use economy recorded on the same vehicle, route type and driving pattern whenever possible.

E85 is a range in some markets

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center describes E85 as containing 51% to 83% ethanol, with the range varying by geography and season. Consequently, a U.S. E85 figure is not automatically a specification for fuel sold in India.

For India, a Press Information Bureau release dated July 23, 2026 describes E85 as 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. It states: “However, E85 fuel (containing 85% ethanol and 15% petrol) has been introduced exclusively for use in Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) designed and certified for such fuel (E85) and does not constitute an increase in the nationwide base ethanol blending level of petrol.” Always identify the market and the blend definition when comparing prices or economy.

Do not put E85 in an unapproved petrol vehicle

E85 is not simply a cheaper substitute for every petrol car. The Indian government’s statement limits the fuel to flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) designed and certified for E85. NITI Aayog’s ethanol roadmap says the manufacturer defines the compatible blend level.

Before calculating savings, verify all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The owner’s manual explicitly lists E85 or the relevant ethanol blend.
  • The fuel flap, filler label or vehicle documentation identifies the car as a flex-fuel vehicle.
  • The manufacturer confirms compatibility for your model, engine and market.
  • The fuel station’s product label identifies the blend being sold.

If the manual specifies a lower blend or does not mention E85, do not treat the car as compatible. A low price cannot offset damage, drivability problems, warranty disputes or a stranded vehicle. Compatibility is a prerequisite to the cost calculation, not a factor to average into it.

How to calculate your own rupees-per-kilometre result

  1. Record both prices. Write down the petrol and E85 prices at the same location and on the same date. Do not assume the ₹20 difference exists; calculate the actual difference shown on the dispensers.
  2. Use comparable economy figures. Obtain the manufacturer’s separate figures for each approved fuel, or measure them yourself over multiple refills. Keep the vehicle, tyre condition, load, route mix and driving style as consistent as practical.
  3. Convert each fuel to cost per kilometre. Divide rupees per litre by kilometres per litre. For a trip-cost estimate, multiply that result by the planned distance.
  4. Check the break-even price. Multiply petrol price by E85 economy and divide by petrol economy. An E85 pump price below that number is cheaper per kilometre under those assumptions.
  5. Recalculate when conditions change. A different blend definition, season, route, traffic pattern or vehicle load can change kilometres per litre and therefore the answer.

For a cleaner personal measurement, record litres added and kilometres driven between full tanks rather than relying only on a dashboard estimate. Compare several fuel cycles; one short trip can be distorted by traffic or an unusual load. Report the result as your observed cost under those conditions, not as a universal property of E85.

What the 21% U.S. estimate does—and does not—prove

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s November 2022 draft regulatory analysis modelled average U.S. E85 at 74% ethanol and estimated about 21% less volumetric energy than E10. In that model, E85 would need to be about 21% cheaper than E10 to reach energy-equivalent pricing.

That is a U.S. modelled average, not an Indian pump-price observation, a current quotation or a test of a particular Indian FFV. It is useful for understanding why a litre-price discount may need to be substantial, but it cannot replace the vehicle-specific calculation above.

Common mistakes that produce the wrong answer

Comparing litres instead of distance

“₹20 cheaper” describes a litre. A driver pays for the litres required to travel a distance. If E85 economy falls enough, more litres erase the apparent saving.

Assuming a fixed mileage penalty

The 33% EIA figure applies to ethanol’s energy content relative to pure gasoline; it is not a guaranteed E85 mileage reduction. The DOE’s 51%–83% E85 range also shows why blend composition matters.

Using a petrol-only car in the calculation

A mathematical result does not make an unapproved vehicle safe to operate on E85. Confirm certification first.

Quoting the ₹20 gap without a location and date

Fuel prices vary by station and time, and the reviewed official material does not verify the headline’s difference. State the station, date, fuel definitions and vehicle whenever presenting a real-world claim.

Mixing incompatible test results

Comparing one vehicle’s petrol economy with another vehicle’s E85 economy says nothing about fuel savings. Use the same compatible vehicle and comparable conditions.

What can be concluded today

E85 is cheaper to use only when its lower price per litre outweighs the kilometres-per-litre penalty in the same approved vehicle. The ₹20 figure is a scenario, not an established current Indian market fact. The reliable decision rule is simple: measure or obtain P, M, the actual E85 price and N, then compare P ÷ M with E85 price ÷ N. If the E85 result is lower, it saves money per kilometre; if it is higher, the cheaper litre still costs more to drive with.
