Before every e-bike ride, spend a few minutes on a stationary check of the tyres, brakes, wheels, controls, lights, chain and battery. Then make a short, cautious test ride in a safe area. If a safety-critical part is damaged, loose or not working, do not ride until it has been repaired or assessed. This routine follows government guidance from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the NSW Government, North Dakota Vision Zero and the UK Highway Code; your bicycle manual and local traffic law take precedence.
The complete before-every-ride checklist
Use this sequence with the e-bike turned off and stationary. A visual check can reveal obvious problems, but it cannot diagnose hidden battery, brake or frame faults. Stop if anything looks unsafe.

| Area | What to check | Do not ride when |
|---|---|---|
| Tyres | Both tyres hold air, have no cuts, nicks, bulges or embedded objects, and retain usable tread. Check the pressure range printed on each tyre. | A tyre is visibly damaged, badly worn or unable to hold pressure. |
| Brakes | Squeeze each lever, confirm it engages the brake and inspect pads, cables and mounts for obvious wear, damage or looseness. | Braking is weak, a component is damaged or the brake rubs severely. |
| Wheels | Confirm each wheel is securely attached, turns freely and has no obvious obstruction. | A wheel is loose, obstructed or cannot rotate normally. |
| Controls and frame | Look over the handlebars, throttle, cables, controls and frame for cracks, damage or looseness. | A structural part or control is damaged or moves unexpectedly. |
| Lights and reflectors | Clean and securely attached lights and reflectors; switch on the equipment needed for the conditions. | A required light is missing, loose or not working. |
| Chain and drivetrain | The chain is present, reasonably clean, lubricated and moves freely through the drivetrain. | The chain is damaged, seized or has come off. |
| Battery | Check for visible damage or fault indications and confirm enough charge for the planned trip. | The battery is damaged, shows a fault or cannot safely provide the needed range. |
NHTSA describes this kind of quick inspection as an “A-B-C check” followed by a test ride. The letters are commonly used for air, brakes and cranks, but an e-bike check should also cover its electrical controls, battery, lights and frame.

Look before you touch
Walk around the bike and examine the entire surface of each tyre. Look for cuts, nicks, bulges, exposed casing, embedded glass or other objects, and tread that is visibly worn away. A bulge can indicate internal damage even when the tyre still appears inflated. Remove only loose debris that can be taken out safely; do not pull out an object that may be sealing a puncture and then continue riding without checking the tyre.

Use the marked pressure range
Tyre pressure is not a universal e-bike number. Read the recommended range moulded or printed on the tyre sidewall, and follow any different pressure or setup instructions in the bicycle maker’s manual. Check pressure with a suitable gauge rather than judging by thumb pressure. An underinflated tyre can feel unstable and may damage the rim; an overinflated tyre can reduce grip and make the ride harsh. The NHTSA and NSW Government both include pressure and tyre condition in their pre-ride checks.
Check both wheels every time
Do not inspect only the rear tyre because it carries the motor or appears larger. A front-wheel problem can affect steering immediately. Confirm that valve caps are present when supplied, the valve is not bent, and neither tyre is losing air while you prepare to leave.
2. Test the brakes for real stopping power
Stationary lever test
Squeeze the left and right brake levers separately. Each lever should move the corresponding brake decisively without pulling all the way to the handlebar. Check that the lever, cable or hydraulic hose is not loose, cut or leaking, and look for brake pads that are visibly worn, contaminated or displaced. Your model may use different controls or a combined braking system, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for identification and adjustment.
Check for rubbing and wheel security
Lift or support each wheel only if you can do so safely, then turn it slowly. Listen and look for continuous brake rub or another obstruction. A brief light sound can have different causes, but persistent rubbing, a wheel that stops abruptly or a rotor that appears bent requires attention before riding. Confirm that the axle, quick-release mechanism or other wheel-retention system is fully secured according to the manual.

When braking means stop
Do not ride with weak braking, a lever that feels abnormal, a loose pad or cable, visible hydraulic leakage, a damaged rotor or any other safety-critical defect. If you cannot identify and correct the problem confidently, have the bike assessed by a qualified bicycle technician. A checklist confirms basic function; it is not a substitute for a brake service.
3. Check wheels, handlebars, controls and frame
Spin and inspect the wheels
With the bike stationary, check that each wheel is centered between the fork or frame and spins without an obvious obstruction. Look for a tyre touching the frame, fork or brake hardware. Examine the rim for a major dent or crack and stop if you see structural damage.
Test the cockpit and controls
Look over the handlebars, stem, grips, throttle, display, switches and brake levers. Nothing should be cracked, unexpectedly loose or able to rotate when it should be fixed. CPSC guidance specifically includes handlebars, throttle, cables and frame in an e-bike inspection. Trace cables and hoses for pinching, exposed damage or a connection that has pulled free.

4. Make lights and visibility equipment work for the conditions
Clean, attached and switched on
Confirm that every fitted light and reflector is clean, firmly attached and functioning. Check the front and rear from the rider’s normal position, because a lamp can appear bright while pointing into the road or sky. Replace or recharge the light source before leaving if it is intermittent or too dim for the conditions. Keep reflective equipment clean and positioned where it can be seen.
Night rules depend on where you ride
Lighting law is jurisdiction-specific. In the UK, the Highway Code’s Annex 1 says cyclists must ensure their brakes are efficient and “have white front and red rear lights lit when cycling at night.” That is UK guidance, not a worldwide rule. Other places may set different colours, mounting positions, flashing modes, hours or reflector requirements. Check the traffic rules where you will ride, and use additional reflective clothing or equipment in darkness, rain, fog or other low-visibility conditions. NHTSA also advises visibility measures for night and low-visibility riding.
Visibility is more than legal compliance
Even when lights are not legally required, use them when drivers, pedestrians or other cyclists may have difficulty seeing you. Select a setting that makes your position and direction clear without obscuring the lamp with a bag or clothing. Carry a backup light or charging solution on longer rides if your equipment can run out of power.
5. Check the chain and drivetrain
Verify that the chain is present, reasonably clean, lubricated and able to move freely. Look for a chain that is rusted, kinked, stretched enough to skip, or trapped between gears. If it has come off, stop and refit it only if you can do so safely and know the correct procedure; otherwise arrange assistance. Never place fingers near a moving chain, chainring or wheel.

Use a lubricant intended for bicycle chains and follow the product and bicycle-maker instructions. Excess oil can attract dirt, while a dry or corroded chain can shift poorly and increase wear. The chain check complements, rather than replaces, inspection of the motor, crank, belt or other drivetrain parts fitted to your model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Check the battery and electrical system
Look for damage or fault indications
Inspect the battery casing, mounting area, contacts and visible wiring. Stop if you see swelling, a crack, impact damage, scorch marks, corrosion, a loose mount, unusual heat or a warning message. Do not open, puncture, bypass or improvise a repair for a lithium-ion battery. Follow the manufacturer’s charging, storage and transport instructions.
Confirm charge for the actual trip
Check the display or battery indicator and allow enough charge for the distance, hills, temperature, load and assistance level you expect to use. North Dakota Vision Zero includes battery charge in its before-every-ride list, while NSW Government advises checking for battery damage or faults. A full indicator does not guarantee a particular range, so plan a safe return and know how the bike behaves if assistance stops.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the controls after power-up
Turn the system on according to the manual and confirm that the display, assistance controls and throttle (if fitted) respond normally. Keep the wheel and pedals clear while powering up. If the motor engages unexpectedly, a control sticks or an error code appears, switch the system off and resolve the problem before moving.

7. Finish with a cautious test ride
- Choose a safe place. Use a quiet, clear area away from traffic, pedestrians and steep slopes. Wear the protective equipment required or recommended where you ride.
- Start slowly. Check that the steering is straight and that assistance engages smoothly rather than surging.
- Test each brake. At low speed, apply the brakes progressively and confirm that the bike slows and stops in a controlled line. Do not wait until a traffic situation to discover a fault.
- Listen and feel. Stop for grinding, repeated rubbing, wobbling, unusual vibration, a loose component or an electrical warning.
- Recheck after loading. If you added a child seat, panniers or other load, confirm that nothing contacts a wheel, chain, brake or light.
NHTSA recommends taking a test ride after the quick check to make sure the bicycle operates as expected. Keep this ride deliberately short; it is a functional confirmation, not a substitute for maintenance or a road test at speed.
What to do when a check fails
- Minor, clearly understood adjustment: Follow the bike maker’s instructions and use the correct tool. Recheck the same item and complete the test ride before entering traffic.
- Safety-critical or uncertain fault: Do not ride. Photograph the problem, keep the bike secure and ask a qualified technician or the manufacturer for guidance.
- Repeated fault: Record when it occurs, any display code and the conditions. A recurring brake, wheel, control or battery issue needs a proper diagnosis rather than repeated temporary fixes.
- Damage after a crash or impact: Treat the frame, fork, wheel, battery and controls as suspect even when the damage is not obvious. Arrange an inspection before the next ride.
Adapt the checklist to your route and jurisdiction
The seven checks remain useful in every location, but the details change with the bike and the ride. A cargo e-bike with a heavy load, a folding model, a bike with a throttle, and a machine using hydraulic brakes each has model-specific inspection points. Read the manual for wheel-retention systems, battery handling, control operation and adjustment limits.
Local law controls lighting, reflectors, helmet use, road position and where an e-bike may be ridden. Confirm those requirements for the jurisdiction and time of day rather than relying on advice written for another country. The UK Highway Code’s lighting statement is one example of a national rule, not a universal standard.

A practical three-minute routine
- First minute: Walk around both tyres and wheels; check air, damage, tread, secure attachment and free rotation.
- Second minute: Squeeze both brake levers, inspect pads and cables or hoses, and check the handlebars, throttle, controls, frame and chain.
- Third minute: Check battery condition and charge, switch on the required lights, confirm reflectors are clean, then make the cautious test ride.
Skipping a day because the bike “was fine yesterday” removes the value of the routine: tyres lose air, fasteners loosen, batteries can be damaged and lights can fail between rides. A quick stationary check and low-speed test are a small time cost compared with discovering a fault in traffic.
