Neither motorcycle is universally better. Choose the Ducati Scrambler Icon if your riding is primarily paved, you want a substantially lower seat, and you value a compact street-scrambler format. Choose the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE if touring, gravel roads, and rougher natural surfaces are part of the plan. Its 21-inch front wheel, 220 mm suspension travel, 220 mm ground clearance, Gravel mode, and rear-ABS-off setting are all aimed at that broader terrain mission.
The published seat heights are 795 mm for the current U.S. Scrambler Icon page and 855 mm for Suzuki’s 800DE specification, a 60 mm difference. That number matters for reach, but inseam, seat shape, suspension sag, and riding boots determine whether either motorcycle feels manageable at a stop.

What each motorcycle is meant to do
Ducati Scrambler Icon: a pavement-first scrambler
The Icon makes the most sense for a rider who wants scrambler styling and an easygoing street remit rather than a dedicated off-road travel tool. Ducati’s current U.S. Scrambler page lists a 795 mm seat and describes the Icon family with Road and Sport riding modes, cornering ABS, and four adjustable Ducati Traction Control levels. Those features suit changing pavement conditions and spirited road riding, while the lower seat helps riders who are sensitive to reach at stops. See the Ducati Scrambler model page for the current family presentation.

That positioning does not mean the Icon cannot encounter an unpaved lane. It means you should treat occasional smooth gravel as an incidental use case unless your local specification and tires say otherwise. The cited Ducati material does not establish the Icon’s ground clearance, wheel size, suspension travel, or a gravel-specific riding mode, so those attributes should not be inferred from the scrambler name alone.
Suzuki V-Strom 800DE: touring with genuine rough-surface intent
Suzuki explicitly positions the V-Strom 800DE for daily riding, winding roads, long trips, and exploration on natural surfaces. Its published equipment includes a 21-inch wire-spoked front wheel, 220 mm of front and rear suspension travel, and 220 mm of ground clearance. A G (Gravel) riding mode and the ability to turn rear ABS off are also listed. These are meaningful differences when a route includes ruts, loose climbs, deeper gravel, or surfaces where a 17-inch street-oriented setup would offer less margin.
The trade-off is physical size. An 855 mm seat is 60 mm taller than the published Icon figure, and the 800DE’s adventure-tourer dimensions can require more deliberate foot placement during low-speed maneuvering. Suzuki’s detailed page is labeled for the 2024 model and identifies the displayed specification table as European specification, so consult the local-year version before treating every figure as applicable in your market: Suzuki V-Strom 800DE specifications.

Seat height and real-world reach
| Motorcycle | Published seat height | What the figure tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Ducati Scrambler Icon | 795 mm | Lower published seat; generally easier to reach the ground, subject to seat width and suspension setup. |
| Suzuki V-Strom 800DE | 855 mm | 60 mm taller than the Icon; creates more clearance but demands more inseam or a comfortable one-foot stopping technique. |
The 60 mm difference is published, not a guarantee of a 60 mm difference in your own reach. A wide seat can spread your legs and make a nominally lower motorcycle feel taller. Sag under your weight changes the loaded seat height, and boots add or remove effective reach. When comparing the two, measure your inseam in riding gear, then sit on each motorcycle with the suspension loaded naturally.

A lower-seat path for the V-Strom
Suzuki’s 2025 accessory catalog lists a V-Strom 800DE low seat, part 45100-25LC0-CKA, described as 20 mm lower than the standard seat. That would reduce the published 855 mm figure by 20 mm if the accessory is correctly fitted, but it would not make the 800DE equivalent to the Icon’s 795 mm seat. Confirm exact model-year and market fitment, dealer availability, and whether the accessory changes your riding position before ordering. The catalog is available as a Suzuki accessories PDF.
Terrain hardware: why the V-Strom has the advantage off pavement
Front wheel, travel, and clearance
A 21-inch wire-spoked front wheel is a conventional advantage for an adventure motorcycle that must roll over irregular surfaces. It can help the front tire maintain momentum across stones, ruts, and washboard compared with a smaller street-biased wheel, although tire choice and rider technique still matter. The 800DE’s 220 mm of front and rear suspension travel gives the chassis more room to absorb large undulations, while 220 mm of ground clearance reduces the likelihood of striking the underside on a crest or embedded obstacle.
Those figures explain the V-Strom’s intended role; they do not promise immunity from damage or make it a competition enduro motorcycle. Speed, load, surface, and the rider’s line choice determine what the motorcycle can safely handle. The Ducati page supplied for this comparison does not establish equivalent Icon figures for wheel diameter, suspension travel, or clearance, so a specification-based off-road ranking should favor the V-Strom on the evidence available without inventing Ducati numbers.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Gravel mode and rear-ABS control
The 800DE’s G (Gravel) mode is a factory electronic setting for loose-surface riding, and Suzuki lists rear ABS off as an available control choice. Rear-wheel ABS intervention can be undesirable for some experienced riders on loose terrain, where controlled rear-wheel lock can help tighten a turn. It is not automatically safer for every rider: disabling a safety system increases the need for judgment, and road regulations or local conditions may affect when the setting is appropriate. The key comparison is that Suzuki explicitly supplies these tools; no equivalent gravel mode or rear-ABS-off function is established for the Icon in the cited Ducati material.

Road electronics and everyday control
| Feature | Scrambler Icon | V-Strom 800DE |
|---|---|---|
| Riding modes | Road and Sport, according to Ducati’s current Scrambler page. | Includes G (Gravel) mode in Suzuki’s listed equipment. |
| ABS information | Cornering ABS listed by Ducati. | Rear ABS can be switched off for the stated gravel-use configuration. |
| Traction control | Four adjustable Ducati Traction Control levels. | The supplied Suzuki specification emphasizes gravel control; do not assume identical adjustment levels without checking the local manual. |
| Quick shifting | Up/down quick-shift system is available as an accessory. | No quick-shift specification is established in the cited material. |
The Icon’s electronics are oriented toward adapting a road motorcycle’s response and intervention level. The V-Strom’s distinguishing controls are aimed at changing the motorcycle’s behavior on loose ground. Neither list should be read as a complete market-equipment sheet: trim, model year, and region can change standard versus optional equipment.
Touring, luggage, and the kind of trip you actually take
If your longest rides are day trips on pavement, the Icon’s lower seat and compact format may be more valuable than adventure hardware you rarely use. A lighter-feeling, easier-to-place motorcycle can reduce fatigue in city traffic and during repeated stops, even though a specification sheet cannot quantify that sensation for you.
If you regularly ride several hours to reach remote roads, carry camping equipment, or encounter gravel as part of the route rather than as an exception, the 800DE’s stated mission is the closer match. Its 21-inch wheel, long travel, clearance, Gravel mode, and rear-ABS control all support that plan. You still need to assess the exact luggage system, rack capacity, wind protection, and payload for your market; the cited pages do not establish a standard luggage volume or a complete touring load rating.

The motorcycle that matches those four facts is usually the better purchase.

Weight figures: why a direct ranking would be misleading
| Published figure | Model and basis | Why it cannot settle the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| 230 kg (507 lb) | V-Strom 800DE curb mass; Suzuki identifies the specification as European. | Market and equipment basis must match the Ducati figure before comparing. |
| 388 lb | Ducati USA page’s dry/curb-weight figure for the related Icon Dark variant. | It is not an apples-to-apples current Scrambler Icon figure and uses a different variant and weight basis. |
It would be incorrect to announce that one motorcycle is definitively lighter from these numbers. The Suzuki value is a curb mass, while Ducati’s cited number is attached to the Icon Dark and described on the U.S. page as a dry curb-weight figure. Fuel, fluids, accessories, equipment, trim, and regional labeling can all change the result. Before making weight a deciding factor, compare the same model year, exact trim, market, and measurement basis.
Power claims and specification discipline
A 2025 Ducati announcement refers to 73 hp for the air-cooled twin, but that number is not confirmed here as the exact current U.S. Scrambler Icon specification. Do not use it to create a precise horsepower contest with the V-Strom. For this choice, the documented differences in seat height, terrain equipment, and riding controls are more reliable decision points than a power figure detached from a confirmed trim and market.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Model-year and geography checks before you buy
Online comparison pages often blend family-level information with individual trims. Ducati’s U.S. Scrambler page presents current family content and refers to the Icon Dark in some passages, while the title of your question is specifically the Icon. Suzuki’s detailed 800DE page is labeled 2024 and marks its specification table as European. A motorcycle sold in another country or a later model year may have different equipment, weights, colors, homologation, or pricing.
- Identify the exact local model name, model year, and trim on the manufacturer’s regional site.
- Confirm whether the listed seat height is for the standard seat or an accessory seat.
- Check whether weight is dry, curb, wet, or otherwise defined, and compare like with like.
- Ask the dealer which electronics and accessories are standard in your market.
- Get a written price and availability for the V-Strom low seat if fit is a concern; the part number alone does not guarantee local stock.
A practical decision process
1. Classify your surface split
If at least the overwhelming majority of your riding is paved and your unpaved use means short, maintained gravel links, start with the Icon. If natural surfaces are a planned destination, especially with long-distance travel, start with the 800DE and verify that its height works for you.

2. Test the stopping position, not just the seat number
At a dealer, sit in your normal boots and riding trousers. Check whether you can move one foot securely to the ground, hold the motorcycle upright while turning the bars, and reverse it without stretching. Repeat with the motorcycle loaded as you expect to ride. A lower number helps, but confidence and control are the real fit test.
3. Price the complete setup
List the luggage, racks, protection, navigation, seat, and other equipment you actually need. The 800DE’s adventure equipment may reduce the need to retrofit terrain capability, while the Icon may avoid paying for hardware you never use. The supplied materials do not provide complete accessory prices, inventory, or market-specific package contents, so obtain those locally.
4. Recheck the exact specification
Use Ducati’s current regional Scrambler page and Suzuki’s regional V-Strom page immediately before signing. Confirm the seat, curb or dry weight basis, electronics, accessory compatibility, and warranty terms for the motorcycle in front of you—not a neighboring trim shown in a family brochure.

Common comparison mistakes
- Treating seat height as the whole fit story: width, sag, boots, and technique change actual reach.
- Comparing unlike weights: the 230 kg European curb figure and the related Icon Dark’s 388 lb figure are not a valid ranking.
- Assuming scrambler styling equals adventure capability: the cited Ducati material does not establish the Icon’s wheel, clearance, or travel figures.
- Assuming the 800DE is automatically better on every road: its taller chassis and larger adventure format may be unnecessary for a pavement-only rider.
- Assuming an accessory is universally available: the 20 mm lower seat requires exact model-year and market fitment confirmation.
- Turning manufacturer specifications into test results: equipment lists show intended design, not acceleration, comfort, reliability, or off-road performance in your hands.
Bottom line
Buy the Ducati Scrambler Icon for the lower 795 mm seat, pavement-centered riding, and road-focused electronics. Buy the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE for touring routes that include gravel or rougher natural surfaces, where its 21-inch front wheel, 220 mm suspension travel, 220 mm clearance, Gravel mode, and rear-ABS control directly support the mission. If the V-Strom’s 855 mm seat is the only obstacle, investigate the listed 20 mm lower seat—but verify fitment and availability. The better motorcycle is the one that matches your terrain and lets you stop, turn, and carry your intended load with confidence.
