Neither motorcycle is universally better. The Ducati Hypermotard 950 is an upright, long-travel motard built around low-speed agility, visibility and playful road riding. The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R is a full supersport with a 998cc inline-four, substantially higher published peak output and a chassis focused on high-performance road or track work. Choose the Ducati for its standing-friendly ergonomics and broad-use attitude; choose the Kawasaki if supersport acceleration, a tucked riding position and circuit-oriented hardware are your priorities.
The figures below come from Ducati’s current U.S. Hypermotard 950 technical page and Kawasaki’s 2025 U.S. ZX-10R specification sheet. They are different model-year contexts, different weight definitions and different power-test standards, so this is a specification-led buying guide—not a claim about real-world lap times, comfort, reliability or running cost.

The short answer: decide by use, not by horsepower
The Hypermotard 950 and Ninja ZX-10R occupy almost opposite ends of the street-motorcycle spectrum. Ducati gives the Hypermotard a tall seat, 70-degree steering angle, long suspension travel and an upright stance. Kawasaki gives the ZX-10R a low seat, shorter travel and a high-revving inline-four packaged in supersport bodywork.
If your riding includes urban traffic, tight switchbacks, rough pavement, frequent direction changes or occasional standing on the pegs, the Hypermotard’s format is the more natural fit. If you want the engine response, aerodynamic posture and electronic systems associated with a modern liter-class supersport, the ZX-10R is the logical choice. The Kawasaki’s larger published output does not by itself make it the better motorcycle for every road or rider.

What each motorcycle is designed to do
Ducati Hypermotard 950: upright motard versatility
The Hypermotard 950 uses Ducati’s 937cc Testastretta 11° L-twin. Its design brief is visible in the chassis: a tall riding position, substantial wheel movement and a steering layout Ducati describes as having a 70-degree steering angle. Those choices favor leverage and maneuverability rather than the fully tucked posture of a supersport.
Ducati sells the family in standard and SP forms. Both use the same basic engine capacity and published peak output, but the SP adds longer travel, Öhlins suspension and a taller seat. The standard model uses 170mm of front travel and 150mm rear; the SP increases those figures to 185mm and 175mm.
Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R: liter-class supersport performance
The 2025 U.S.-specification ZX-10R uses a 998cc inline-four. Its low, forward-leaning supersport layout places more emphasis on aerodynamic efficiency, high-speed stability and precise control at elevated pace than on the Hypermotard’s upright leverage.

The 32.9-inch seat is considerably lower than either Hypermotard version, although the riding position still differs radically because the Kawasaki puts the rider behind a supersport fairing and over lower-set controls.
Published specifications compared
This table keeps the source context attached to every figure. Ducati’s U.S. technical page presents standard and SP columns but does not clearly identify a model year in the extracted table. Kawasaki’s detailed figures are from its 2025 U.S. specification sheet.

The weight figures are not directly interchangeable: Ducati calls its number “wet weight no fuel,” while Kawasaki calls its numbers curb weight and supplies separate ABS and non-ABS values. A simple subtraction therefore cannot establish which bike feels lighter in operation.

Engine character and the meaning of the output gap
Hypermotard 950: lower peak figures, earlier torque peak
Ducati lists 114 hp at 9,000 rpm and 71 lb-ft at 7,250 rpm for the Hypermotard 950 family. The earlier torque peak suits a motorcycle that is often ridden with frequent throttle changes and rapid transitions rather than held at the top of a long straight.
Ducati’s media announcement for the model family also describes peak torque as 9.8 kgm at 7,250 rpm. That historical announcement supports the same general output description, but it is not an independent test and should not be treated as a separate dyno result.
ZX-10R: much higher peak power at higher engine speed
Kawasaki’s 2025 U.S. sheet lists 196.0 hp at 11,500 rpm and 83.9 lb-ft at 11,300 rpm. Kawasaki notes that the horsepower figure follows ISO 4106. A rating made under that standard can differ from an SAE-rated number, so the two manufacturers’ horsepower claims should not be presented as if they came from one controlled dyno session.
A 2026 Kawasaki product page surfaced with an 82.5 lb-ft torque figure at 11,300 rpm, but a detailed 2026 specification sheet was not available with the cited material. Do not substitute that 2026 number for the 2025 specification or assume that every 2026 market and trim has identical equipment.
Why the Kawasaki number is not a complete performance verdict
The published figures show a large peak-power difference, but they do not measure acceleration, gearing, traction, aerodynamic drag or rider skill. The ZX-10R’s output arrives at much higher engine speed and through a different chassis and riding position. The Hypermotard’s lower number is paired with a more upright layout and a different intended use. A direct street race, top-speed claim or lap-time ranking would require a controlled test that is not provided here.
Ergonomics: seat height is only the starting point
Hypermotard posture and leverage
The standard Hypermotard seat is 34.2 inches; the SP is 35.0 inches. Those heights can make short inseams more demanding at stops, but the upright bar position gives the rider leverage over the front end and a clear view through traffic. The long-travel chassis also leaves more room for suspension movement when pavement quality changes.

The motard-style layout makes it easier to shift body position quickly in a tight corner and practical to ride with a relaxed torso. Those are design implications of the geometry, not a promise that every rider will find the Ducati more comfortable.
ZX-10R posture and lower seat
The ZX-10R’s 32.9-inch seat is lower on paper than either Ducati version. That may help a rider reach the ground, but the supersport’s clip-on-style reach, rear-set controls and forward torso angle impose a different load on wrists, hips and neck. A lower seat does not automatically mean an easier all-day riding position.
Riders should sit on both motorcycles with the intended riding gear, turn the bars through their range and check whether they can operate the rear brake and shift lever without changing foot position. Seat-height numbers alone cannot account for seat width, suspension sag or the rider’s inseam.
Suspension, wheels and handling priorities
Travel and component grade
The Hypermotard standard’s 170mm front and 150mm rear travel exceed the ZX-10R’s 4.7-inch front and 4.5-inch rear figures when converted to the same unit. The SP extends travel again to 185mm front and 175mm rear and uses Öhlins suspension. This longer-travel arrangement is intended to accommodate more chassis movement and motard-style riding inputs; it does not prove superior comfort or cornering grip in every situation.
The ZX-10R uses Showa Balance Free components with shorter travel. That specification aligns with a supersport’s need for controlled chassis movement under hard braking and acceleration. Setup, spring rate, rider weight, tire condition and road surface will strongly influence the result.
Tire dimensions and compound differences
Both families use a 120/70 ZR17 front tire. Ducati specifies a 180/55 ZR17 rear for both Hypermotard versions, with Diablo Rosso III on the standard motorcycle and Diablo Supercorsa SP on the SP. Kawasaki specifies a wider 190/55 ZR17 rear on the 2025 ZX-10R.

- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
The Ducati trim distinction matters: a Supercorsa SP is a different application from the standard bike’s Rosso III. Tire compound, warm-up behavior, wet-weather suitability and service life should be considered alongside size. If replacing a tire, confirm the exact model year, load and speed rating, wheel compatibility and the tire maker’s application guidance; a size match alone does not guarantee correct fitment.

Electronic rider aids and how they differ
Ducati equipment
Ducati lists Riding Modes, Bosch Cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control EVO and Ducati Wheelie Control EVO for the Hypermotard 950 family. Ducati Quick Shift is standard on the SP and available or variant-dependent on the 950, so the exact equipment list should be checked for the motorcycle being purchased.
These systems allow the rider to tailor intervention to conditions and experience. Cornering ABS and traction control can support control when the motorcycle is leaned over, but they do not remove the need for appropriate speed, tires and braking technique.
Kawasaki equipment
Kawasaki lists cruise control, launch control, traction control, engine-braking control, a quickshifter, a corner-management function and ABS on ABS versions of the 2025 ZX-10R. The collection is oriented toward managing a powerful engine during acceleration, braking and track-style starts as well as ordinary road use.
Because Kawasaki lists both non-ABS and ABS curb weights, verify whether a particular motorcycle has ABS before comparing specifications or negotiating a purchase. Equipment and calibration can vary by market and model year.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat the electronics cannot tell you
A longer list of rider aids does not establish that one motorcycle is safer for every rider. The systems differ in calibration, rider interface and operating assumptions. Treat them as tools that expand the usable envelope, not as substitutes for training or a properly maintained motorcycle.

Fuel capacity, service and ownership questions
Tank size and expected range
Ducati lists a 3.8 U.S.-gallon tank; Kawasaki lists 4.5 gallons for the 2025 ZX-10R. The Kawasaki therefore has greater stated capacity, but no fuel-consumption figures are established here. Do not turn tank volume into a claimed range or number of stops without consumption data for the exact riding conditions.
Scheduled maintenance
Ducati lists a 9,000-mile or 12-month service interval for the Hypermotard 950. The cited Kawasaki specification sheet does not provide a comparable service interval. That absence is not evidence that Kawasaki maintenance is more or less frequent; obtain the owner’s manual and a written dealer schedule for the exact year and market.
Prices and running costs
Prices, inventory and maintenance costs are location- and date-dependent and were not established by the cited specifications. Confirm the local trim, taxes, destination charges, insurance, tire prices and labor rates before treating either motorcycle as cheaper to own. The different rear-tire sizes and Ducati’s standard-versus-SP compounds can materially change replacement choices, but a cost comparison requires current local quotes.

- Mostly city streets and tight back roads: Start with the Hypermotard 950. Its upright posture, steering leverage and longer travel align with frequent low-speed changes and imperfect pavement.
- Track days or a supersport-focused riding goal: Start with the ZX-10R. Its 196.0-hp published rating, supersport ergonomics, Showa Balance Free suspension and track-oriented electronic functions match that priority.
- Mixed road riding with occasional rough surfaces: Compare the standard Hypermotard and ZX-10R in person, then decide whether visibility and suspension movement or engine performance and fairing protection matter more. Neither specification sheet proves a universal comfort winner.
- Shorter inseam: The ZX-10R has the lower published seat at 32.9 inches. Still check reach to the bars and foot controls, because its riding posture can be more demanding even when both feet reach the ground.
- Experienced rider seeking the sharpest Ducati chassis package: The Hypermotard SP adds 15mm of front travel, 25mm of rear travel over the standard model and Öhlins suspension, while raising the seat to 35.0 inches. Those are equipment changes, not a guarantee of faster lap times.
- Frequent touring between fuel stops: The ZX-10R has the larger stated tank at 4.5 gallons versus Ducati’s 3.8, but actual range remains unconfirmed without fuel-economy data.
How to compare the exact motorcycles at a dealership
- Confirm the identity: Record model year, trim, ABS status and market. Do not compare a 2025 ZX-10R sheet with an assumed 2026 specification.
- Check the fit: Sit in normal riding gear, reach the ground, rotate the bars, operate both levers and confirm that the riding position is sustainable for your typical trip.
- Inspect the tires: Verify the front and rear sizes, speed and load ratings, manufacturing date and remaining tread. Confirm that any replacement follows the tire maker’s fitment guidance.
- Ask for the maintenance schedule: Get the interval, valve-clearance requirements, fluid specifications and labor estimate in writing for the exact vehicle identification number.
- Review the electronics: Identify which aids are fitted, whether ABS is present and how riding modes, traction control and quickshift settings are changed.
- Budget the complete purchase: Include registration, insurance, protective equipment, first service and likely tire replacement rather than comparing only a displayed sale price.
Model-year and trim cautions
Do not treat the Ducati table as a single specification
The Hypermotard 950 and 950 SP share the 937cc engine and listed 114-hp peak, but they do not share seat height, suspension travel, suspension hardware or tire compound. A listing that says only “Hypermotard 950” is incomplete for a serious comparison.
Do not relabel 2025 Kawasaki data as 2026
The detailed Kawasaki numbers in this comparison belong to the 2025 U.S. specification sheet. A 2026 product page showed 82.5 lb-ft at 11,300 rpm, but the full 2026 specification set was not available in the cited material. Verify current equipment and output with the local Kawasaki listing before buying.
Regional differences matter
ABS availability, emissions equipment, electronic features, colors, tires and pricing can change by country. Use the figures here as a structured starting point, then confirm the exact local motorcycle and its documentation.
Verdict: choose the motorcycle that matches your roads
Choose the Ducati Hypermotard 950 when your priority is an upright motard experience, a tall and agile chassis, useful suspension travel and a 114-hp V-twin character. Choose the Hypermotard 950 SP when you want the same basic engine concept with longer travel, Öhlins suspension and a taller seat.

Its 196.0-hp published rating is a major specification advantage, but it is measured under Kawasaki’s stated ISO 4106 standard and is not a substitute for a controlled comparison.
For a buyer asking “Ducati Hypermotard 950 vs Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R, which is better?”, the accurate answer is use-dependent: the Ducati is the better match for upright, flexible road riding, while the Kawasaki is the better match for a supersport-centered performance brief.
