There is no universal winner. The Ducati Hypermotard 950 is the better match for an upright, supermoto-style motorcycle that prioritizes steering freedom and short, playful rides. The Kawasaki Ninja 1100SX is the stronger paper choice for sport touring, cruise-controlled highway miles and all-day road trips.
The comparison is not a conventional like-for-like sportbike test. Ducati’s current Hypermotard 950 technical page establishes specifications for the 950 and 950 SP family, but does not establish 2025 U.S. availability or a 2025 U.S. price. Kawasaki publishes U.S. specifications and manufacturer suggested retail prices for its 2025 Ninja 1100SX ABS and SE ABS. Use local availability, your inseam and a test ride to make the final decision.

Quick answer: which motorcycle is better?
Choose the Ducati Hypermotard 950 when your priority is an upright, high-steering-angle, supermoto-inspired format. Its 70-degree steering angle, tall stance and long-travel suspension are aimed at agile, entertaining road use rather than covering long distances with touring equipment.

The engine figures are manufacturer claims measured under each company’s own procedures, not results from one independent comparison. Ducati lists 114 horsepower and 96 Nm for the Hypermotard; Kawasaki lists 134 horsepower and 83.2 lb-ft for the Ninja. Those numbers describe different engine layouts and cannot by themselves predict which motorcycle will feel faster or easier to ride.

|---|---|---|
| Supermoto-style upright fun | Ducati Hypermotard 950 | 70-degree steering angle, tall stance and long-travel chassis |

Ducati Hypermotard 950: upright supermoto character
The Hypermotard 950 family uses an upright, narrow-waisted supermoto-style concept. The format puts the rider high, gives the front end a large steering angle and uses substantial suspension travel. That combination is intended to make direction changes and low-speed maneuvering a central part of the experience. Ducati’s technical page lists a 70-degree steering angle for the family.
The standard 950 and the higher-specification SP are the relevant versions on Ducati’s current technical page. Both use the same 937 cc Testastretta 11-degree L-twin specification, but the SP changes the suspension, wheels, travel and standard equipment. The page is current but undated, so it should not be read as proof that either version is offered as a 2025 U.S. model.

Kawasaki Ninja 1100SX: sport touring with sportbike hardware
Kawasaki describes the Ninja 1100SX as a sport tourer. Its mission combines sporting road use with the ability to spend a full day on the road. The official U.S. overview and 2025 model pages identify cruise control, rider-selectable power modes, traction control, ABS, a cornering-management function, an IMU that informs chassis control and a quick shifter.
That equipment list points to a motorcycle designed to reduce workload on long paved routes while retaining performance-oriented controls. It does not prove a particular level of wind protection, seat comfort, luggage capacity, fuel economy or range; the cited pages do not provide comparative test data for those subjects.
Engine specifications and likely character

|---|---|---|
| Configuration | 937 cc Testastretta 11-degree L-twin | 1,099 cc liquid-cooled inline-four |
| Published peak power | 114 hp (84 kW) at 9,000 rpm | 134 hp at 9,000 rpm |
| Published peak torque | 96 Nm (71 lb-ft) at 7,250 rpm | 83.2 lb-ft at 7,600 rpm |
| Transmission and clutch details | Not fully stated in the cited specification summary; quick shift is standard on SP, not standard on the 950 | Six-speed transmission, assist-and-slipper clutch and quick shifter |
Ducati’s current Hypermotard 950 technical specifications list 114 hp (84 kW) at 9,000 rpm and 96 Nm (71 lb-ft) at 7,250 rpm. The 937 cc L-twin’s cylinder arrangement and stated torque peak suggest the kind of engine character buyers seek in an upright, responsive motorcycle, but the source does not provide a measured acceleration test, gearing comparison or dyno curve.

Kawasaki’s 2025 Ninja 1100SX ABS U.S. page lists 134 hp at 9,000 rpm and 83.2 lb-ft at 7,600 rpm from a 1,099 cc liquid-cooled inline-four. The larger displacement and higher stated horsepower favor the Kawasaki on the specification sheet, while the Ducati lists more peak torque in the units shown. Because the companies do not identify one shared test protocol, do not treat the difference as a laboratory ranking.

The Kawasaki’s six-speed transmission, assist-and-slipper clutch and quick shifter are explicitly listed as standard equipment on the ABS model. Ducati’s table distinguishes the SP by making quick shift standard there; it is not listed as standard on the regular Hypermotard 950. Confirm the exact equipment of a locally supplied Ducati before placing a deposit.
Chassis, dimensions and seat-fit implications
| Dimension or chassis item | Hypermotard 950 | Hypermotard 950 SP | Ninja 1100SX |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wet weight, without fuel | 193 kg (425 lb) | 191 kg (421 lb) | Not stated in the cited U.S. page |
| Seat height | 870 mm (34.2 in) | 890 mm (35.0 in) | Not stated in the cited U.S. page |
| Wheelbase | 1,493 mm | Not separately stated; family specification | Not stated in the cited U.S. page |
| Fuel tank | 14.5 L (3.8 U.S. gal) | Family specification shown by Ducati | Not stated in the cited U.S. page |
| Front/rear wheel travel | 170 mm / 150 mm | 185 mm / 175 mm | Not stated in the cited U.S. page |
| Steering angle | 70 degrees for the family | 70 degrees for the family | Not stated in the cited U.S. page |
Ducati lists the standard 950 at 193 kg (425 lb) wet without fuel, with an 870 mm (34.2 in) seat, a 1,493 mm wheelbase and a 14.5 L (3.8 U.S. gal) tank. The SP is listed at 191 kg (421 lb) wet without fuel and raises the seat to 890 mm (35.0 in). Those are manufacturer specifications, and the unusual “without fuel” qualification means the weights are not directly comparable with a rival’s figure unless Kawasaki uses the same convention.
Suspension travel is a major format difference. Ducati lists 170 mm front and 150 mm rear travel for the standard 950 and RVE, while the SP receives 185 mm front and 175 mm rear. More travel can help a motorcycle absorb broken pavement and maintain geometry through larger suspension movements, but the source does not establish ride comfort or handling performance. Seat height, inseam length and your ability to put one foot securely down matter more than a catalog label; sit on both motorcycles before buying.
The Ninja’s seat height, wet weight, wheelbase, tank capacity and suspension travel are not stated in the cited U.S. pages used for this comparison. Do not fill those cells with figures from another year, market or trim. A dealer’s local specification sheet can resolve the fit questions for the exact motorcycle you would register.

Hypermotard trim differences
The provided Ducati specifications establish the mechanical differences between the standard 950 and SP more clearly than a simple family name does. The standard model uses Marzocchi front suspension and a Sachs rear shock. The SP uses Öhlins suspension, forged Marchesini wheels and the longer 185 mm/175 mm travel figures. Quick shift is standard on the SP and not standard on the standard 950 according to Ducati’s specification table.
Do not assume that a standard 950 has every electronic or chassis feature shown in SP promotional material. Ask the seller for the build sheet and model code, especially if a used or imported motorcycle is being considered.
Touring capability, carrying and daily use
The Kawasaki has the clearest stated touring brief. Kawasaki’s overview calls the Ninja 1100SX a sport tourer and the model page includes cruise control, a six-speed gearbox and electronic rider aids suited to sustained paved-road travel. That makes it the logical choice on paper for riders who regularly connect distant roads, commute on highways or want one motorcycle for sporting rides and full-day trips.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Ducati’s 14.5 L (3.8 U.S. gal) tank and upright layout describe its basic packaging, but the cited Ducati page does not establish real-world fuel economy, riding range, luggage capacity, wind protection, passenger comfort or accessory availability. Do not infer those results from the tank number alone. If touring is your plan, inspect the exact luggage and wind-management options offered in your country and check how they affect payload and seat access.
Neither manufacturer source supplies a comparative carrying-capacity figure or a standardized comfort measurement. A road trip decision therefore needs a practical inspection: sit in your normal riding gear, check reach to the bars and foot controls, test the screen at your normal speed where legal, and confirm whether the desired luggage is approved for that model and trim.
Standard versus SP Ducati, and standard versus SE Kawasaki
| Model | Published equipment distinction | Who should investigate it |
|---|---|---|
| Hypermotard 950 | Marzocchi fork, Sachs rear shock, 170/150 mm travel; quick shift not standard in Ducati’s table | Riders who want the family format and lower 870 mm seat |
| Hypermotard 950 SP | Öhlins suspension, forged Marchesini wheels, 185/175 mm travel, 890 mm seat; quick shift standard | Riders who specifically want the upgraded chassis and can manage the taller seat |
| Ninja 1100SX ABS | Showa fork and conventional Kawasaki braking hardware as shown in the U.S. specification listing | Buyers seeking the lower published Kawasaki price |
| Ninja 1100SX SE ABS | Öhlins S46 rear shock and Brembo M4.32 front calipers | Riders who value the SE’s upgraded suspension and front braking hardware |
The 2025 Ninja 1100SX SE ABS page identifies the Öhlins S46 rear shock and Brembo M4.32 front calipers. The standard ABS listing shows a Showa fork and conventional Kawasaki braking hardware in its specifications. Those are equipment distinctions, not proof that one trim will stop shorter or ride more comfortably in every situation.

The Kawasaki figures come from the current U.S. manufacturer pages for the 2025 Ninja 1100SX ABS and 2025 Ninja 1100SX SE ABS. They are U.S. manufacturer MSRPs, not out-the-door prices. Taxes, registration, freight not included in the displayed destination line, dealer charges, accessories and local market conditions can change the amount you pay. Kawasaki also warns that specifications and pricing can change.
Ducati’s source is a current Hypermotard 950 technical page, not a dated 2025 U.S. model page. It establishes the listed 950 and SP specifications but does not establish that a 2025 U.S. example is available or what its local MSRP would be. Compare a written quote for the exact Ducati trim, country and model year with the Kawasaki quote before treating price as a deciding factor.
Maintenance and ownership information that is actually established
Ducati’s current technical specifications state maintenance intervals of 9,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months, with a valve-clearance check at 18,000 miles (30,000 km). The interval is a manufacturer-published requirement for the Hypermotard 950 information shown on that page. Confirm the schedule and labor pricing for the exact market and model year with an authorized service department.
The cited Kawasaki pages do not provide a matching maintenance schedule, reliability statistic, resale forecast, fuel-economy result or total-cost-of-ownership study. It would be misleading to declare one motorcycle cheaper, more reliable or easier to service from these specifications alone. Obtain written service intervals, parts prices, warranty terms and labor rates locally, then include those recurring costs in your budget.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Tires and fitment: a useful physical-product detail
Both official specification sets list a 120/70-17 front tire size. Ducati specifies Pirelli Diablo Rosso III tires on the standard 950 and Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires on the SP. Kawasaki lists a 120/70-17 front tire for the Ninja 1100SX. The nominal size is shared, but that does not make every tire interchangeable in a safe or approved sense.
The rear sizes differ: Ducati’s standard and SP specifications list 180/55 ZR17, while Kawasaki lists 190/50-17. When replacing tires, verify the motorcycle’s year and trim, load and speed ratings, construction, approved clearance and the manufacturer’s fitment guidance. A retailer search for “120/70 ZR17 motorcycle front tire” is only a starting point; confirm the complete specification before ordering.

Which is better for common riding plans?
Mostly urban back roads and short, technical rides
The Ducati is the more coherent choice on paper. Its upright supermoto format, 70-degree steering angle and generous suspension travel directly support frequent direction changes and imperfect pavement. Choose the standard 950 if the 870 mm seat is important; choose the SP only if its 890 mm height and upgraded chassis fit you.
Long highway days and mixed sport touring
The Ninja is the stronger paper match. Kawasaki names sport touring as the mission and supplies cruise control, six-speed gearing, a quick shifter and electronic aids. You still need to verify screen performance, luggage, passenger needs and seat comfort in person because the cited sources do not measure them.
One motorcycle for spirited roads and occasional trips
Start with the Kawasaki if the trips are frequent or involve substantial highway time. Start with the Ducati if “occasional touring” means short transfers between twisty roads and the upright riding position matters more than touring equipment. Make the decision after fitting your luggage and riding gear, not from horsepower alone.

The Ducati standard’s published 870 mm seat is lower than the SP’s 890 mm seat, but Kawasaki’s cited U.S. page does not state a seat height. Sit on both motorcycles with boots you will actually use. A two-centimeter catalog difference does not predict the way seat width, suspension sag and bar position affect reach.
Buyer choosing between premium trims
Compare the Ducati SP with the Ninja 1100SX SE only after deciding which upgrade matters to you. The SP adds Öhlins suspension, forged Marchesini wheels, longer travel and standard quick shift. The SE adds an Öhlins S46 rear shock and Brembo M4.32 front calipers. They are different upgrade philosophies rather than equivalent packages.
A practical 2025 buying checklist
- Define your dominant use. Write down the proportion of supermoto-style local riding, highway travel, commuting and passenger use you expect.
- Choose the correct Ducati version. Compare the standard 950’s 870 mm seat and Marzocchi/Sachs equipment with the SP’s 890 mm seat, Öhlins suspension, forged wheels and longer travel.
- Confirm the Kawasaki trim. Decide whether the standard ABS equipment meets your needs or whether the SE’s Öhlins S46 shock and Brembo M4.32 calipers justify its higher MSRP.
- Check the exact local model year. Ducati’s cited page is current but undated, while Kawasaki’s prices are U.S.-specific 2025 listings. Ask for the VIN or official model code on any quote.
- Calculate the real purchase price. Add destination, tax, registration, dealer charges, accessories and required riding gear. Treat $14,539 and $16,239 as displayed Kawasaki MSRP-plus-destination totals before those additions.
- Verify service support. Use Ducati’s 9,000-mile/15,000-km or 12-month interval and 18,000-mile/30,000-km valve check as planning figures, then obtain local labor rates. Request the Kawasaki schedule from a dealer because it is not stated in the cited pages.
- Fit the motorcycle. Sit on each bike, reach the controls, stand it upright and check foot placement with your normal boots. Do not substitute a catalog seat number for a fit check.
- Arrange a test ride. The specifications do not establish comparative comfort, acceleration, handling, economy, range or reliability. A legal test ride is the appropriate way to resolve those unknowns.
Final decision
For a rider seeking a tall, upright, supermoto-style machine with a wide steering angle and long-travel suspension, the Ducati Hypermotard 950 is the better conceptual fit. The standard 950 is the more approachable Ducati trim on seat height; the SP is the chassis-focused version with Öhlins equipment, forged wheels, longer travel and standard quick shift.
For a rider seeking a sport tourer with published U.S. pricing, cruise control, six-speed gearing, quick shift and a broad electronic-aid package, the Kawasaki Ninja 1100SX is the better paper choice. The SE costs more but adds the Öhlins S46 rear shock and Brembo M4.32 front calipers.
Neither result is a universal ranking. Ducati’s 2025 U.S. availability and price are not established by the cited page, Kawasaki’s dimensions and maintenance schedule are not stated in the cited material, and no independent back-to-back test is available here. Match the motorcycle to your dominant use, verify the local quote and model year, confirm seat fit, and test ride before signing.
