Neither Ducati is universally better. The Hypermotard 698 Mono is the lighter, taller motard-style motorcycle for riders who value a narrow, upright format and playful changes of direction. The Panigale V2 is the fully faired sportbike for riders who want substantially more engine output, a lower seat and a road or track riding position built around speed. Choose the one that matches your roads, posture and fit—not the larger number on a specification sheet.
Quick comparison: what separates these Ducatis
Ducati’s current US product pages describe two motorcycles aimed at different jobs. The Hypermotard 698 Mono uses a 659 cc single-cylinder engine in a motard-style chassis. The Panigale V2 uses an 890 cc 90-degree V2 in a fully faired sportbike. Their published figures are useful for establishing the gap, but they are manufacturer specifications rather than independent acceleration, lap-time or handling tests.

Start with riding format, not horsepower
What the Hypermotard format means
A motard-style motorcycle places the rider in a more upright, open posture than a faired sportbike. That format generally makes it easier to look over traffic, move your body around at low speed and treat a series of corners as a sequence of direction changes rather than as a single high-speed run. The 698 Mono’s identity is therefore defined as much by its stance and single-cylinder character as by its output.

That does not make it a beginner motorcycle by default. A tall seat can challenge a rider who is comfortable on a lower machine, and a light motorcycle still responds quickly to steering and throttle inputs. Treat the Mono as a specialized choice for riders who actually want the motard experience, not simply as a cheaper substitute for a sportbike.
What the Panigale format means
The Panigale V2’s full fairing and sportbike layout put the emphasis on a tucked-in riding position, aerodynamic protection and a high-revving twin-cylinder engine. Riders who spend time on smooth, flowing roads or closed circuits may prefer that posture because it supports deliberate corner entry and an aerodynamic body position. The same posture can feel demanding in stop-and-go traffic or during long periods of very low-speed riding.
Do not assume that a lower seat makes a sportbike universally easier. Reach to the bars, knee angle, steering lock, body flexibility and the motorcycle’s balance at a standstill all affect comfort. A test sit, with the bike held upright by a qualified staff member, tells you more about personal fit than seat height alone.
Power and torque: a large published advantage for the Panigale
Ducati lists 120 hp for the Panigale V2 and 77.5 hp for the Hypermotard 698 Mono. The difference is 42.5 hp at the respective published peak-speed points. The Panigale also has the higher quoted torque figure, 69 lb-ft versus 46.5 lb-ft, a 22.5 lb-ft gap. Those numbers establish a substantial potential performance advantage for the V2, but they do not predict a specific road result for every rider.
Peak figures describe the maximum values Ducati publishes, not the complete shape of either engine’s torque curve. Gear selection, throttle position, engine speed, traction, rider input, road surface and aerodynamics all determine what happens in a particular moment. A single-cylinder engine and a 90-degree V2 also deliver their output differently, so two motorcycles with different peak numbers can feel very different at the same speed.
When the Mono’s output is enough
On public roads, the Mono’s lower published output can be an advantage if your priority is usable involvement rather than the ability to reach a higher top-end pace. The lighter chassis means the engine has less motorcycle to move, and the upright format can make moderate speeds feel active. That is an interpretation of the architecture and listed mass, not a claim of measured acceleration or a promise that the Mono will outperform the Panigale in any test.

When the Panigale’s output matters
The Panigale’s extra power and torque matter most when you want stronger acceleration at higher speeds, more reserve for track-day riding or the option to continue exploring performance as your skills develop. Its engine is not merely a larger version of the Mono’s; it is a different configuration in a different category. Riders should budget for appropriate training and protective equipment rather than treating the output as a reason to ride beyond their experience.
Weight and seat height change the ownership decision
The Mono is 62 lb lighter on Ducati’s listed figures
Ducati lists the Hypermotard at 333 lb wet without fuel and the standard Panigale V2 at 395 lb wet without fuel. That is a 62 lb difference under the same stated exclusion of fuel. The qualifier matters: adding fuel and any accessories increases the scale reading, and a dealer’s preparation process may produce a different as-delivered figure.
Lower mass can make pushing the motorcycle into a garage, recovering from a slow-speed mistake and changing direction feel less intimidating. It does not eliminate the need to learn clutch control, braking technique or correct body position. Nor does it prove that the Mono will be faster through a corner; no independent head-to-head test is established here.
The Panigale’s listed seat is lower
The Panigale V2 has a 33-inch listed seat, while the Mono is listed at 35.6 inches and has low-seat options shown by Ducati. The 2.6-inch difference is meaningful for inseam reach, but it should not be converted into a guarantee that one model fits every shorter or taller rider. Seat width, suspension sag, boots and how far the rider sits from the tank all change effective reach.
Before buying, ask the dealer to demonstrate both standard and any available low-seat configurations. Sit with both feet placed as you would at a stop, then try a controlled walk while straddling the stationary motorcycle. If you can only touch with one foot, practice that technique in a safe area; do not select a motorcycle solely because a brochure number looks reassuring.

On Ducati USA’s model-family listings checked October 13, 2026, the Hypermotard 698 Mono is shown at $13,995 and the Panigale V2 at $16,995. The $3,000 difference is a web-listed US price gap, not a final purchase quote. Destination charges, setup, taxes, registration, dealer fees, insurance and riding equipment can materially change the amount you spend.

Use the prices as a starting point for deciding whether the Panigale’s additional performance and lower seat justify its premium for your use. If you are financing, compare the total cost and term rather than looking only at a monthly payment. If you are paying cash, obtain written, itemized quotes for the same model year and equipment level.
Why model year and country matter
Ducati’s US pages are the basis for the figures above, but a motorcycle sold in another country or in a different model year may have different equipment, certification details or pricing. Currency conversion is not a reliable substitute for a local price because taxes, shipping, homologation and dealer margins differ.
Confirm the exact model name on the vehicle identification paperwork, the included equipment, warranty terms and whether listed accessories are factory-installed or optional. Ask the dealer to identify any price change since the web page was checked. This is especially important when a family page displays more than one trim or when a dealer has a previous model year in stock.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Which rider should choose the Hypermotard 698 Mono?
- Choose the Mono when upright, motard-style riding is the main attraction. Its format is the reason to buy it; the lower price and lighter listed mass are supporting benefits.
- Choose it when low mass matters in daily handling. Moving a motorcycle around a driveway, parking area or tight urban space can be easier with less weight, although technique still matters.
- Choose it when you prefer moderate published output. The engine offers less peak power and torque than the Panigale, which may make it easier to use within your own comfort zone on public roads.
- Choose it only after checking the tall seat. The lower weight does not make the Mono automatically suitable for a shorter rider. Verify the standard seat and listed low-seat options in person.
The Mono is a poor match if your main goal is a low seat, aerodynamic sportbike posture or the strongest acceleration Ducati offers in this pair. Buying it and immediately trying to recreate the Panigale experience would leave you paying for the wrong design.
Which rider should choose the Panigale V2?
- Choose the Panigale when a fully faired sportbike is the destination. Its bodywork and riding position are central to the experience, not cosmetic extras added to a standard motorcycle.
- Choose it when the published output reserve matters. The V2 has the higher power and torque figures, giving experienced riders more headroom for fast-road or track use.
- Choose it when the lower seat improves your fit. The listed height is lower than the Mono’s, but confirm reach and knee comfort on the actual motorcycle.
- Choose it when you accept the extra cost and mass. You pay more on the checked US listing and manage a heavier machine, so the sportbike format should be something you actively want.
The Panigale is a poor match if most of your riding involves cramped urban maneuvering, frequent standing on the pegs or a preference for an open, upright view. A lower seat alone cannot compensate for a posture that you find uncomfortable.
Use case decisions: a practical way to choose
Mostly city streets and short rides
Start by evaluating steering effort at walking pace, heat and wrist or back comfort during repeated stops. The Mono’s upright concept and lower listed mass may suit this pattern better, but do not infer a complete urban verdict from specifications alone. Sit on both bikes in normal riding gear and ask about low-speed demonstration rides where legal.

Twisty public roads
Decide whether you enjoy an upright motard rhythm or a tucked-in sportbike position. The Mono can appeal to riders who value quick-feeling direction changes at sensible road speeds, while the Panigale appeals to riders who want more engine reserve and a sportbike cockpit. Neither preference is objectively faster without controlled testing, and no such comparative test is established for these models here.

Track days
The Panigale’s higher published output and fully faired sportbike format make it the more natural starting point for a rider whose priority is track-oriented performance. The Mono can still be the right choice for someone who specifically wants a lightweight supermoto-style experience. Before a track event, confirm noise limits, tire requirements, safety equipment and the organizer’s technical rules for your exact motorcycle.
Longer highway stretches
Consider wind exposure, posture and luggage needs rather than engine output alone. A fairing may reduce direct wind pressure, but a sportbike posture can load your wrists or hips. An upright motorcycle may be comfortable at moderate speeds yet expose more of your body to airflow. Take a realistic test ride and check whether the manufacturer or aftermarket luggage solution you need is compatible with the exact model year.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the published specifications cannot answer
The available official information does not establish a measured head-to-head lap time, acceleration result, fuel-economy comparison or independently tested real-world range. Do not treat the power, torque, weight and seat figures as substitutes for those measurements. They are useful for narrowing your choice, not for proving that one Ducati wins every situation.
They also do not settle questions such as vibration at a particular rpm, heat in traffic, wind protection, service experience, tire life or long-distance comfort. Those are rider- and condition-dependent factors that require a properly conducted test ride, owner experience from the same model year or a documented independent test. If a dealer makes a performance claim, ask what test method and configuration produced it.
2026 variant context: the Hypermotard 698 Mono Nera
On May 14, 2026, Ducati announced the Hypermotard 698 Mono Nera. Ducati Media House said European Ducati dealers would begin receiving it in June 2026, with a European starting price of €13,990. That announcement is not a US price for the standard Mono, and European availability does not establish availability in every market.

The announcement also described Ducati Performance accessories for the Nera, including machined components, a license-plate holder, racing seats and footpegs, and mentioned test rides and DRE Road riding courses. Treat those details as variant-specific until Ducati or a dealer confirms compatibility with the standard 698 Mono in your country. Do not add the European Nera price to a US purchase budget or assume that a special edition has the same equipment as the regular model.
Panigale V2 generation and accessory context
Ducati’s November 5, 2024 launch announcement introduced the 2025-generation Panigale V2 and Streetfighter V2. It mentioned optional accessories such as cruise control, turn-by-turn navigation, USB power and a tire-pressure sensor. Those launch references explain the generation’s original context, but launch pricing is historical; use the current Ducati USA family listing for a present-day US price and confirm equipment before signing a purchase order.
Accessory availability can vary by trim, market and model year. Ask for a written list showing what is standard on the motorcycle in front of you, what is optional, and whether installation affects warranty or service intervals. A low-seat, electronic accessory or track component should be evaluated for fit and compatibility rather than assumed from a press announcement.
A buyer’s checklist before choosing
- Define the riding format. Write down whether you want an upright motard, a fully faired sportbike or are undecided. If you are undecided, schedule back-to-back dealer appointments.
- Check physical fit. Wear your normal boots and riding clothes. Test both feet-down and one-foot-down stops, bar reach, knee bend and the effort needed to move the motorcycle without assistance.
- Compare the exact motorcycle. Record model year, trim, seat option, installed accessories and vehicle identification number. Do not compare a special edition with a standard model as though they were identical.
- Request an itemized quote. Separate the listed motorcycle price from destination, setup, taxes, registration, freight, accessories and finance charges.
- Plan training and protection. Match your instruction and protective equipment to the motorcycle’s capability. A higher-output sportbike deserves a deliberate skills plan, not just a larger budget.
- Arrange a legal test ride. Evaluate clutch control, low-speed balance, posture, braking feel and visibility on the roads you actually use. A short ride cannot answer every durability or ownership question, but it can expose an obvious fit problem.
- Recheck availability. Ducati’s web pages and dealer inventory change. Confirm price, delivery timing, warranty and parts support immediately before payment.
Verdict: match the Ducati to the reason you ride
Buy the Hypermotard 698 Mono if the essential appeal is a light, tall, upright motard with a single-cylinder engine and a lower listed US price. Buy the Panigale V2 if you specifically want a faired sportbike, need the lower listed seat or value its much higher published power and torque enough to accept additional mass and cost.
The most reliable decision is made in this order: choose the riding format, verify your physical fit, compare the exact market and model year, then use the specification and price gap to confirm the choice. That process produces a bike that is better for your roads and habits, even though neither Ducati is the universal winner.
