Choose the Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono for an upright, tall-seat supermoto experience; choose the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R for a fully faired supersport layout. There is no objective winner because these motorcycles solve different riding problems. Ducati’s 698 Mono is a single-cylinder road-going supermotard, while the ZX-6R is a 636 cc inline-four Ninja supersport. Your decision should start with posture, roads, rider fit, model year, market and exact trim—not a headline horsepower or weight number.
These are different kinds of motorcycles
A comparison makes sense only after separating the formats. Ducati describes the Hypermotard 698 Mono as its first single-cylinder, road-going supermotard. Its design brief is compact, upright and visually related to a dirt-track or supermoto machine, but it is registered and equipped for road use. Kawasaki places the Ninja ZX-6R in its supersport range. The current U.S. specification uses a 636 cc inline-four engine, a full fairing and a forward-leaning sportbike riding position.

That distinction changes nearly every practical question. A supermotard asks you to sit tall, look over traffic and move your body around a narrow motorcycle. A supersport asks you to work with a low, aerodynamic cockpit and a chassis intended for fast paved-road or circuit riding. Neither format is automatically more comfortable, easier or faster for every rider. The right choice depends on the job you want the motorcycle to do.
| Comparison point | Hypermotard 698 Mono | Ninja ZX-6R |
|---|---|---|
| Basic format | Road-going supermotard | Ninja supersport |
| Engine layout | Single-cylinder | Inline-four |
| Displacement | 659 cc | 636 cc in Kawasaki’s current U.S. model description |
| Riding position | Upright motard layout with a tall seat | Fully faired supersport layout; verify local specification and fit in person |
| Best starting question | Do you want a light-feeling, tall, supermoto-style road bike? | Do you want a faired sportbike for paved-road and track use? |
This is a format comparison, not a claim that one motorcycle wins a drag race, lap-time test or comfort test. No independent head-to-head road or track test was established for these exact versions, so acceleration, cornering speed, reliability rankings and personal comfort should not be presented as measured differences.

Engine and output: read the numbers in context
Hypermotard 698 Mono figures
Ducati’s current product specifications list a 659 cc single-cylinder engine producing 77.5 hp at 9,750 rpm and 63 Nm (46.5 lb-ft) at 8,000 rpm. Ducati lists a 151 kg (333 lb) figure without fuel. These are manufacturer specifications for the current product page, accessed in 2026; they are not an independent dyno result.
The single-cylinder architecture is part of the 698 Mono’s identity. It keeps the engine concept distinct from the ZX-6R’s four-cylinder supersport design and supports the narrow, upright supermoto format. Do not translate the displacement or peak-output figures directly into a universal ranking. The way either engine delivers power, the gearing, aerodynamics, rider position and road all affect what you experience.
ZX-6R displacement and output
Kawasaki’s current U.S. description identifies a 636 cc inline-four ZX-6R. The official specification excerpts available for this comparison do not establish a directly comparable peak-horsepower or torque figure for the relevant local year and market. Use the technical sheet for the exact country, emissions version and model year before placing a Kawasaki output number beside Ducati’s 77.5 hp.
Recommended Free Tools
This is important because a 2025 U.S. specification, a 2026 U.S. specification and a non-U.S. motorcycle may differ in emissions equipment, calibration and published measurement. A third-party number without the same test method and market would create a false precision. If a dealer quotes a power figure, ask whether it is crank horsepower, rear-wheel horsepower or a manufacturer claim.
Why engine size is not a winner metric
- The Ducati has the larger displacement on paper, at 659 cc versus 636 cc, but cylinder count and engine design are different.
- Ducati’s published output includes both the peak horsepower and the engine speed at which it occurs. A peak number does not describe every part of the rev range.
- Kawasaki’s exact output should come from the local official sheet for the motorcycle you can buy.
- Use intended riding, gearing, throttle response and ergonomics as decision criteria rather than assuming that a larger number guarantees a better motorcycle.
Weight: the labels are not interchangeable
The Ducati specification calls its 151 kg (333 lb) figure a weight without fuel. Kawasaki’s U.S. documents use different labels in different model years. The 2025 sheet gives curb weights; the 2026 result gives estimated dry weights. A dry figure normally excludes more consumables than a curb figure, so subtracting one from the other does not produce a meaningful real-world comparison.

| Motorcycle and source year | Measurement label | Non-ABS | ABS | Market qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hypermotard 698 Mono, Ducati current specification | Without fuel | 151 kg (333 lb) | Same published figure; Ducati page does not separate an ABS weight in the cited specification | Confirm local version |
| ZX-6R, 2025 | Curb weight | 432.2 lb | 436.6 lb | 50-state U.S. models |
| ZX-6R, 2025 | Curb weight | 430.0 lb | 434.4 lb | 49-state U.S. models |
| ZX-6R, 2026 | Estimated dry weight | 390.3 lb | 394.7 lb | 50-state U.S. models |
| ZX-6R, 2026 | Estimated dry weight | 388.1 lb | 392.5 lb | 49-state U.S. models |
The table shows why a simple statement such as the Ducati is lighter than the Kawasaki would be incomplete. Ducati’s number excludes fuel, while Kawasaki’s 2025 number includes the motorcycle in curb condition and Kawasaki’s 2026 number uses an estimated dry basis. ABS equipment also changes Kawasaki’s listed figure. Compare motorcycles only after matching year, market, ABS status and measurement basis.
Ergonomics and rider fit
Ducati seat-height options
The Hypermotard 698 Mono has a 904 mm (35.6 in) standard seat height. Ducati lists 889 mm (35.0 in) with its low seat and 849 mm (33.4 in) when the low seat is combined with the low suspension kit. Those are useful fit numbers, but they do not predict whether you can balance the motorcycle comfortably. Inseam length, boot sole, suspension sag and the width of the seat at its front all matter.

It can be a disadvantage when stopping on uneven ground, backing into a parking space or carrying a passenger. Sit on the standard motorcycle before ordering accessories, then test the low-seat configuration if you need more reach. The low suspension kit changes more than the seat number, so ask the dealer how it affects suspension setup and ground clearance.
ZX-6R posture
The ZX-6R’s supersport layout places the rider behind a fairing and over the front of the motorcycle. The exact seat-height figure for your market should be taken from Kawasaki’s local technical sheet rather than assumed from a U.S. listing. More important than a single millimeter measurement is the relationship between seat, clip-on handlebars, foot controls and tank. A rider who likes a tucked-in, aerodynamic position may prefer that arrangement; another rider may find it demanding during slow urban riding.
Do a fit check before comparing comfort. Turn the bars from lock to lock, reach the clutch and front-brake levers, place both feet on the pegs and hold the riding position for several minutes. Check whether your wrists carry your weight, whether your knees sit naturally against the tank and whether you can move your feet securely when stopped. These checks reveal more than a generic label such as comfortable or aggressive.

Which is easier to handle?
Ease of handling is rider- and situation-dependent. The Ducati’s upright format and published no-fuel weight suit the idea of a compact, supermoto-style machine, but the 904 mm seat can make low-speed balance harder for a shorter rider. The Kawasaki’s fairing and supersport posture may feel natural at speed yet less relaxed in traffic. Neither conclusion is a measured test result. Arrange a supervised test ride or a static fit appointment in the exact trim you plan to buy.
Electronics and equipment vary by version
Hypermotard 698 Mono aids
Ducati describes four riding modes and a package of electronic controls that includes cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control, wheelie control and engine-brake management. The global product information lists Standard, RVE and Nera versions, while the U.S. page retrieved for this comparison identifies Standard and RVE. Equipment therefore depends on market and trim.
Quick-shift equipment needs particular attention. Ducati’s earlier launch material described Ducati Quick Shift as an accessory on the Standard version and standard on the RVE, while the current global product page presents quick shift up/down equipment by version. Confirm the exact build sheet rather than assuming that every 698 Mono has the same up-and-down quickshifter. Ask whether the quoted motorcycle includes the accessory, whether it shifts in both directions and whether the warranty covers the installed kit.
ZX-6R aids in the 2025 U.S. excerpt
Kawasaki’s 2025 U.S. specification excerpt lists Kawasaki Traction Control, Full and Low power modes, Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System on ABS versions and Kawasaki Quick Shifter for upshifts. The presence of KIBS and the listed weight depend on the ABS version. A quickshifter described as upshift-only is not equivalent to a system that also performs clutchless downshifts.
Do not compare feature names without checking operation. Ask the dealer which riding modes alter power delivery, whether traction control is adjustable while riding, whether ABS can be changed, and whether the quickshifter works below a specified engine speed. Those details can matter more than the number of electronic functions on a brochure.

Street, highway and track priorities
Urban and mixed-road riding
The Hypermotard’s upright supermoto format is the logical shortlist for a rider who spends most of the time in town, on tight back roads or on routes where visibility and frequent direction changes matter. That is a format-based recommendation, not a claim of measured superiority. The tall seat and limited wind protection should be evaluated during a real fit and road assessment.
The ZX-6R makes more sense when your idea of street riding includes sustained paved-road speed, a fairing and a conventional supersport cockpit. The fairing can change wind exposure, but local traffic, speed limits and rider posture still determine whether that arrangement suits you. Neither motorcycle should be purchased solely for commuting convenience without considering heat, luggage, passenger needs and maintenance access.
Track days
The ZX-6R’s supersport format is the more natural starting point for a rider whose priority is a fully faired sportbike and whose local track rules or riding school are built around that category. The Hypermotard may appeal to someone specifically seeking a supermoto-style track experience. Track suitability still depends on tires, suspension setup, controls, safety equipment and the circuit; no lap-time comparison is established here.
Long-distance use and passengers
Neither motorcycle should be assumed to be a touring or passenger specialist from these specifications alone. Check the owner’s manual and local equipment list for passenger provisions, luggage options, payload and service requirements. The Ducati’s tall, upright layout and the Kawasaki’s supersport cockpit create different starting points, but a multi-hour route is the only reliable way to judge your own tolerance for wind, wrist angle, seat shape and leg bend.
How to choose by rider profile
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Verify before buying |

| A fully faired supersport cockpit | Ninja ZX-6R | Local seat and handlebar fit, ABS version and model-year specification |
| Lowest possible purchase price | Neither can be selected from the available figures | Obtain current local MSRP, dealer fees, taxes and inventory for the same year and version |
| Simple weight comparison | Neither should be chosen from an unaligned number | Match fuel state, ABS status, market and measurement label |

Country, model year and trim checklist
Prices and equipment were not established for a specific country in the available official material. Before making a value judgment, collect comparable quotes for the same calendar model year and configuration. A U.S. 49-state ZX-6R is not the same specification as a 50-state model, and a global Ducati trim list is not automatically the U.S. equipment list.

Common comparison mistakes
Treating the motorcycles as direct substitutes
Calling one motorcycle better without stating the intended riding format hides the main decision. Start by choosing between a road supermotard and a supersport. Only then compare the details that matter for your route and body.
Mixing model years
A 2025 ZX-6R curb-weight figure cannot be placed beside a 2026 estimated-dry figure as if they describe the same condition. Keep a spreadsheet or quotation sheet with year, market, ABS status and measurement label in separate columns.
Assuming all Ducati 698 Mono equipment is identical
Standard, RVE and Nera references differ by market, and quickshift availability has been described differently across Ducati materials. Read the local build sheet, not only a global product page.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Using seat height as the whole fit test
Reach is only one part of fit. Evaluate seat width, suspension sag, boots, handlebar reach, foot-control position and your ability to move the motorcycle while stopped. A lower accessory seat does not remove every fit issue.
Declaring a value winner without a location
Current MSRP, dealer inventory and insurance were not established for a target market. A defensible value comparison requires same-country, same-year quotes with all mandatory fees shown.
A practical showroom decision process
- Bring the riding gear and boots you normally use. Clothing and footwear can change your reach to the ground and controls.
- Perform a stationary fit check on the standard Ducati and the exact ZX-6R version. Hold each position for several minutes rather than judging from a brief sit.
- Ask the dealer to identify ABS equipment, riding modes, traction-control adjustments and quickshifter direction on the motorcycle in front of you.
- Inspect the VIN or model-year documentation and match it to the quoted specification sheet.
- Request written prices for the motorcycle, required setup, accessories and registration. Keep optional low-seat, suspension and quickshift items separate.
- Take a legal, supervised test ride if available. Record only your own observations about reach, wrist load, visibility, clutch feel, wind and low-speed balance; do not treat them as universal test results.
Accessories that affect the decision
The most decision-relevant Ducati accessory in this comparison is the low-seat and low-suspension combination because it changes the published seat-height options from 904 mm to 889 mm with the low seat, or 849 mm with both low seat and low suspension kit. Confirm compatibility, local stock, installation cost and how the suspension kit changes setup before ordering.
Ducati also names model-specific accessories such as a racing seat, motard footrests, sliders and engine-case covers. Those items belong in a fit or track setup discussion, not in the base-bike price. Availability and compatibility vary by market. Kawasaki equipment should be evaluated from the local accessory catalog and owner’s manual rather than assumed from the Ducati list.

Verdict: choose the format first
The Hypermotard 698 Mono is the coherent choice when you want Ducati’s 659 cc single-cylinder road supermotard, accept a 904 mm standard seat and value an upright, compact riding concept. The ZX-6R is the coherent choice when you want Kawasaki’s 636 cc inline-four Ninja supersport, a full fairing and a sportbike posture. If you are undecided, do not let the 77.5 hp Ducati figure or any isolated Kawasaki weight number settle the question. Match the exact year and market, sit on both motorcycles, verify the trim and obtain local prices before deciding.
