A drum brake slows a wheel when curved shoes press their friction linings against the inside of a rotating drum. The basic friction pair is simple; the parts that push the shoes outward vary by brake design and vehicle. For safe inspection or replacement, use the vehicle’s specifications rather than assuming a universal drum size, lining limit, or service interval.
How does a drum brake work?
The drum is attached to and turns with the wheel. Inside it, two curved brake shoes sit against a backing plate. When braking is applied, the shoes move outward and their linings press against the drum’s inner surface. Friction between the lining and drum slows the drum and wheel. When braking is released, springs retract the shoes so they are out of contact with the drum.
In a common hydraulic passenger-vehicle arrangement, a wheel cylinder pushes the shoes outward. An adjuster helps maintain the intended shoe-to-drum clearance as the linings wear. The exact layout and actuation depend on the vehicle.
Heavy-vehicle air brakes use different actuation hardware. Depending on the design, an air-brake drum assembly may use a cam or wedge and a slack adjuster rather than a passenger-car hydraulic wheel cylinder. Ontario’s Official Air Brake Handbook describes the functional contact rule: the lining contacts the drum when the brake is applied and is out of contact when released.

What parts are inside a drum brake?
- Drum: Rotates with the wheel and provides the inner friction surface.
- Brake shoes and linings: Curved supports carrying friction material that presses against the drum.
- Backing plate: Supports the brake components behind the drum.
- Return and hold-down springs: Keep components in position and retract the shoes when braking is released.
- Adjuster: Maintains appropriate shoe-to-drum clearance.
- Wheel cylinder: In hydraulic designs, applies force to the shoes.
Air-brake assemblies use their own actuation components, which can include a slack adjuster and cam or wedge. Parts and procedures are not interchangeable across architectures.
What are the main drum brake types?
Akebono identifies three common arrangements: leading/trailing shoe, twin-leading shoe, and duo-servo. They differ in how the shoes are actuated and pressed against the drum. The manufacturer’s overview names the types but does not establish a universal performance ranking among them.

| Arrangement | What distinguishes it | Vehicle application, service procedure, and fitment |
|---|---|---|
| Leading/trailing shoe | A named shoe arrangement; shoe action differs from the other types. | Vehicle- and axle-specific; confirm using the applicable service information. |
| Twin-leading shoe | A named arrangement with a different way of pressing the shoes against the drum. | Vehicle- and axle-specific; confirm using the applicable service information. |
| Duo-servo | A named arrangement with different shoe force transfer and actuation. | Vehicle- and axle-specific; confirm using the applicable service information. |
The available technical description does not provide directly comparable performance figures or support the claim that one arrangement is always better. Identify the design fitted to the vehicle before selecting parts or following a service procedure.
What should be checked during drum brake service?
Drum service involves more than looking at the lining. Hyundai Motor America’s 2021 brake service recommendations, hosted by NHTSA, advise cleaning components for inspection, removing surface contamination before measurement, and measuring drum inside diameter and runout before and after machining. The applicable vehicle shop manual supplies the service limits.

- Drum: Check the friction surface for damage and measure inside diameter and runout as specified. If machining is performed, measure again afterward.
- Shoes and lining: Inspect lining thickness, condition, attachment, and shoe structure. The applicable specifications determine whether the parts remain serviceable.
- Springs and related hardware: Inspect for damage, wear, or parts that are not securely fitted.
- Wheel cylinder, where fitted: Look for actual fluid leakage. Debris on the cylinder or boots alone does not prove a leak.
For commercial-vehicle drum brakes, Meritor’s NHTSA-hosted 2013 brake inspection and maintenance guidance calls for checking friction surfaces for grooving, scoring, bluing, and heat checks; measuring wear or out-of-round; and inspecting shoes, springs, rollers, anchors, and related hardware. It also recommends matching drums and linings across both wheels on an axle. Those recommendations are for commercial vehicles; do not apply their dimensions or intervals to a passenger vehicle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you know whether a drum is within its limit?
Use the limit applicable to the vehicle and the drum. Hyundai’s service guidance points to the vehicle shop manual for service limits. Separately, U.S. federal in-use inspection criteria in 49 CFR § 570.5 say that a drum embossed with a maximum safe diameter must remain within that dimension; if it is not embossed, it must meet manufacturer specifications. The regulation also addresses lining thickness, cracks or breaks, secure attachment, and sound mechanical parts. These are federal in-use inspection criteria, not a universal repair specification, and state inspection requirements depend on adoption of the relevant criteria.

How should you choose replacement parts?
Drums, shoes, and hardware must match the vehicle’s actual configuration. Check the year, make, model, and axle, and verify fitment against reliable vehicle-specific parts information before ordering. The same care applies to service instructions: a drum diameter, lining threshold, adjustment method, or replacement interval from one vehicle cannot safely be assumed to apply to another.
