You can drive in Greece on a valid licence issued by another EU country, provided you meet the conditions for the corresponding licence category. For non-EU licences, the rules are not settled by the guidance cited here: check current official advice for your licence-issuing country and confirm requirements with your rental company and insurer before travelling. On the road, follow posted signs, wear seat belts, secure children in suitable restraints, and never drive impaired.
Can I drive in Greece with my licence?
EU-issued licences
A valid driving licence issued by another EU country remains valid in Greece, provided its holder meets the conditions for the corresponding Greek licence category. The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport sets out this rule on its driving licence validity page, last updated on 27 June 2022.
Licences issued outside the EU
The EU licence rule does not establish what every non-EU visitor needs. Before travelling, check current official guidance for the country that issued your licence, and ask both the rental provider and your insurer which documents they require.
Do I need an international driving permit in Greece?
The available official guidance does not establish a universal answer for visitors with non-EU licences. Whether you need an international driving permit depends on the applicable requirements for your licence and circumstances. Verify this with current official guidance and your rental company before departure; do not assume a permit is either always required or never required.

What road rules should I know before driving?
The European Commission’s Greece road rules and safety page summarizes speed limits, alcohol limits, seat belts, child restraints, helmets, mobile-phone use and penalties. It was last checked on 1 October 2026. Read the current guidance for your vehicle category and obey signs on the road.
- Seat belts: Wear a seat belt where fitted and ensure passengers do too.
- Children: Use an appropriate child restraint and secure children properly. The Hellenic Police also emphasizes this in its road-safety guidance.
- Speed: Observe the limit for the road and vehicle you are driving, and follow posted signs where they specify a different limit. There is no single speed figure that applies to every road and vehicle.
- Alcohol and drugs: Do not drive after drinking or using drugs that could impair you. The Hellenic Police highlights avoiding impaired driving as a core safety rule.
- Mobile phones: Do not use a phone while driving unless using permitted hands-free equipment. Check the current country rules for the precise restrictions.
- Motorcycles and mopeds: Check the current helmet requirements if your trip includes riding one.
What should I check before renting a car?
Rental policies vary, so confirm the terms for your specific booking rather than relying on a general rule. In particular, check:
- Which licence and, if applicable, international permit the company accepts.
- Minimum driver age and how long you must have held your licence.
- What insurance is included, what exclusions apply, and the excess you could owe.
- Deposit amount and payment requirements.
- Whether you may take the car across borders or on a ferry, and any prior approval required.
- How tolls are charged if the vehicle has a transponder or other toll arrangement.
Greek government vehicle information includes motor-vehicle insurance, but it does not establish what a rental contract covers or what a visitor’s own policy will pay. Review the actual insurance terms and rental agreement before driving.
What if I am bringing my own vehicle?
For short-term travel, do not confuse tourist use of a foreign-registered vehicle with the separate rules for establishing habitual residence in Greece. The Greek government says people habitually resident in Greece who transfer a vehicle into the country cannot use it there before any taxes due have been paid, a registration certificate has been issued and Greek plates have been issued. This is a residency and registration rule, not a general instruction for every tourist with a foreign-registered car. See the government’s residency requirements for registering a vehicle from another EU Member State.

Are there toll roads in Greece?
Toll services are part of Greece’s travel infrastructure. The government’s travel services page includes toll-station services, including a free toll pass for permanent residents. It does not establish current toll prices, payment methods for visitors or charges for using a rental car’s toll device. Check the relevant toll operator and your rental provider shortly before travelling, especially if you plan a long-distance route.
What should I know about driving on islands and tourist routes?
A Greek government announcement dated 30 July 2026 describes a road-safety information initiative that addresses road-code basics and driving conditions on islands and popular tourist destinations. It supports checking local conditions and your intended route, but it does not establish specific road layouts, surfaces, hazards or seasonal conditions. Look for current, location-specific information before setting out, and leave room in your plans for conditions that may vary along the route.

A car can offer flexibility, but the useful comparison is your full trip rather than the rental price alone. Consider whether a car suits the places you plan to visit, then weigh rental, fuel, insurance, parking and tolls against other ways of getting there. Also consider how comfortable you are with local conditions and whether the route makes driving worthwhile.
