A modified Maserati MC20 Coupé reached a reported 197.7 mph (318 km/h) with no human driver onboard, setting a new absolute autonomous-car speed record, Maserati announced on March 3, 2025. The run took place at Kennedy Space Center’s Space Florida Launch and Landing Facility in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
How fast did the driverless Maserati go?
Maserati reported a top speed of 197.7 mph (318 km/h). Its announcement described the result as an absolute autonomous-car speed record, surpassing the previous 192.8 mph mark set in April 2022 by the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) AV-21 racecar at the same facility. Maserati’s March 3, 2025 announcement does not state how the speed was timed, whether it was independently certified, or which homologation standard applied.
Where and how did the run happen?
The attempt took place during 1000 Miglia Experience Florida at Kennedy Space Center’s Space Florida Launch and Landing Facility. Maserati describes the runway as 15,000 feet (2.8 miles) long and notes that it was used as a Space Shuttle landing site. The MC20 was modified for autonomous operation and ran without a human driver onboard.
Was it a regular production MC20?
No. This was a modified MC20 used by the Indy Autonomous Challenge, not an unmodified road car using consumer driver-assistance features. The distinction matters: the record is for an autonomous challenge vehicle, not a production MC20 driven at speed by its standard road-car systems. At the production car’s 2020 launch, Stellantis listed 630 horsepower and a top speed above 325 km/h; those figures describe the production model, not the modified record configuration. How does this differ from the MC20’s earlier autonomous record?
The same MC20 had previously been credited by Maserati with a separate autonomous production-car record: 285 km/h (177 mph) at Piacenza Military Airport in November 2024. That was a different category from the 2025 absolute autonomous-car record, which followed the 192.8 mph IAC AV-21 run and used a modified challenge vehicle.

The table’s figures and category descriptions are reported in Maserati’s 2025 announcement. They should not be treated as directly interchangeable with conventional, human-driven land-speed records, which may use different categories and measurement rules.

Who developed the AI driver?
The AI-driver software was developed by PoliMOVE-MSU, a team within AIDA (Artificial Intelligence Driving Autonomous) at Politecnico di Milano. The university also identifies PoliMOVE-MSU as the software team behind the result. Politecnico di Milano’s account

What the record does—and does not—show
The run demonstrates a high-speed autonomous vehicle operating in a controlled facility. The announcements frame the effort as autonomous-driving research and technology development; they do not establish that this system is ready for ordinary public roads. Maserati’s reported speed is clear, but the available official accounts do not specify an independent timing or certification method.
