Driven: 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X Duramax—Is It the Ultimate Go-Anywhere Luxury Truck?

The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X Duramax is one of the most convincing luxury/off-road truck compromises, but it is not the best Sierra for maximum towing, payload, or tight trails. We break down the LZ0 diesel, AT4X versus Denali Ultimate, fuel economy, ownership requirements, and used-buying checks.

Short answer: almost—but only if “ultimate” means the best compromise between genuine trail hardware, diesel range, towing utility, and an upscale cabin. The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X with the 3.0-liter Duramax is the most convincing version of that idea. It combines a factory two-inch lift, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear electronic lockers, 33-inch mud-terrain tires, massaging leather seats, and a large digital cockpit in one full-size pickup.

This article centers on the 2024 Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition: Crew Cab, short bed, four-wheel drive, the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel with RPO code LZ0, and a 10-speed automatic. MotorTrend tested that configuration at $88,585 and recorded a 6,137-pound test weight. It is not representative of every diesel Sierra. A lower-trim diesel can tow more, a Denali Ultimate is more road-focused and luxurious, and a gas Sierra may be the smarter choice for frequent short trips. As of August 10, 2026, a 2024 model is also primarily a used-truck purchase, so condition and VIN-specific equipment matter more than its original window sticker.

The verdict: the AT4X is the go-anywhere luxury compromise, not the best Sierra at everything

GMC offers the 2024 Sierra 1500 in Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate forms. Calling all of them “the 2024 Sierra diesel” hides major differences in suspension, tires, payload, towing, price, and fuel economy. The official Sierra brochure is the essential reference when comparing a specific truck.

The AT4X is the right answer for a buyer who wants to leave pavement regularly without giving up a quiet, well-equipped daily driver. Its hardware is substantive rather than cosmetic: locking differentials, specialized dampers, low range, skid plates, and aggressive tires all serve a purpose. Its diesel is smooth and relaxed on the highway, and its cabin has enough leather, technology, seat adjustment, and massage function to make long journeys easy.

  • RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: In the unpredictable world of off-roading, choosing X-BULL is an error-free choice. This off-road recovery kit offers a complete solution to ensure you are never left stranded or unprepared. With high-quality components that cover every aspect of recovery—from towing and stabilization to storage and protection—this kit is your best defense against the unexpected.

But the same equipment creates compromises. The truck is wide, heavy, tall, and cumbersome on tight trails. Mud-terrain tires create noise and rolling resistance. The lifted suspension and added equipment reduce payload and towing capacity. The AT4X is not the best choice for maximum trailer weight, maximum cargo, narrow technical trails, or the softest luxury-car ride.

Best summary: choose the AT4X Duramax for the strongest off-road/luxury balance, the Denali Ultimate Duramax for predominantly paved travel, the AT4 Duramax for better value and less extreme hardware, and a lower-trim diesel Sierra for maximum towing. Choose gas if your life consists mostly of short trips and low annual mileage.

Which 2024 Sierra 1500 diesel is this?

The vehicle evaluated here is the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition, configured as follows:

Item Test configuration
Trim AT4X AEV Edition
Cab and bed Crew Cab, short bed
Drivetrain Four-wheel drive
Engine 3.0-liter turbocharged Duramax inline-six, RPO LZ0
Transmission 10-speed automatic
Off-road tires 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires
Test weight 6,137 pounds
As-tested price $88,585 in MotorTrend’s test

That $88,585 figure is a historical as-tested price, not a current new-vehicle price. In 2026, buyers should treat any 2024 Sierra as a used vehicle and compare actual asking prices based on mileage, region, accident history, service records, options, and condition. Do not assume that an advertised “AT4X diesel” includes AEV equipment, Super Cruise, a head-up display, a rear camera mirror, power-retractable steps, an active exhaust, or a CarbonPro bed. Confirm the window sticker or build sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The standard AT4X and AT4X AEV Edition are related but not identical. The AEV version adds AEV-branded wheels, further skid-plate coverage, an AEV rear bumper, floor liners, headrest logos, and exterior badging. The exact equipment should still be checked against the individual truck. A recovery-oriented bumper should not automatically be described as including a winch.

What changed for 2024?

The most important change is that the Duramax became standard on the AT4X, rather than being an engine choice buyers had to add. GMC also updated the diesel to 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. The 2.7-liter turbocharged gas engine was renamed TurboMax, active exhaust became available on SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate trims, and GMC added wheel choices and Downpour Metallic and Thunderstorm Gray paint colors. The changes are summarized in GMC’s 2024 Sierra announcement.

Technical coverage from Car and Driver attributed the diesel update to revised turbocharger hardware, fuel injectors, steel pistons, and improved thermal management. Those are manufacturer-related engineering changes; they should not be mistaken for an independently measured long-term reliability result.

The 3.0-liter Duramax: exact specifications and real-world character

Specification 2024 Sierra 1500 Duramax
Engine 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel inline-six
Engine code LZ0
Horsepower 305 hp
Torque 495 lb-ft
Transmission 10-speed automatic
Fuel system High-pressure common-rail direct injection
Compression ratio 15.0:1

These figures come from GMC’s official 2024 specifications. The diesel’s appeal is not simply the number printed in the torque column. It delivers its strength in a smooth, quiet, linear manner, and it does so without the clatter and harshness associated with older light-duty diesels. The 10-speed automatic is a natural partner for highway cruising, grades, passing, and trailer work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Professional road-test coverage describes the Duramax as refined and well matched to the transmission. That makes it particularly attractive for long-distance drivers who want effortless progress rather than a dramatic, high-rpm performance experience.

It is important not to turn the diesel’s torque advantage into an unsupported acceleration claim. The available 6.2-liter V8 produces 420 hp and 460 lb-ft, giving it more horsepower even though the Duramax produces more torque. The V8 is the more natural choice for buyers who care about high-rpm response, exhaust sound, or traditional gasoline-truck character. The diesel is the better fit for sustained pulling, relaxed cruising, and fuel economy.

Instrumented performance: what the AEV Edition actually did

MotorTrend’s tested 2024 AT4X AEV Edition achieved the following:

Test Result
0–60 mph 7.7 seconds
Quarter mile 16.0 seconds at 84.0 mph
60–0 mph braking 136 feet
Lateral acceleration 0.69 g
EPA city/highway/combined 19/20/19 mpg

Those numbers belong to the specific AEV Edition tested by MotorTrend. They are not universal figures for every 2024 Sierra diesel. The useful takeaway is that the truck is quick enough and composed enough for normal road use, but its strengths are torque delivery, range, and traction—not sports-truck acceleration or nimble handling.

Fuel economy: the AT4X pays for its capability

The diesel’s efficiency varies substantially with drivetrain, cab, bed, wheels, tires, axle ratio, and trim. An AT4X Duramax is not the same fuel-economy proposition as a two-wheel-drive work-oriented Sierra diesel.

  • AT4X Duramax: 19 city, 20 highway, and 19 combined mpg in the tested configuration.
  • AT4 Duramax: Edmunds lists 21 city, 23 highway, and 22 combined mpg for its applicable trim-specific configuration.
  • Other 2024 diesel Sierras: U.S. Department of Energy data shows the 2WD diesel at up to 25 mpg and 4WD diesel configurations ranging from 19 to 24 mpg, depending on configuration.

The relevant number for the lifted, locker-equipped, mud-tire “go-anywhere” truck is 19 mpg combined—not the best-case 2WD figure. Real-world results will also vary with speed, wind, winter fuel, temperature, idling, regeneration events, mountain driving, payload, and trailer aerodynamics. The DOE 2024 vehicle data and Edmunds specifications are useful for comparing configurations, but neither can predict every owner’s consumption.

Better mpg does not automatically mean lower ownership cost. Diesel fuel can cost more, the engine carries an acquisition premium, DEF is required, and emissions-system repairs can be expensive outside warranty. Calculate fuel, DEF, maintenance, insurance, depreciation, and likely ownership period together.

Why the AT4X is a genuine off-roader

The AT4X’s standard hardware gives it a meaningful advantage over cosmetic off-road packages:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Factory-installed two-inch suspension lift.
  • Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers.
  • Front and rear electronic locking differentials.
  • Two-speed AutoTrac transfer case with low range.
  • Terrain Mode for controlled low-speed crawling.
  • AEV-stamped-steel front bumper.
  • Hot-stamped boron-steel front skid plate and additional underbody protection.
  • Recovery-oriented bumpers and recovery hooks.
  • 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires.

GMC details the equipment in its AT4X and AEV Edition specification sheet. Each component changes the truck’s behavior in a different way.

What the hardware does on the trail

DSSV dampers control wheel movement more precisely than conventional dampers and are designed to maintain damping performance through repeated rough-terrain impacts and heat buildup. In practice, they help the truck stay composed over washboard, uneven ledges, and abrupt transitions.

Front and rear lockers can force both wheels on an axle to receive torque when one wheel loses traction. That matters on diagonals, loose climbs, ledges, and uneven rock because the truck is less dependent on a single tire maintaining grip. Lockers do not eliminate the need for careful tire placement or momentum management.

33-inch mud-terrain tires increase loose-surface traction and contribute to clearance, but they are noisier and less efficient on pavement than an all-terrain or highway tire. They can also feel less precise in ordinary cornering and may wear more quickly if alignment and tire pressures are neglected.

The two-inch lift provides more clearance and improves the truck’s ability to approach uneven ground, but it also raises step-in height and center of gravity. The lift does not magically make the Sierra small or improve every towing metric.

Terrain Mode and low range reduce the need for constant accelerator modulation during slow technical work. They are useful tools, not substitutes for a spotter, appropriate tire pressures, recovery equipment, or good judgment.

AT4X AEV Edition versus standard AT4X

The AEV Edition adds more underbody protection and AEV-specific exterior equipment, including AEV wheels, further skid-plate coverage, a rear bumper, floor liners, headrest logos, and exterior badging. The additional equipment is useful for buyers who expect more frequent contact with rocks and rough trail obstacles, but it also adds weight and cost. The AEV package is not required to make the standard AT4X a serious off-roader.

MotorTrend’s AEV test found the truck capable on loose sand, hard-packed dirt, and boulder-oriented terrain. It also found the full-size pickup cumbersome compared with the smaller Canyon AT4X AEV Edition. That is the central reality of this truck: its hardware is excellent, but its size remains a limitation.

Is it really “go-anywhere”?

“Go-anywhere” is marketing language, not a literal promise. The AT4X is well suited to:

  • Snow and poor-weather travel.
  • Forest roads and rough access roads.
  • Desert tracks, sand, and loose dirt.
  • Rocky trails that provide enough width and turning room.
  • Remote campsites, hunting areas, trailheads, and work sites.
  • Towing or carrying recreational equipment over uneven approaches.

It is a poor match for narrow technical trails, tight switchbacks, dense woods, deep side-hills, and severe rock crawling where a smaller and lighter vehicle is easier to place. The Sierra’s width, long wheelbase, weight, broad hood, and expensive bodywork demand more room and more caution. A midsize Canyon AT4X or another smaller off-roader may be objectively more effective in terrain where the Sierra cannot comfortably turn around.

The AT4X can take you farther than an ordinary street-oriented pickup, but “farther” depends on the trail. A vehicle that has excellent traction but cannot fit between trees is not the best vehicle for that route.

Luxury cabin: genuinely upscale, still unmistakably a truck

The AT4X cabin includes the equipment buyers expect from an expensive premium pickup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Heated and ventilated 16-way power front seats.
  • Massage function for the front seats.
  • Full-grain leather seating surfaces.
  • Technical-grain leather accents.
  • Vanta ash wood trim.
  • 13.4-inch infotainment display.
  • 12.3-inch driver-information display.
  • Available 15-inch head-up display.
  • Available rear camera mirror.
  • Bose premium audio.
  • GMC MultiPro tailgate.

The digital layout is one of the Sierra’s strengths. The infotainment system offers Google built-in services along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the large driver display makes it possible to keep towing, navigation, and vehicle information visible without relying on a small central gauge screen. Equipment varies by trim and option package, so verify the specific used truck.

Seat comfort and adjustability are particularly well suited to long-distance driving. The massage function is more than a gimmick on a long highway run, and the Crew Cab provides the space expected in a full-size pickup. The MultiPro tailgate is useful for loading and accessing the bed, although buyers should test every position and confirm that all sections operate correctly on a used truck.

The cabin is not equivalent to a luxury SUV. The Sierra remains a body-on-frame pickup with a tall step-in, a large turning circle, truck-like controls, and considerable road and tire mass. Reviewers have praised the upscale presentation while noting that the ride and some interior details do not match the best luxury vehicles. CarGurus’ model coverage reflects that balance: substantially more premium than a work truck, but not completely isolated from the mechanical character of a full-size pickup.

AT4X versus Denali Ultimate: two different definitions of premium

Priority Better choice Reason
Serious trail use AT4X Lift, DSSV dampers, front and rear lockers, mud tires, and skid plates.
Long highway trips Denali Ultimate More road-focused suspension and tires with a luxury-first presentation.
Maximum cabin luxury Denali Ultimate More elaborate materials, detailing, and road-going equipment.
Low-speed traction AT4X Front and rear electronic locking differentials.
Quiet pavement manners Denali or Denali Ultimate The AT4X’s mud tires and specialized suspension introduce compromises.
Remote-trail confidence AT4X Serious off-road hardware is factory-installed rather than cosmetic.
Narrow trails Neither premium full-size trim A midsize truck or SUV is easier to place and turn around.
Maximum towing Lower-trim Sierra diesel Premium short-bed off-road trims give up capacity to equipment and weight.

The Denali Ultimate adds full-grain leather, Paldao wood trim, massaging 16-way front seats, premium Bose audio, and availability of Super Cruise, a head-up display, and a rear camera mirror. The GMC brochure identifies the applicable trim equipment.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The AT4X is therefore not a Denali Ultimate with extra accessories. The trims optimize for different environments. The Denali Ultimate is the better answer when the truck spends nearly all its time on pavement. The AT4X is the better answer when luxury is important but trail capability is non-negotiable. Super Cruise is driver assistance, not autonomous driving, and requires compatible roads plus an active plan or trial when applicable.

Towing and payload: where the “ultimate” claim breaks down

GMC’s headline diesel tow rating is 13,300 pounds, but that number belongs to a specific configuration: a properly equipped Double Cab, two-wheel-drive Sierra with the Duramax, Max Trailering Package, and 20-inch wheels. It does not describe the AT4X Crew Cab 4WD.

Configuration or rating Maximum cited capacity Important qualification
Range-wide diesel maximum 13,300 lb Double Cab 2WD with Duramax, Max Trailering Package, and 20-inch wheels.
Diesel Crew Cab 4WD short bed Up to 12,900 lb Requires the applicable Max Trailering configuration.
Diesel Double Cab 4WD Up to 13,100 lb Requires the applicable Max Trailering configuration.
Diesel Crew Cab 4WD standard bed Up to 12,500 lb Requires the applicable Max Trailering configuration.
AT4X short-bed configuration 8,700 lb in the relevant GMC table configuration AT4X equipment, tires, and weight materially reduce the envelope.
AT4X AEV Duramax payload 1,380 lb Maximum listed for the Duramax model; individual trucks can differ.

The tow ratings come from GMC’s 2024 trailering and specifications tables, while the 1,380-pound AEV payload figure comes from the AT4X specification sheet.

The AEV Edition is not the Sierra diesel to buy for maximum trailer capacity. Lift components, mud tires, armor, power equipment, luxury appointments, and the AEV package consume weight. The truck may look more capable than a lighter work-oriented Sierra while carrying less cargo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Payload includes the driver, passengers, fuel, tools, camping gear, bed cargo, accessories, and trailer tongue weight. A canopy, winch, steps, skid plates, spare tire, and recovery equipment all reduce what remains. The decisive number for a specific used truck is the payload label on the driver’s door—not the highest number in a brochure.

Diesel ownership: DEF, DPF regeneration, and short-trip reality

The LZ0 is refined, but it is not a maintenance-free economy upgrade. Like other modern diesels, it uses emissions equipment that owners must understand.

The 2024 Duramax diesel supplement warns that extended idling should be avoided because the diesel particulate filter cannot clean itself effectively at idle. Short trips, stop-and-go driving, extended idling, and low-speed operation can prevent successful DPF cleaning.

During an automatic regeneration event, the exhaust sound and idle speed can change. A burning smell and a temporary reduction in fuel economy can be normal. Exhaust temperatures become high enough to burn people or ignite nearby materials, so the truck should not be parked over dry grass, leaves, or other combustible material during or immediately after a regeneration event.

NIXFACE Offroad Recovery Kit for Recover Stuck Vehicle
  • 【OFF ROAD RECOVERY KIT】Towing recovery kit includes 1x tree saver strap (3in x 8ft), 2 x 1/2"x 22" Soft Shackles, 1 x snatch block and 1 x convenient storage bag. Keeping you safe on the road.
  • 【TREE SAVER】 Recovery rope is a perfect must-have for off-road enthusiasts. It can be used as a tree saver, bridle strap, backup tow strap, winch rope extension strap, and even as an emergency recovery tow strap. In case of emergency, it can also be used to remove trees, bushes, and branches. The tree saver winch strap comes with reinforced eye loops and neoprene protector sleeves, doubling the strap's durability and providing protection against cuts and abrasion.
  • 【SOFT SHACKLE】The soft shackle recovery kit is strong enough to hoist a heavy vehicle straight out of the mud. Made of UHMWPE materials, which has 31,400Lbs breaking strength. The diameter of the shackle rope is 3/8"x22". The synthetic soft shackle is durable, light weight and rust-free, which is a good alternative to steel shackles.
  • 【SNATCH BLOCK】 Made of heavy-duty steel with a maximum load of 10 tons (22,000 LBS), compatible with 7/32'' - 3/8'' steel cable or synthetic rope. The snatch block pulley is finished with a durable, corrosion-resistant electrophoretic paint finish, making it anti-corrosion, rust-proof, strong, and durable, suitable for most off-road recovery situations.
  • 【WIDE APPLICATION】This winch recovery kit is very suitable for SUVs, trucks, trailers, tractors, boats, RVs and other vehicles, it is one of the emergency tools that must be applied in the owner's car, and it is a great gift for car owners.

Under suitable conditions, the truck may need approximately 30 minutes of driving to complete an automatic cleaning cycle. Manual regeneration is restricted to vehicles equipped for that function, primarily fleet and commercial applications. If the truck cannot complete cleaning and warning messages are ignored, the DPF may eventually require repair or replacement.

Good diesel use: frequent highway driving, towing, long-distance travel, high annual mileage, and regular operation at full operating temperature.

Questionable diesel use: school runs, repeated short trips, low annual mileage, heavy idling, and an owner who cannot conveniently obtain diesel fuel or DEF.

Never ignore DEF warnings or emissions-system faults. On a used truck, review records for DEF-system problems, check-engine warnings, software updates, and emissions repairs. Online owner anecdotes can help identify possible failure modes, but they cannot establish a failure rate or prove that the LZ0 is universally reliable or unreliable.

Safety and recall checks for a used 2024 Sierra diesel

A 2025 NHTSA recall, 25V-274, covers certain 2021–2024 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks equipped with the 6.2-liter L87 gasoline V8. The NHTSA report explicitly excludes vehicles equipped with other engines, so that specific recall does not apply to the 3.0-liter Duramax.

A separate late-2024 GM diesel-transmission recall covered certain 2020–2022 vehicles, not 2024 Sierra 1500 models. Neither fact eliminates the need for a VIN check. Recall status depends on production date, equipment, repair completion, and the individual vehicle record. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup before purchase and ask a GMC dealer to check open campaigns and completed service actions.

2026 used-buying checklist

  1. Confirm the engine. Verify the 3.0-liter Duramax and RPO code LZ0 rather than relying on an online listing.
  2. Confirm the trim. Establish whether the truck is an AT4, standard AT4X, AT4X AEV Edition, Denali, or Denali Ultimate. Check the cab, bed, drivetrain, tires, and option list.
  3. Read the door-jamb payload label. Use the truck’s actual payload rating when calculating passengers, cargo, accessories, and trailer tongue weight.
  4. Run the VIN for recalls and service campaigns. Check NHTSA and a GMC dealer, and confirm that required repairs are documented as complete.
  5. Review diesel service records. Look for regular oil and fuel-filter service, DEF-system repairs, emissions warnings, software updates, and repeated check-engine events.
  6. Inspect the underbody. Look for bent or heavily scraped skid plates, damaged recovery points, leaking shocks, cracked bumpers, and underbody damage from trail impacts.
  7. Check the tires and alignment. Uneven wear on 33-inch mud tires can indicate alignment, suspension, inflation, or previous impact issues. Confirm that all four tires match and have useful tread.
  8. Test the four-wheel-drive system. Check high range, low range, Terrain Mode, and the locker controls in a safe location. Warning lights or refusal to engage require diagnosis.
  9. Test the cabin technology. Verify every camera view, the rear camera mirror if equipped, the head-up display, seat ventilation and massage, the Bose audio system, the infotainment screen, and wireless connectivity.
  10. Operate the MultiPro tailgate and power steps. These complex features are useful but expensive to repair if damaged or neglected.
  11. Confirm driver-assistance status. If equipped with Super Cruise, verify hardware operation and understand whether an active subscription or trial remains.
  12. Obtain an independent inspection. A diesel specialist should inspect the engine, transmission, emissions system, suspension, frame, and signs of water or accident damage before money changes hands.

Closest alternatives

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2

The Silverado ZR2 is the closest GM alternative. It shares much of the underlying truck architecture but presents the package with Chevrolet’s off-road identity and can cost less depending on configuration. Consumer Guide judged the Silverado ZR2 somewhat more capable off-road while finding the GMC’s cabin more upscale. The buying decision comes down to price, bumper and tire design, interior materials, locker and damper equipment, approach and departure geometry, and whether GMC’s presentation justifies its premium.

Ford F-150

The 2024 F-150 offers a broader powertrain range, including the 3.5-liter EcoBoost and PowerBoost hybrid. Ford lists up to 13,500 pounds of towing for a properly equipped 3.5-liter EcoBoost F-150. The PowerBoost produces 430 hp and 570 lb-ft and adds hybrid-system and onboard electrical capability. Figures and configuration requirements are detailed in Ford’s 2024 towing guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Ford may be the better choice for maximum towing flexibility, hybrid operation, broader configuration choice, or a buyer who does not want diesel emissions equipment. The GMC’s differentiators are diesel refinement, the AT4X’s factory off-road hardware, and its premium cabin presentation.

Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX

The 2024 Tundra i-FORCE MAX hybrid produces 437 hp and 583 lb-ft, with maximum towing up to 12,000 pounds and maximum payload up to 1,940 pounds, depending on configuration. Toyota’s 2024 model-year announcement and brochure provide the configuration details.

The Tundra is compelling for buyers who want hybrid power, strong acceleration, a modern off-road package, or Toyota’s TRD Pro and Capstone approaches. The Sierra remains distinctive because it combines a diesel powertrain with a factory luxury/off-road trim.

Ram 1500

Ram remains a benchmark for cabin comfort and luxury presentation, but a buyer comparing a 2024 truck should verify the exact powertrain lineup in the relevant market and trim. Do not assume that a 2024 Ram diesel is a direct substitute for the Sierra Duramax without checking availability and equipment.

Final verdict

The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X Duramax deserves the “go-anywhere luxury truck” description only with careful qualification. It is not literally capable of going anywhere, it is not the best Sierra for maximum towing or payload, and it does not ride like the finest luxury SUV. Its full-size dimensions remain a disadvantage on tight trails, while its mud tires, lift, weight, and armor impose real road and efficiency penalties.

Nevertheless, the central idea works. The AT4X is a rare factory-built combination of legitimate off-road ability and genuine long-distance comfort. The 305-hp, 495-lb-ft Duramax is quiet and effortless, the lockers and DSSV dampers are meaningful in difficult terrain, and the cabin is luxurious enough to make a long highway day easy. For a buyer who regularly travels long distances, needs a capable trail-access truck, and accepts diesel ownership requirements, the AT4X is the most convincing Sierra compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which 2024 GMC Sierra diesel has the best balance of luxury and off-road ability?

The Sierra 1500 AT4X Duramax is the best balance. It has a factory lift, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear electronic lockers, 33-inch mud-terrain tires, low range, and a luxury-oriented cabin. The AT4X AEV Edition adds more armor and AEV equipment but also more weight and cost.

Can a 2024 Sierra AT4X tow 13,300 pounds?

No—not as a general rule. The 13,300-pound maximum applies to a specific Double Cab 2WD Duramax with the Max Trailering Package and 20-inch wheels. GMC lists a much lower 8,700-pound maximum for the relevant AT4X short-bed configuration. Always use the individual truck’s trailering information and payload label.

Is the Duramax a good choice for short trips?

Usually not. Repeated short trips, low-speed driving, stop-and-go use, and extended idling can prevent the diesel particulate filter from completing regeneration. A gas Sierra is generally the simpler choice for school runs, low annual mileage, and frequent idling.

What should I check before buying a used 2024 Sierra 1500 Duramax?

Confirm the LZ0 engine and exact trim, read the door-jamb payload label, run the VIN through NHTSA and a GMC dealer, review oil, fuel-filter, DEF, emissions, and software service records, inspect the underbody and tires, test the four-wheel-drive system and cameras, and obtain an independent diesel inspection.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the 2024 Sierra 1500 AT4X Duramax if you want one full-size truck that can cross long highway distances, reach remote trailheads, tow a moderate trailer, and still provide massaging leather seats and premium technology. Choose the Denali Ultimate Duramax if luxury-road manners matter more than technical trails, the AT4 Duramax if value matters more than lockers and DSSV dampers, and a lower-trim diesel if maximum towing is the priority. For mostly short trips, buy a gas Sierra instead.
