The road reaches the 3,491-foot summit and the Veterans War Memorial Tower, but this is a slow mountain drive—not a normal park access road. Expect narrow lanes, steep grades, blind curves, limited summit parking, changing weather, and a vehicle-length restriction that rules out vehicles longer than 22 feet.
For 2026, the published driving season is scheduled for May 16 through October 30, weather and road conditions permitting. Before leaving, check the Massachusetts DCR Mount Greylock page or call the Visitor Center at 413-499-4262.

Where to start the drive
The most straightforward approach is from the Lanesborough side. Take Massachusetts Route 7 to Lanesborough, turn onto North Main Street, and follow signs for Greylock Road and Rockwell Road. The Mount Greylock Visitor Center and park headquarters are at:
30 Rockwell Road, Lanesborough, MA 01237
That address is useful for reaching the park, but it is not the summit. The summit is several miles beyond the Visitor Center on the mountain road, so select the summit or Veterans War Memorial Tower as your destination if your navigation app offers that option. Otherwise, use the Visitor Center as the first waypoint and continue uphill after arriving.
#1 Best Overall
From North Adams, the Mount Greylock Scenic Byway connects with the mountain through Furnace Street, Reservoir Road, West Mountain Road, and Notch Road. Which approach is practical depends on current closures, maintenance, and your starting point. Do not assume that a route shown by a navigation app is open simply because it appears on the map.
When the summit road is open
The summit drive is seasonal. DCR lists the 2026 Auto Road operating period as May 16 through October 30, subject to weather and conditions. The reservation itself is open from dawn to dusk, but that does not mean the road to the summit is open every day of the year.
Near the opening and closing dates, and whenever rain, wind, fog, or early snow is possible, check the current advisory before setting out. A road may be closed temporarily even during the scheduled season. The Visitor Center phone number is 413-499-4262.

Mount Greylock’s Auto Roads are narrow, steep, and winding. The drive requires more attention than a typical scenic park road because sightlines are short and the road can become difficult when two vehicles meet on a curve.
- Drive slowly enough to stop within the visible road.
- Expect blind corners, cyclists, hikers, pedestrians, and wildlife.
- Keep to your side of the road and avoid cutting across curves.
- Use a low gear on steep descents rather than riding the brakes.
- Allow extra space when passing or meeting another vehicle.
- Expect slower traffic, especially on busy weekends and during fall foliage.
A vehicle with good brakes, properly inflated tires, and enough fuel is more important here than having a powerful engine. Check your tire pressure, coolant level, and brake condition before starting. If your car is overheating, has weak brakes, or is carrying a heavy trailer, the summit road is a poor place to discover the problem.

Vehicle-size restriction
Vehicles longer than 22 feet are prohibited on the Mount Greylock Auto Roads and at the summit. That restriction includes oversized recreational vehicles, buses, and other long vehicles. Measure the complete vehicle if you are unsure—do not rely on whether it looks similar to a normal passenger van.
The Visitor Center remains accessible to vehicles of all sizes. Groups should use minibuses or passenger vans rather than full-size buses if they plan to travel beyond the Visitor Center. A large vehicle should not drive up expecting to turn around at the summit or find an exception at the gate.
Parking and fees
Summit parking is limited and can fill during summer weekends and the fall foliage season. The road may still be open while the parking area is full, so arriving late can leave you waiting or unable to park at the top.
DCR currently lists these daily parking fees:
| Vehicle plate | Daily fee |
|---|---|
| Massachusetts resident | $5 |
| Out-of-state plate | $20 |
Parking at the Visitor Center is free, but leaving your vehicle there is not a substitute for summit access if the Auto Road is closed. Have your license plate information available if a kiosk or attendant requests it.
What is at the top
The summit is the highest point in Massachusetts, at 3,491 feet above sea level. On a clear day, the views can extend roughly 60 to 90 miles, although fog and low cloud can erase the panorama completely.
Rank #3
At the summit, you will find:
- The Veterans War Memorial Tower
- Bascom Lodge, which is separately operated
- Scenic viewpoints and open lawn
- Picnic tables
- Portable toilets
- Trail access, including the Appalachian Trail
The tower and Bascom Lodge are seasonal. For 2026, DCR lists their opening for May 23; the tower is also weather-dependent and may be closed when the Auto Road remains open. Portable toilets at the summit are listed as open 24 hours a day.
There are no trash receptacles at the summit. Pack out food packaging, bottles, pet waste, and any other rubbish. Keep dogs leashed and attended, and stay on designated paths and trails to avoid damaging summit vegetation.
Prepare for colder, faster-changing weather
The summit is commonly 5 to 10 degrees cooler than the base, and wind can make it feel colder still. Bring a jacket or warm layer even if the valley is comfortable. A clear drive up can also end with fog at the top, so treat the tower and long-distance views as possibilities rather than guarantees.
Wind, storms, or fog can close the tower without closing the Auto Road. If the weather is deteriorating, do not continue merely because the gate is open. Visibility on the descent matters as much as the view at the summit.
A practical driving checklist
- Check the DCR road status and weather forecast before departure.
- Confirm that your vehicle, including any trailer or motorhome, is no longer than 22 feet.
- Fuel up, inspect tires and brakes, and bring water, food, layers, and required medication.
- Enter the Visitor Center first if using navigation from the Lanesborough side, then continue to the summit.
- Drive conservatively on the uphill and downhill sections; do not assume opposing traffic can easily move aside.
- Carry a payment method and your license plate information for parking.
- Keep your phone charged, but do not depend on cell service at the summit or on trails.
- Take all trash with you and leave pets leashed.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming the road is open year-round: It is a seasonal Auto Road, with the 2026 schedule running from May 16 through October 30, conditions permitting.

Putting only the Visitor Center into navigation: The Visitor Center is at the base area. You must continue up the mountain to reach the summit.
Taking a full-size bus or oversized RV: Vehicles longer than 22 feet cannot use the Auto Roads or reach the summit.
Expecting free parking everywhere: Visitor Center parking is free, while summit and some trailhead parking areas charge fees.
Planning around an outdated closing date: The current published 2026 schedule does not use the often-repeated November 1 closing date. Verify the official schedule for the year of your visit.

How much does it cost to park at Mount Greylock?
DCR currently lists a daily fee of $5 for Massachusetts residents and $20 for vehicles with out-of-state plates at the summit and certain other parking areas. Visitor Center parking is free.
How long is the road to the Mount Greylock summit?
The summit is several miles beyond the Visitor Center on the mountain road. The exact drive time varies with the approach, traffic, road conditions, and stops, so allow extra time rather than treating it as a quick through-road.
Can an RV or bus drive to the top of Mount Greylock?
Only if the complete vehicle is no longer than 22 feet. Vehicles over 22 feet, including oversized RVs and buses, are prohibited on the Auto Roads and at the summit. Large vehicles can reach the Visitor Center but should not continue uphill.
The Bottom Line
Driving to Mount Greylock’s summit is straightforward if the Auto Roads are open and your vehicle fits the 22-foot limit. Use the Lanesborough approach via Route 7, North Main Street, Greylock Road, and Rockwell Road; allow for a slow, technical mountain drive; and check DCR conditions before leaving. Bring a warm layer, expect limited parking and a fee at the summit, and do not count on the tower or long-range views being open in poor weather.
