A powerslide usually describes how a slide is started—engine power breaks rear-tire grip—while a drift describes the broader act of deliberately holding a controlled slide through a corner. A power-induced powerslide can therefore be part of a drift, but the terms overlap and are not a universal technical binary: the FIA defines drifting in competition documents, while its published material does not establish a formal definition of “powerslide.”
The distinction in one view
| Question | Powerslide | Drift |
|---|---|---|
| What the word emphasizes | The use of engine power to break traction, commonly at the rear tires. | The controlled slide itself, maintained while the car travels through a corner. |
| Typical conversational use | A maneuver that develops during part of a corner, often as the car exits or accelerates through it. | A sustained, deliberate oversteer maneuver; it can also refer to an organized motorsport discipline. |
| Does power have to cause it? | Yes in the ordinary meaning of the term: power is the defining emphasis. | No single initiation method is universal; power can be involved, but the defining idea is controlled sliding. |
| Competition meaning | Usually a description of a maneuver, not the name of a judging format. | In FIA competition documents, a course-based discipline judged for factors such as line, angle, style and speed. |
| Formal FIA boundary | The FIA sources cited here do not provide a formal definition. | FIA documents describe controlled oversteer, driver inputs, counter-steering and marked course features. |
The table captures common usage, not a rule that every driver, series or commentator follows identically. The lack of a formal FIA powerslide definition is important: calling one maneuver a powerslide and another a drift often reflects context and emphasis rather than two mutually exclusive mechanical events.

What “powerslide” usually means
It names the cause being emphasized
When a driver says a car powerslid, the word normally points to the moment engine torque overcame the available rear-tire grip. The rear tires begin to rotate faster than the surface can support, the rear of the car steps outward, and the driver allows or manages that movement. In this usage, “power” is the distinguishing idea; the description is about the way the slide was induced rather than about a complete competition format.

Rear-wheel-drive cars are commonly associated with the term because they can send engine torque directly to the rear tires, but the FIA material does not set rear-wheel drive as a dividing line. Do not treat drivetrain layout as an official definition.

It may describe only part of a corner
In everyday driving and motorsport commentary, a powerslide can develop as a car progresses through a bend or begins to exit it. The slide may be brief relative to the whole corner, or it may continue long enough to become part of a larger drift. “Powerslide” therefore often identifies an event within a corner rather than naming the driver’s entire run.
It is not an FIA competition category
The FIA guideline for drifting events and the 2022 FIA Motorsport Games Drifting Cup regulations describe drifting, not a separately regulated powerslide discipline. Since those documents do not define “powerslide,” phrases such as “a powerslide always starts on corner exit” or “a powerslide can never be a drift” go beyond what the governing material establishes. Those may be useful shorthand in a particular community, but they are not universal rules.
What “drift” usually means
The controlled slide is the central idea
Drifting emphasizes deliberately maintaining a car in oversteer while it travels through a corner. The driver is not merely experiencing a loss of grip; the slide is controlled through steering, throttle, braking and the car’s path. This broader meaning allows a drift to include the initiation, the sustained middle of the corner and the transition toward the next direction.

The FIA Guideline for Drifting Event states in section 1.1: “The car must go sideways in over-steer and the over-steer must be controlled by the drivers’ inputs, and they will be judged on style and clipping zones.” That wording makes two points that separate a controlled drift from an accidental slide: the car is intentionally sideways in oversteer, and the driver’s inputs keep the behavior under control.
FIA’s regulatory description
The glossary in the 2022 FIA Motorsport Games: Drifting Cup Sporting Regulations, updated 25 January 2022, defines drifting as “a driving technique in which a driver breaks the rear wheels out of a gripping position and counter-steers the car around a course marked by clipping points, clipping zones and touch & go areas.” This is a competition-oriented definition. It describes the rear wheels leaving a gripping position, counter-steering and course features that officials can evaluate; it does not claim that every informal use of “drift” has exactly the same requirements.

Drift has both maneuver and discipline meanings
Outside events, “drift” can simply mean the controlled slide. In motorsport, it also names a judged discipline organized on a marked course. The FIA guideline describes events on permanent tracks or temporary tracks and presents drifting as an entry-level motorsport activity. Those event references explain the sporting context; they should not be read as instructions to slide a car on a public road.
How the two terms overlap
A powerslide can be part of a drift
Suppose engine power breaks rear-tire grip while a car is moving through a corner. If the driver keeps the oversteer controlled and carries the slide along the intended path, the initial power-induced moment can reasonably be called a powerslide and the sustained maneuver a drift. One word highlights the trigger; the other describes the controlled state and, potentially, the whole run.
A drift does not have to be described as a powerslide
Drivers can initiate or manage a drift using combinations of steering, weight transfer, braking and throttle. If the speaker is emphasizing the maintained sideways attitude rather than engine torque as the cause, “drift” is the more useful word. Because the FIA sources do not formalize “powerslide,” they do not support a rule that every drift must be power-initiated.
Why arguments about the “correct” word persist
People often use the terms at different levels of detail. One person may name the first instant of rear-tire breakaway; another may name the entire corner; a competition official may be discussing a judged discipline. Both can be describing the same run without using the words in exactly the same way. The safest explanation is to state what is being emphasized—power-induced initiation, sustained control, or the organized event—rather than insist on a single universal boundary.
Where the distinction appears during a corner
There is no FIA rule assigning one word to a fixed geometric point in every corner. In common usage, however, the terms tend to answer different questions:

- How did the rear tires lose grip? If the answer is engine power, “powerslide” communicates that cause.
- What is the car doing while it travels through the bend? If the answer is a deliberately maintained, controlled oversteer attitude, “drift” communicates the state.
- What is the driver’s entire scored run called? In an FIA-style event, it is a drifting run, regardless of whether a particular transition included a power-induced slide.
These are comparison axes, not driving instructions. They help explain why a commentator can use both terms for different moments of one corner without contradicting the other description.

It is not simply a race to the finish
The FIA’s Motorsport Games preview of drifting explains that competition is judged using line, angle, style and speed. The fastest elapsed time alone does not decide the result. A driver must place the car through the prescribed course while producing the controlled, visibly sideways behavior that officials are assessing.
Course features make the performance assessable
Clipping points, clipping zones and touch-and-go areas give officials reference locations for the car’s path. The guideline says drivers must demonstrate speed and the ability to control the slide, with judging that includes style and clipping zones. The exact layout and scoring implementation are event-specific, so a grassroots meeting may use a different rule set from an FIA-sanctioned competition.
Tandem battles add a second comparison
In tandem competition, two drivers are evaluated in lead and chase performances. The lead car sets a line and pace; the chase car is assessed in relation to that performance while maintaining its own control. This is why a competition drift cannot be reduced to “who crossed the finish line first.” The FIA’s factors—line, angle, style and speed—describe what judges compare, while tandem formats add the relationship between the two runs.
What the regulations do and do not establish
The FIA documents establish a competition description for drifting, including controlled oversteer, driver inputs, counter-steering and marked course features. They do not create a worldwide dictionary that forces every club, simulator, media outlet or driver to use “powerslide” and “drift” identically. Always check the sporting regulations for the particular event if a result, eligibility question or protest depends on terminology.

Common misconceptions
“A powerslide is always an exit maneuver”
Many explanations associate powerslides with corner exit because acceleration can be the moment that engine torque exceeds rear-tire grip. That is a useful everyday example, not a formal boundary. The researchable FIA documents do not define the term or prescribe a single point in the corner where it must begin.
“Only a rear-wheel-drive car can drift”
Rear-wheel-drive cars are strongly associated with traditional drifting because the rear axle can be driven directly into a slide. Nevertheless, the FIA definitions quoted above focus on controlled oversteer, driver inputs, counter-steering and course performance; they do not state a universal drivetrain requirement. Treat drivetrain claims as descriptions of a setup or style, not as the definition of the word.
“Any loss of grip is a drift”
A momentary slide that the driver does not deliberately control is not what the FIA competition wording describes. The official language requires controlled oversteer and driver inputs. Everyday conversation can be looser, but a controlled, intentional slide is the meaningful distinction when precision matters.
“Drifting is scored by speed alone”
FIA competition guidance explicitly identifies line, angle, style and speed. A fast run that misses the intended line or fails to show the required control is not automatically the best-scoring run. The balance among those criteria depends on the event’s regulations and judging system.
Reading the words in different contexts
Casual car conversation
In a casual discussion, “powerslide” normally tells the listener that throttle or engine torque caused the rear to step out. “Drift” tells the listener that the driver held a controlled sideways attitude. If the distinction matters, add the missing context: say whether you mean the initiation, the sustained corner, or a competition run.

Motorsport reporting
A report may call a power-induced transition a powerslide while referring to the complete judged attempt as a drift. That is consistent with the terms operating at different scales. Reporting should avoid presenting the powerslide wording as an FIA-defined category, because the cited FIA material does not supply such a definition.
Simulators and instructional material
Games, simulators and schools may adopt their own vocabulary. A tutorial can use “powerslide” for a throttle-triggered breakaway and “drift” for the maintained slide, or it can use “drift” for both. The local glossary controls the lesson; the general distinction remains a useful way to ask what the instructor is naming.
Safety and venue context
Sliding a car intentionally requires a controlled environment, appropriate event rules and qualified supervision. The FIA guideline’s references to permanent and temporary tracks describe where organized drifting can take place; they are not permission or advice to attempt a powerslide or drift on a public road, parking area or other uncontrolled space. Public-road traffic, pedestrians, property and legal restrictions make that setting fundamentally different from a closed course.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor readers who want to learn the discipline, the relevant question is not which word sounds more impressive. It is whether instruction and practice occur at a properly managed venue with the event’s safety procedures, vehicle requirements and regulations clearly stated. The terminology article cannot substitute for that local guidance.
A practical wording guide
- Describe the trigger: use “powerslide” when engine power breaking rear-tire grip is the fact you want to highlight.
- Describe the controlled maneuver: use “drift” when the car is deliberately held in oversteer through a corner.
- Describe an FIA-style event: use “drifting” for the judged discipline involving a marked course and criteria such as line, angle, style and speed.
- Handle overlap explicitly: say that a power-induced powerslide became part of a drift when both descriptions apply.
- Qualify the boundary: note that “powerslide” has no formal definition in the FIA sources cited here and everyday usage varies.
Bottom line
“Powerslide” is the narrower, cause-focused word: engine power breaks traction, commonly at the rear tires. “Drift” is the broader, control-focused word for deliberately sustaining oversteer through a corner, and it is also the name of an FIA-described judged motorsport discipline. The same run can contain a powerslide and be a drift. When precision matters, identify whether you are talking about the power-induced initiation, the maintained slide or the rules of a particular competition.
