DoorDash says early tests of its new in-house drone system averaged under five minutes from restaurant to doorstep. That figure applies only to a limited sample of U.S. Marketplace deliveries, not a guaranteed or generally available delivery time. DoorDash also says the aircraft sounds roughly like a passing car while cruising, but it has not published a decibel measurement. Its first DoorDash Air pilot is planned for Northern California; detailed customer launch dates and coverage have not been announced.
What DoorDash’s five-minute claim means
DoorDash announced DoorDash Air, an in-house drone delivery system developed by DoorDash Labs, on September 30, 2026. The company says initial tests averaged under five minutes from restaurant to doorstep. Its footnote narrows that claim to a sample of U.S. Marketplace deliveries of limited distance and size, and explicitly says delivery times are not guaranteed. It is a test result reported by DoorDash, not a customer-wide service average. DoorDash’s system announcement
The under-five-minute estimate should not be conflated with DoorDash’s separate figure of a 25-minute average drone delivery time, described in July 2026 as the company’s latest estimate for drone deliveries in its broader partner program. The available announcements do not establish that the two figures use comparable routes, samples, or operating conditions. DoorDash’s July 2026 program announcement
How loud are DoorDash’s drones?
DoorDash describes the aircraft as having six slow-spinning propellers and says cruising noise at delivery height is roughly comparable to a passing car. That is a qualitative comparison from the company, not a published acoustic test. The September announcement provides no decibel level, measurement protocol, flight-height details for the comparison, independent measurement, neighborhood complaint count, or pilot feedback.

Noise complaints have been reported in the wider U.S. drone-delivery debate. Associated Press coverage documents residents’ concerns as several operators pursue expansion, but it does not establish a complaint record for DoorDash Air. Likewise, the FAA’s April 2025 environmental assessment addresses Wing Aviation’s proposed operations in Dallas–Fort Worth, not DoorDash’s new aircraft. Those concerns and findings cannot be assigned to DoorDash Air. Associated Press coverage of drone-delivery expansion · FAA environmental assessment for Wing’s DFW proposal
Measured sound levels and complaint rates for DoorDash Air after its Northern California pilot begins are not established in the announcements. The useful evidence to look for will be sound measurements with stated distance and flight conditions, flight frequency, public feedback channels, and reported complaint totals.

What DoorDash says the system is designed to do
DoorDash says DoorDash Air combines the aircraft with purpose-designed order packaging, merchant handoffs, and an automated delivery platform. Its routing system considers weather, flight range, ground traffic, distance, order weight, and order contents, while coordinating kitchen preparation and routing in real time. These are DoorDash’s descriptions of its system and intended operation, not independently verified performance findings. DoorDash’s system announcement
The company estimates that about 80% of typical DoorDash restaurant orders are small and light enough for its aircraft. Its footnote qualifies that estimate as based on U.S. restaurant deliveries of limited distance and size over a limited measurement period. DoorDash also cites more than 20% of its 2025 platform orders as trips of three to five miles, which it says took nearly 25% longer on average than shorter deliveries. Those figures explain the company’s case for drones on some routes; they do not establish the actual speed or suitability of every order. DoorDash’s system announcement
