The idea is to stop the signal that a thief might relay to a keyless-entry car—but the available guidance does not establish that ordinary household foil reliably blocks every fob. For a more dependable everyday measure, use a purpose-made signal-blocking pouch and check that it works with your car.
How relay theft works—and which keys are at risk
This concern is mainly about passive keyless entry. With this system, a car detects a compatible fob nearby and may unlock without the driver pressing a button. Relay theft uses equipment to extend or relay communications so the car behaves as though its key is close enough to unlock and start. Police.uk explains the system and the basic relay-theft method in its vehicle-security guidance.

A conventional remote key is different: the driver must press a button to send an unlock command. The 2020 NDSS paper distinguishes this remote keyless entry from passive keyless entry and start. It describes a vehicle sending a low-frequency challenge that the fob answers on a UHF band, a communication that relay equipment can extend. That explains why passive systems can be targeted; it does not demonstrate that a particular foil wrap will stop an attack. Read the NDSS paper.

Aluminum conducts electricity, and a conductive enclosure can attenuate radio signals. That is the principle behind wrapping a fob in foil: if the enclosure sufficiently weakens the signal, the car may not detect the key when a relay device tries to communicate with it.

But the sources available here do not provide a controlled comparison or universal performance measurement for household foil. They do not establish how many layers to use, which wrapping method works, or whether a given fob and vehicle will be protected. A vehicle-security PDF hosted by Lackford Parish Council warns: “Don’t assume that wrapping your key in foil will do a good enough job. It isn’t designed for this purpose.” The document’s authorship is not established, so this is best treated as guidance in a locally hosted security document, not as a statement by a confirmed police service. Use and check a signal-blocking pouch
Police.uk recommends keeping the car key and spare well away from the vehicle at home, storing them in a screened pouch, and checking the pouch every few months. A pouch designed for car keys is more suitable than assuming kitchen foil will work. Hertfordshire Constabulary describes Faraday pouches as containing wire mesh that blocks radio signals from a keyless-entry system. - Put the fob in the pouch. Include spare fobs in your storage routine, too.
- Check it against your own car. With the fob enclosed, approach the vehicle and see whether passive unlocking still occurs. If the doors unlock, the pouch is not blocking the signal adequately in that test. The method is a practical check, not laboratory certification or proof against every attack. AP reported this test on May 16, 2024, citing automotive-security experts. Read AP’s report.
- Repeat the check periodically. Police.uk recommends checking the pouch every few months, since its effectiveness can change with wear or damage.
Do not put a fob in a microwave or freezer as a substitute: AP notes that these are not equivalent to a Faraday bag, and a microwave may damage the key.
Other layers of protection
- Keep keys away from the car. Store the main key and spare well away from the vehicle at home, as Police.uk advises.
- Disable the fob if supported. Some vehicles or keys offer a way to turn off wireless signals when the fob is not in use. The feature and procedure vary; consult the owner’s manual or ask a dealer. Hertfordshire Constabulary’s guidance also advises checking with a dealer.
- Reprogramme keys after buying a used car. Police.uk recommends this so keys that should no longer operate the vehicle can be removed from its programming. Ask a dealer or qualified vehicle-security provider about the process for your car. Police.uk’s advice.
- Consider a physical deterrent. A steering-wheel lock does not block key signals, but it adds a separate physical obstacle. AP notes that extra effort may lead a thief to choose an easier target. It is a layer, not a substitute for signal protection. AP’s report.
- Ask about an approved immobiliser. Police.uk recommends speaking with a dealer about an immobiliser approved by the vehicle manufacturer. Its purpose is to prevent starting without the correct fob, key, or activation process. Police.uk vehicle-security guidance.
