Does Toyota’s Solid-State EV Battery Really Offer 745 Miles of Range?

Toyota’s solid-state battery roadmap describes development targets, not a verified 745-mile production-car range. Here’s what the targets mean and when commercialization is planned.

No Toyota source cited here verifies a 745-mile production-EV range. Toyota’s disclosed figures are development targets: a 20% range improvement for its first all-solid-state battery over a separate performance-battery baseline, plus a distinct 50% target for a higher-level specification still under research. Toyota’s latest filing targets commercialization in 2027–2028—not a vehicle launch with a confirmed 745-mile rating.

Where the 745-mile claim stands

Toyota’s public battery roadmap and latest filing do not report a 745-mile road test, an EPA or WLTP rating, or a production Toyota model rated for that distance. The exact derivation and test conditions behind the 745-mile figure are not established in those sources. It should be treated as an unverified headline figure, not a Toyota-verified range.

The distinction matters because Toyota announced percentage improvements against a defined comparison battery, not a final range figure for a named solid-state vehicle. Its projections also include vehicle-efficiency improvements such as aerodynamics and reduced weight, so they are not simply a battery-pack mileage claim. (Toyota Motor Corporation, June 13, 2023; Toyota Form 20-F for fiscal 2026)

What Toyota has actually announced

Toyota’s June 2023 roadmap sets out separate battery tracks. The performance-version battery is the baseline for the solid-state comparisons; it is not itself Toyota’s solid-state battery.

Battery track What Toyota said Important boundary
Next-generation performance-version battery Target of 1,000 km (about 621 miles) of cruising range for a BEV expected in 2026; 20% lower cost than the then-current bZ4X; and charging from 10% to 80% state of charge in 20 minutes or less. The range projection includes vehicle-efficiency improvements. This is the comparison battery for the solid-state targets, not the solid-state battery.
First all-solid-state BEV battery Target of a 20% range improvement over the performance-version square battery and 10%–80% charging in 10 minutes or less. Toyota said it was striving for commercialization in 2027–2028. A target, not a measured result or finalized vehicle rating. Toyota GB described the initial solid-state range target as approximately 1,000 km (621 miles).
Higher-level solid-state specification Target of 50% more cruising range than the performance-version square battery. A separate specification under research and development. Toyota did not give a final model, battery capacity, test cycle, or completed vehicle result for it in the cited roadmap.

These figures should not be collapsed into one claim. The 20% target applies to Toyota’s first solid-state battery program; the 50% target belongs to a separate, higher-level specification still being researched. Neither figure establishes a production car’s rated range. (Toyota Motor Corporation, June 13, 2023; Toyota GB, June 2023)

What the charging target means

Toyota’s announced solid-state charging target is 10 minutes or less for a state-of-charge increase from 10% to 80%. It is not a claim of a demonstrated full 0%–100% charge in 10 minutes. The roadmap presents it as a target alongside ongoing development, not as a result from a production vehicle. (Toyota Motor Corporation, June 13, 2023)

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 48A - Hardwired 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
  • HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
  • CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

Why commercialization still depends on manufacturing

In its fiscal 2026 Form 20-F, Toyota says its all-solid-state batteries are approaching practical application for BEVs, but retains a 2027–2028 commercialization target and says product and mass-production-method development continue. The filing also describes work with Idemitsu on mass production of solid electrolytes and all-solid-state batteries, and a separate October 2025 collaboration with Sumitomo Metal Mining on cathode material. That is evidence of continuing industrial development, not evidence that buyers can already purchase the battery or a vehicle using it. (Toyota Form 20-F for fiscal 2026)

Toyota and Idemitsu’s October 2023 announcement explains some of the scale-up challenge. The companies identified sulfide solid electrolytes as a focus because of their softness and adhesion, while setting work on quality, cost, lead times, pilot-facility production and supply-chain preparation. Toyota CEO Koji Sato also described cracking between electrodes and solid electrolyte during repeated charging and discharging as a durability challenge. The announced next phase included verifying mass production using Idemitsu’s pilot facility and establishing stable raw-material procurement. These are stated development tasks, not proof that commercial-scale durability and supply are already solved. (Toyota Motor Corporation and Idemitsu Kosan, October 12, 2023)

What would confirm a 745-mile Toyota EV

A meaningful range claim needs a specific production vehicle and a disclosed test basis. Toyota’s reviewed materials do not provide the information needed to evaluate 745 miles as a buyer-facing rating:

  • A named model and battery configuration.
  • A finalized range under a stated test cycle and conditions.
  • Battery capacity and relevant vehicle specifications.
  • Production availability and market-specific pricing.
  • Real-world durability and warranty information.

Until those details are published, comparing the headline figure with another EV’s EPA, WLTP or other cycle rating would mix unlike claims. Toyota’s disclosures support reporting battery-development targets and a commercialization window, but not ranking a future Toyota against current production EVs.
