A 1965 MV Agusta 500 Grand Prix followed in 2026 at £967,000 including buyer’s premium; a specialist ranking converts that result to $1.306 million. The list below ranks documented auction results, not private-sale reports or asking prices.
How this ranking works
“Most expensive” depends on which market is counted. This list uses public auction sales compiled by The Vintagent, whose ranking converts non-dollar results using the exchange rate on the sale date. It includes sales through April 2026. The compilation is not a single official global auction-house database, so treat it as a reviewed ranking rather than an exhaustive audit of every sale worldwide. Why the top two stand out
1. 1915 Cyclone V-Twin: $1.32 million
Mecum reported that the Cyclone sold for $1,320,000 at its Las Vegas auction on February 1, 2025, describing it at the time as the highest public-auction motorcycle result and the first motorcycle to exceed $1 million at public auction. The motorcycle had been comprehensively restored by Stephen Wright and came from the Urban S. Hirsch III Collection. 2. 1965 MV Agusta 500 Grand Prix: £967,000 including premium
Bonhams sold this ex-works racing motorcycle at Stafford on April 25, 2026. Its sale report associates the bike with Mike Hailwood and Giacomo Agostini and records previous ownership by John Surtees. The £967,000 total, including premium, was more than six times the original low estimate and set a record for an Italian motorcycle sold at auction. What the list says about motorcycle values
The leading entries include rare early machines, racing motorcycles, and models with documented histories. That context helps explain why collectors may pay extraordinary sums, but these auction reports do not establish a universal formula for valuing a motorcycle. Provenance and restoration are facts to consider, not a guaranteed price premium.
Records also have different scopes. Bonhams reported a £506,000 sale including premium for an ex-Barry Sheene 1977 Suzuki RG500 XR14, describing it as a record for a Japanese motorcycle at auction. The Cyclone’s $1.32 million result led the reviewed ranking until the MV Agusta sale entered it in 2026. Future sales, and the currency conversion convention used for non-dollar results, can change the order.
