The 2026 U.S.-market Subaru WRX provides 36.5 inches of rear legroom, 36.7 inches of rear headroom, 55.6 inches of rear shoulder room and a 12.5-cubic-foot trunk. That is enough for two adults, ordinary shopping and moderate luggage. It is not a substitute for a roomy family sedan or SUV, and the sedan-style trunk opening can reject bulky items even when the stated volume sounds adequate.
The most important practical test is individual fit: sit in the back with the adults or child seat you actually plan to carry, then load the luggage, stroller or other object you use most often.

What the WRX’s published measurements mean
Subaru of America lists the following dimensions for the 2026 WRX. The official 2025 brochure lists the same rear-seat and trunk figures, so there is no model-year change in these published space measurements.

These are manufacturer dimensions, not a guarantee that every passenger, child seat or piece of luggage will fit. Legroom is measured to a reference point; a tall driver with the seat far back leaves less usable space behind that seat. Likewise, trunk volume is a calculated capacity, while a stroller, hard-sided suitcase or large box may be too wide or too tall for the opening.

How comfortable is the rear seat for adults?
Two adults
Independent evaluations are broadly positive for a compact performance sedan. Consumer Reports describes the rear seat as “reasonably comfortable,” noting usable leg support, space for feet under the front seats and a backrest that is not excessively upright. Car and Driver says two adults can use the second row without much complaint, while also emphasizing that the area is not huge.
That combination makes the WRX workable for commuting with passengers, dinners, airport runs and occasional longer trips. Comfort will vary with height, footwear, the amount of padding each person prefers and how far forward the front seats are set. A short front passenger can leave substantially more rear knee room than a tall driver.
Three adults
The 55.6-inch shoulder-room figure is a useful warning against treating the WRX as a three-across family car. Three average-size adults may fit for a short journey, but the middle passenger shares width with both outboard occupants and has less personal space. The center position may also feel less comfortable because of the seat shape and floor area.
If regular trips involve three adults in back, spend time in the actual car rather than relying on the specification sheet. The WRX’s numbers establish the available envelope, not a standardized comfort rating for every body size.

Front-seat position matters
Rear legroom is not an independent compartment. Before judging the back seat, place the driver’s seat where the primary driver normally uses it, then sit behind that position. Repeat the exercise behind the front passenger seat if both front occupants are tall. This simple check is more informative than comparing a single published legroom number with another vehicle.
Can you use the WRX with children and child seats?
Rear-facing seats require an actual fit check
Owner discussions include differing experiences with rear-facing child-seat clearance. Those anecdotes are not controlled tests and do not establish a universal result. A rear-facing seat’s shell, recline angle, base and support leg can consume considerably more front-to-back space than a child’s legs would.
Bring the exact child seat you intend to use to a Subaru retailer or another location where you can install it correctly. Test it behind the front-seat occupant who will use that position every day. A seat that fits behind a short passenger may force an uncomfortable driving position for a tall driver.

A practical child-seat test
- Set the driver’s seat and steering wheel for the real driver, including the normal shoe position and driving posture.
- Install the child seat in the intended rear position according to its manufacturer instructions.
- Check that the seat is tight, at the required recline angle and not pressing the front seat in a way that changes its safe adjustment.
- Try the same installation on the other side if you expect to move the seat or carry two children.
- Place the child in and out several times. Door opening, buckle access and the amount of space to maneuver matter as much as the final installed position.
- For a forward-facing seat, verify that the top-tether route and anchor access are practical with the seat installed.
Do not infer child-seat compatibility solely from 36.5 inches of rear legroom. The exact seat model and the required recline position control the result.

Is the 12.5-cubic-foot trunk enough?
Everyday errands
A 12.5-cubic-foot trunk is a useful size for a compact sedan. It should handle ordinary grocery bags, backpacks, work equipment and a moderate amount of travel luggage when the items are shaped to use the available floor and side space. A couple living with the WRX as a primary car can generally perform routine shopping without treating every trip as a packing exercise.
Use soft bags when possible: they can conform to the trunk’s corners and leave fewer unusable gaps than rigid cases. Keep heavier items low and secure them so they cannot move during braking or cornering.
Bulky objects are a different question
The WRX has a conventional sedan trunk with fixed side walls. The published volume does not state the opening width, opening height or the length and width of the flat floor. Consequently, no responsible specification-based answer can promise that a particular stroller, bicycle component, instrument case or large suitcase will pass through.

Measure the object at its widest and tallest points, then compare those measurements with the opening at the dealership. If an object only fits when tilted, check that the lid, hinges and side walls do not interfere. A trunk can have unused volume behind a narrow opening that is inaccessible to a bulky item.

What the 60/40 split-folding rear seat adds
The WRX uses 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks. Folding one section lets you carry a long or awkward item while retaining a rear seating position on the other side. Folding both sections creates more length for cargo, but removes the rear passenger positions while they are down.
This arrangement is useful for flat-pack purchases, sports equipment, musical gear and other long objects that do not require the full width of the trunk. It does not turn the WRX into a hatchback: the remaining opening between the trunk and cabin, the seatback shape and the item’s thickness still determine whether the load can be placed inside.
Protect the seatbacks and keep the load below a height that could obstruct the driver’s view. Secure anything that can slide forward under hard braking.
How the WRX works in common daily-use situations
One or two adults commuting
This is the easiest use case. The rear seat can carry a passenger when the front seats are set for normal driving, and the trunk has room for work bags, groceries and day-to-day equipment. The compact dimensions also make the car easier to park than a larger family vehicle.

Weekend travel
Two adults can use the rear seat for a trip, but luggage planning matters. Soft-sided bags and a deliberate loading order make better use of 12.5 cubic feet than several tall, rigid cases. If the trip requires bulky recreational equipment, check the object’s dimensions before assuming the split-fold seatbacks solve the problem.
Parents with a child seat
The WRX can be a workable family car for a child and regular short trips if the chosen seat installs without compromising the driver’s position. Rear-facing clearance is the make-or-break issue; test it before purchase. As children, seats and travel gear multiply, the sedan trunk opening may become the limiting factor before the nominal volume does.
Three adults plus luggage
This is the WRX’s most demanding ordinary scenario. Three adults consume most of the usable rear width, while luggage competes for the trunk. It may work for a short outing with compact bags, but it is not the configuration to choose without trying the occupants and cargo together.

How to compare the WRX with another vehicle
No single published number decides whether one car is more practical. When comparing the WRX with another sedan, use the same checklist for both vehicles:
- Published rear legroom, headroom and shoulder room, recorded for the same market and model year.
- Trunk volume together with the shape and height of the actual opening.
- Whether the rear seat folds in a 60/40 split or another arrangement, and how much access that creates.
- Whether two adults can sit comfortably with the front seats adjusted for the real drivers.
- Whether the specific child seat installs correctly behind the intended front occupant.
Do not treat a larger nominal trunk number as proof that a stroller or hard case will fit. Nor should a small difference in legroom outweigh a vehicle’s seat shape, door opening or the way your household actually loads it.
What the evidence can—and cannot—say
The dimension figures come from Subaru of America’s 2026 and 2025 U.S. brochures. Consumer Reports and Car and Driver provide qualitative context for adult comfort, not laboratory measurements covering every passenger size. Owner comments about child seats and strollers are individual experiences, not a representative survey.
There is no published market statistic establishing what percentage of WRX owners consider the space sufficient for daily use. The defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: the WRX is practically sized for a compact sport sedan, especially with two rear passengers and ordinary cargo, but personal fit and item dimensions determine whether it works for a particular household.
