Toyota’s published history and service bulletins identify engine families and specific conditions, but they do not provide comparable failure rates or longevity data. The 2AR-FE and 2AZ-FE can be assessed using the documented issues and maintenance guidance below; neither is established as an all-time winner.
Why there is no proven all-time winner
“Most reliable” can mean fewer repairs, lower repair costs, longer service life, or fewer serious failures. A fair comparison would also need to hold vehicle, model year, market, maintenance, and use reasonably constant. The available Toyota material does not do that: it documents certain conditions in specified applications, not a head-to-head reliability study.
Toyota’s historical engine information includes several four-cylinder families, among them the 2AR-FXE and 1NZ-FXE. That establishes their place in Toyota’s engine history; it does not rank them for reliability. Nor can a reputation attached to a whole vehicle model establish how one engine family compares with another.
What Toyota’s documented 2AZ-FE and 2AR-FE conditions show
| Engine and source | Documented condition | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 2AZ-FE — Toyota T-SB-0094-11 Rev2, dated August 11, 2011 | Toyota says some 2006–2011 model-year vehicles equipped with the 2AZ-FE may consume oil. The bulletin describes a piston-assembly change intended to minimize oil consumption and limits applicability by model and production details. | A rate of occurrence, that every 2AZ-FE is affected, or that the engine is less reliable overall than the 2AR-FE. Those comparisons are not stated in the bulletin. |
| 1AR-FE and 2AR-FE — Toyota T-SB-0041-13, dated March 15, 2013 | Toyota describes a brief knock or rattle from the engine compartment for approximately one second after a cold-soak start in some 2009–2013 model-year vehicles. | A comparative failure rate or evidence that this brief noise, by itself, means the engine is failing. Those conclusions are not stated in the bulletin. |
| 2AR-FE — Toyota’s 2012 bulletin for certain Camry applications | The bulletin covers a limited 2012 Camry condition involving air-conditioning inoperation and/or elevated engine temperature while stopped, with applicability bounded by model and production details. | A Toyota-wide 2AR-FE reliability ranking or a rate of occurrence across all vehicles using the engine. Those figures are not stated in the bulletin. |
A technical service bulletin is not itself a recall. Toyota explains that a TSB is a communication to dealerships that can update publications, describe parts changes, or provide service procedures. The bulletin’s existence identifies a documented service condition; it does not show how common that condition is across all engines.

Is the 2AZ-FE oil-consumption issue limited to certain years?
The cited Toyota bulletin says some 2006–2011 model-year vehicles equipped with the 2AZ-FE may exhibit oil consumption. It also uses model and production details to define applicability, so the year range alone does not establish that a particular car is covered or affected. Check the exact vehicle against the bulletin and its service history rather than treating every 2AZ-FE as having the condition.
What the 2AR-FE maintenance guidance can—and cannot—tell you
Toyota’s historical US maintenance guide lists 0W-20 oil and a 10,000-mile oil-change interval for 2010–2015 Camry vehicles equipped with the 2AR-FE. That guide expired in 2016; it is not universal or current advice for every vehicle with a 2AR-FE. Follow the owner’s manual and service requirements for the exact car, market, and model year.

How to evaluate a used Toyota four-cylinder
- Identify the engine code. Confirm it from vehicle-specific documentation or inspection; do not infer it from the model name alone. Engine options can vary by year, market, and trim.
- Check the exact application. For a 2AZ-FE, compare the vehicle’s model and production details with Toyota’s T-SB-0094-11 Rev2 applicability and look for relevant inspection or repair records.
- Review service history and symptoms. Look for consistent maintenance documentation and ask about oil use. For a vehicle covered by the 1AR-FE/2AR-FE cold-start bulletin, note whether the described brief noise occurs after a cold soak; have persistent or otherwise concerning symptoms assessed rather than diagnosing from a bulletin alone.
- Check campaigns separately. Use the vehicle’s identifying details to check recall or campaign status. A TSB and a safety recall are different kinds of notices.
- Assess the whole ownership case. Consider condition, repair history, parts and repair access, and the likely cost of any identified work. An engine-family reputation cannot substitute for the history and condition of the particular vehicle.
