Regular versus premium: what changes in practice?
Regular 87-octane fuel
Regular unleaded at the specified 87 minimum is the baseline fuel for normal driving in the cited 2.7L EcoBoost applications. You can use it for commuting, errands and ordinary highway driving without treating premium as mandatory. Ford’s 2015 and 2026 F-150 wording specifically describes the vehicle as operating on regular unleaded, and the 2016 specification table lists minimum 87 octane.
Premium 91-octane-or-higher fuel

How towing and hot weather affect the decision
Routine unloaded driving
For normal, lightly loaded driving, the specified regular grade meets the minimum requirement. If the truck runs smoothly and you are not seeking maximum output, there is no Ford requirement to purchase 91 octane solely because the engine is a 2.7L EcoBoost.
Trailer towing and severe duty
The 2015 F-150 owner’s manual recommends premium “for improved performance in severe duty usage, such as trailer tow.” The current F-150 guidance likewise highlights towing as a situation in which the benefit of 91 or higher is most noticeable. This is a recommendation to support performance under a heavier load, not a declaration that regular fuel is prohibited. Check the vehicle’s towing limits, payload rating and operating instructions separately; fuel grade does not increase the truck’s certified towing capacity.
High ambient temperatures
The 2026 F-150 manual identifies hot weather as another condition in which premium’s performance benefit is most noticeable. If you regularly tow or work the truck in high temperatures, premium is the fuel grade Ford says is most likely to provide a meaningful response. The manual still lists 87 as the operating minimum.

The 2026 Bronco’s published power difference
Ford’s 2026 Bronco technical specifications provide a concrete illustration of why “recommended” and “required” are different terms. For the 2.7L EcoBoost V6, Ford lists:

Those are manufacturer-published ratings, not an independent back-to-back road test. Ford states that the horsepower and torque ratings are based on premium fuel under the SAE J1349 standard and that results may vary. The same specification sheet lists 87 as the minimum and 91 or higher as recommended. In other words, the Bronco can operate on the minimum fuel while Ford quotes higher rated output when premium is used.
Why octane matters in a turbocharged engine
Octane is a fuel’s resistance to abnormal combustion, commonly called knock. Turbocharging raises the amount of air the engine can force into its cylinders, and the engine computer can adjust ignition timing and other controls to protect the engine when conditions demand it. Higher-octane fuel gives that control system more resistance to knock, which is why Ford associates premium with best performance in demanding conditions.

That explanation does not change the vehicle’s specified minimum. The 2.7L EcoBoost calibration is designed to operate on the regular grade listed in the applicable manual. Premium supplies additional knock resistance; it is not automatically a prerequisite for every drive.

Occasional light knock
Ford’s current F-150 manual says not to be concerned about occasional light knocking when using the recommended fuel. A brief, light noise under a particular load is not by itself proof that the engine requires premium.

Heavy knocking while using the recommended fuel is different. Ford directs the owner to contact an authorized dealer in that situation. Do not attempt to mask a persistent problem with an octane booster or an unapproved additive; have the vehicle diagnosed.

Check the basics first
- Confirm that the fuel meets the manual’s minimum octane and is fresh.
- Verify that you did not select a fuel containing more ethanol than the vehicle allows.
- Note whether the noise occurs only under high load, in high temperatures or continuously.
- Record warning lights, reduced power or other symptoms for the dealer.
Fuel types and additives Ford says to avoid
The current F-150 fuel-quality guidance recommends Top Tier detergent gasoline where available and lists several products or blends to avoid. Follow the exact wording in your manual, but the cited guidance warns against:
- Gasoline below 87 octane.
- E85 or any fuel containing more than 15 percent ethanol.
- Methanol-containing fuel.
- Metallic additives, including MMT.
- Leaded gasoline.
Ford warns that fuel sold as regular in some high-altitude areas can be below 87 octane. Using sub-87 fuel can cause engine damage and may not be covered by the warranty in the cited manual context. If a station’s labeling is unclear, choose a fuel that plainly meets the required rating rather than trying to compensate with an additive.

How to verify your exact vehicle
- Identify the vehicle and model year, such as an F-150 or Bronco, because the 2.7L engine appears in more than one application.
- Open the owner’s manual to the fuel-quality or fuel-selection section. For older trucks, also check the engine-specifications section.
- Look for the minimum pump octane, expressed in U.S. manuals as (R+M)/2, and note any separate premium recommendation.
- Check the fuel-door label and the manual for ethanol limits and prohibited fuel types.
- Apply the recommendation to your use: regular for the stated minimum requirement, or premium when you want Ford’s recommended performance under towing, heat or other severe-duty conditions.
Do not generalize from one manual to every Ford vehicle with this engine. A 2015 F-150 instruction is evidence for that vehicle and year; it is not a substitute for the manual covering a different model, market or calibration.

- Confusing a recommendation with a requirement: 91 or higher may be recommended for performance while 87 remains the minimum operating grade.
- Using a lower grade during travel: high-altitude pumps may label fuel as regular even when it is below the minimum specified for the vehicle.
- Expecting guaranteed savings: Ford does not publish a universal MPG improvement or payback period for premium.
- Ignoring the market: U.S. octane labels and (R+M)/2 notation may not match labels in other countries.
- Using additives to solve a mechanical problem: Ford lists several additive categories to avoid, and persistent knock requires diagnosis rather than an improvised octane treatment.
