No documented source reviewed here establishes an oil problem with the 2027 Corvette’s new LS6 V8. The confusion appears to come from a separate GM parts restriction involving certain older Corvette Z06 and ZR1 engines—the LT6 and LT7. GM describes the restriction as related to “Possible Engine Failure,” but its notice does not identify an oil-system defect or say every covered engine has failed.
Which Corvette V8 is new, and which engines are restricted?
Chevrolet identifies the 6.7-liter LS6 as the engine for the 2027 Corvette Stingray and Grand Sport. It is not the same engine as the LT6 in the Z06 or the LT7 in the ZR1. Chevrolet’s published output figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
| Corvette application | Engine | Architecture | Chevrolet-published output |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 Stingray and Grand Sport | 6.7L LS6 | Naturally aspirated V8 | 535 hp; 520 lb-ft |
| Z06 | 5.5L LT6 | Naturally aspirated V8 | 670 hp; 460 lb-ft |
| ZR1 | 5.5L LT7 | Twin-turbo V8 | 1,064 hp; 828 lb-ft |
Chevrolet’s 2027 Corvette engine overview describes the LS6, LT6 and LT7 as distinct engines with different applications. The available GM notices about an engine parts restriction concern particular LT6 and LT7 model years, not the new LS6.
What GM’s LT6 and LT7 restriction says
In October 2025, GM TechLink reported a parts restriction for 2023–2026 Corvette Z06 models with the LT6 and 2025–2026 Corvette ZR1 models with the LT7. The related PIP6089 service information states the condition as “Possible Engine Failure” and directs technicians to contact GM’s Technical Assistance Center for case-specific requests. See the GM TechLink notice and the reproduced PIP6089 bulletin.

#1 Best Overall
- Contains synthetic fibers, which help promote clean oil - to support long engine life and performance
- Removes more contaminants than conventional filters
- Reduces resistance to oil flow while improving filter efficiency
The bulletin asks technicians to document observations such as whether an engine is seized or making noise, whether there is excessive metal in the oil, whether oil or coolant is leaking, and whether diagnostic trouble codes are present. Those are diagnostic questions—not findings that every restricted engine has these symptoms, and not proof that oil is the root cause.
The notices reviewed do not identify a specific oil-system defect, state a failure rate, give a count of affected vehicles, or prescribe an owner-facing oil product or repair. A parts restriction and a diagnostic checklist should not be read as confirmation of a widespread oil failure.

How to check oil on an LT6
The LT6 uses a dry-sump system with an external oil tank, so its level reading depends on the checking conditions. GM’s service guidance says to check the level with the engine warm and idling; a cold reading can be misleading, and GM says not to add oil based on a cold reading. Follow the owner’s manual and service procedure for the specific model year.
For an LT6 oil change, GM says technicians must open both the external tank drain and the lower crankcase drain. Leaving either one closed can lead to overfilling and potential drivability or engine-damage concerns. The guidance is detailed in GM TechLink’s Corvette 5.5L V8 oil-change service item.

What an owner should do if a Corvette shows symptoms
- If you are checking an LT6’s oil level: use the warm-engine, idling procedure for your model year. Do not top up based only on a cold reading.
- If you notice engine noise, a leak, metal in the oil, or a warning: contact a Chevrolet dealer or qualified Corvette service provider promptly. PIP6089 is technician-facing; it calls for documenting the condition and seeking GM assistance, not for an owner to diagnose the issue or install generic parts.
- If you own a 2027 Stingray or Grand Sport with the LS6: the cited LT6/LT7 restriction does not establish that your engine has the same issue. The reviewed sources do not connect the LS6 to an oil defect.
What is known—and what is not
GM has documented a parts restriction for specified LT6 and LT7 model years because of possible engine failure, and its service information includes oil-related observations in a technician diagnostic checklist. That is not the same as a confirmed oil-system defect, and it does not establish that the 2027 LS6 has an oil problem. The available sources do not establish an oil-leak or oil-consumption rate, a root cause, or a universal owner repair.
