Yes—for many campsites, cottage roads and gear-heavy destinations, the Canadian-market 2024 Toyota RAV4 Trail has a useful mix of all-wheel-drive hardware, terrain-control features, cargo space and available towing capacity. That does not make it a purpose-built vehicle for severe technical trails, and its towing limit depends on configuration: Toyota’s 2024 owner-manual reference lists different ratings with and without a towing package.
What the Trail adds for getting beyond paved roads
The 2024 Trail is based on the XLE. Toyota Canada lists Trail-specific 19-inch alloy wheels, a Dynamic Torque Vectoring Differential with Rear Driveline Disconnect, Multi-Terrain Select, LED fog lamps and bridge-type roof rails. It also includes SofTex upholstery, wireless charging, a 120V/100W cargo-area outlet, and cargo-side and luggage nets. These are manufacturer-listed features, not proof of performance on any particular trail or surface. Toyota Canada’s 2024 RAV4 announcement describes the Trail as an off-roading SUV; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent test result.
Multi-Terrain Select is a named traction-control feature on the gas Trail. It may be relevant when conditions change, but the available specifications do not establish how the vehicle performs on a given route. Nor do they establish the Trail’s ground clearance, approach and departure angles, tire suitability or underbody protection. Those details matter when deciding whether a route includes obstacles that could exceed what a road-oriented crossover can safely handle.
How much can the 2024 RAV4 Trail tow?
Toyota’s 2024 RAV4 owner-manual page lists a trailer-weight rating of 1,500 lb (680 kg) without the towing package and 3,500 lb (1,590 kg) with it. This is a US-market manual reference, so do not assume the same equipment or labeling applies to every Canadian Trail. Check the exact vehicle’s market-specific owner’s manual, labels and towing equipment before relying on either number. The rating is not a guarantee that every trailer under that weight is appropriate. Include the trailer’s loaded weight and consider applicable vehicle, hitch and local requirements. If you are shopping for an installed hitch or wiring, confirm exact fit and configuration rather than choosing by model year and trim name alone.
Is there enough room for people and gear?
Toyota Canada’s 2024 gas-product summary lists maximum cargo capacity of 1,059 L (37.4 cu ft) behind the second row and 1,977 L (69.8 cu ft) behind the front seats. Those figures give a useful sense of the space available for luggage and equipment, but actual fit depends on the objects being carried and how the vehicle is configured. The Trail’s listed cargo-side and luggage nets are included equipment, while its cargo-area outlet is rated at 120V/100W. - Trips with bulky gear: The published cargo capacities and included nets support carrying equipment inside; roof carrying requires confirmed crossbar fit and load limits.
- Light trailer use: The manual’s higher figure applies only to a vehicle with the required towing package in the cited US-market documentation. Confirm the exact Canadian vehicle and account for the loaded trailer.
- Severe or technical trails: The listed features do not establish suitability for rock crawling or other demanding terrain. Route conditions, vehicle geometry, tires and protection are material, and the specifications cited here do not resolve those questions.
What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you
The evidence for the Trail’s capability here consists of Toyota’s published equipment and cargo specifications plus a US-market owner-manual towing reference. It does not include independent comparative testing, real-world towing reports, fuel-economy results or reliability outcomes. One owner-forum post asks, “People with the Trail edition and tow stuff around, how’s your experience?”—that is an individual question, not a survey or evidence of typical ownership. The forum post is useful as an example of what owners may want to know, but it does not establish performance.
