No confirmed electric MX-5 Miata has been announced. A Mazda “Vision Study Model” render drew attention after appearing in a presentation segment discussed alongside the MX-5, but Mazda’s published strategy materials do not identify it as a production successor. The company has outlined broader electrification plans, including an in-house battery EV planned for 2027, without saying that vehicle will be an MX-5.
What the Vision Study Model does—and does not—tell us
Mazda’s November 22, 2022 update to its mid-term management plan and policy through 2030 described a phased approach to electrification. A discussion posted the same day on the MX-5 Owners Club forum noted brief glimpses of a rendered “Vision Study Model” between clips of earlier MX-5 generations and speculated that it might hint at an electric replacement. That is forum interpretation, not a statement of Mazda’s intent.
The render’s placement prompted the question, but it does not establish that Mazda has approved a production car based on the design. Mazda’s official strategy sources reviewed here do not call the Vision Study Model an MX-5 successor or announce a production electric MX-5. What Mazda has officially said about electrification
A company-wide 2030 estimate
In its November 22, 2022 announcement, Mazda estimated that battery EVs would account for 25%–40% of its global sales in 2030. This is a company-wide forecast, not an MX-5 target or a commitment to make any particular model electric. Mazda described a phased strategy intended to accommodate different regional conditions and product approaches.

Mazda’s current management-policy page describes Phase 2 as running from 2025 through 2027 and includes the start of global BEV launches. The policy is about Mazda’s broader lineup; it does not assign an MX-5 to that phase. (Mazda’s 2022 announcement; Mazda 2030 Vision and management policy)
An in-house BEV planned for 2027
Mazda’s 2025 Multi-Solution Briefing says its in-house battery EV is planned for launch in 2027. The briefing does not name that vehicle as an MX-5. A planned launch for an unspecified company EV should not be read as the launch date for an electric Miata. (Mazda Multi-Solution Briefing 2025)

Is an electric Miata confirmed, and what are its specs?
The official materials cited here do not confirm a production electric MX-5 or provide an MX-5 launch date, powertrain, price, range, or production specifications. They also do not establish that the Vision Study Model is a production preview. Until Mazda makes a model-specific announcement, claims about an electric Miata’s timing or technical details remain unconfirmed.
There are therefore no confirmed production electric MX-5 versions or specifications to compare. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Mazda has a company-wide electrification strategy and a planned in-house BEV launch in 2027, but neither establishes that the MX-5 will be that vehicle.
