Kawasaki’s 2026 KLX230 Sherpa S ABS and KLX230 DF share a 233cc engine, six-speed transmission and dual-sport format, but they emphasize different priorities. The Sherpa S has the lower seat; the DF has more suspension travel and ground clearance, plus a rear carrier and protective equipment. Kawasaki announced both for the U.S. on June 10, 2025. Its launch prices differ from the MSRPs on its current 2026 specification sheets, so the two snapshots should not be confused with a local dealer’s transaction price.

What do the KLX230 Sherpa S and DF have in common?

Kawasaki’s current U.S. specification sheets describe both as 233cc, air-cooled, fuel-injected, four-stroke singles with six-speed transmissions, ABS, and 2.0-gallon fuel capacities. Each uses a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not results from an independent comparison test.

The model names are easy to mix up: the Sherpa in this U.S. launch is the KLX230 Sherpa S ABS, while the DF is listed on its current sheet as the KLX230 DF ABS.

How do their specifications compare?

Specification 2026 KLX230 Sherpa S ABS 2026 KLX230 DF ABS
Engine 233cc, air-cooled, fuel-injected four-stroke single 233cc, air-cooled, fuel-injected four-stroke single
Transmission Six-speed Six-speed
Fuel capacity 2.0 gallons 2.0 gallons
Seat height 32.5 inches 33.3 inches
Front/rear suspension travel 6.2 / 6.6 inches 7.9 / 8.8 inches
Ground clearance 8.5 inches 9.4 inches
Wheels 21-inch front, 18-inch rear 21-inch front, 18-inch rear
Curb weight 297.7 lb, manufacturer-listed 302.1 lb, manufacturer-listed
Current U.S. specification-sheet MSRP $5,899 $5,999

Figures are from Kawasaki’s current 2026 U.S. model sheets; prices can change and do not establish a dealer’s selling price. The comparison describes listed dimensions and equipment, not a finding that either motorcycle will fit a particular rider or perform better on a trail.

Which one has the lower seat?

The Sherpa S ABS has a listed seat height of 32.5 inches, 0.8 inch lower than the DF’s 33.3 inches. That makes the Sherpa S the lower-seat option on paper. Seat height alone cannot determine whether a rider can comfortably reach the ground: rider inseam, seat shape, suspension sag and riding posture also matter.

Does the DF have more suspension travel and clearance?

Yes. Kawasaki lists the DF with 7.9 inches of front and 8.8 inches of rear suspension travel, compared with 6.2 and 6.6 inches on the Sherpa S. The DF also has 9.4 inches of ground clearance versus 8.5 inches for the Sherpa S. These are meaningful specification differences, but they do not by themselves establish which bike is more capable or comfortable in real-world riding.

What equipment differs?

Kawasaki lists a tubeless rear tire, hand guards and an aluminum skid plate among the Sherpa S’s features. The DF specification sheet lists engine guards, hand guards and an aluminum skid plate; Kawasaki’s launch announcement also describes a standard rear carrier. The documented distinction is therefore in the stated equipment, not an independent assessment of protection or cargo capacity.

How much do the 2026 models cost?

Kawasaki’s June 10, 2025 U.S. announcement gave launch MSRPs of $5,699 for the Sherpa S ABS and $5,799 for the DF. Kawasaki’s current 2026 U.S. specification sheets list $5,899 and $5,999, respectively. The launch figures and current sheet figures are separate manufacturer price snapshots; neither is a quote for a specific dealer, nor does MSRP establish the final transaction cost.

The same 2025 announcement said the motorcycles were “Now” available. That was launch-era wording, not confirmation of inventory in October 2026. Check with a Kawasaki dealer for current stock and pricing.

How should a buyer choose between them?

  • Prioritize the lower listed seat: the Sherpa S is the lower option at 32.5 inches.
  • Prioritize listed travel and clearance: the DF has more front and rear suspension travel and 0.9 inch more ground clearance.
  • Compare included equipment: Kawasaki lists a tubeless rear tire for the Sherpa S, and engine guards plus a rear carrier for the DF; both sheets list hand guards and an aluminum skid plate.
  • Compare listed price and weight: the current sheets put the DF $100 higher and list it 4.4 lb heavier. These are manufacturer figures, not local transaction prices or independent weigh-ins.

Kawasaki’s launch release framed the Sherpa S as a motorcycle intended to “inspire confidence on and off the beaten path,” and called the DF an “ultimate heavy-duty two-wheeled companion.” Those are the manufacturer’s promotional descriptions, not independently verified ride impressions. The available specifications support comparing dimensions and equipment, but not conclusions about reliability, real-world range or comparative performance.
