Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as using the vehicle’s installed Full Self-Driving computer to process camera input and neural networks. Its published materials here do not provide RAM capacities or a RAM minimum for each Autopilot computer generation, so a specific performance or feature difference cannot be attributed to RAM alone.
Which computer matters for FSD?
Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual says Full Self-Driving (Supervised) uses camera inputs from the front, rear, left, and right of the vehicle to build a model of its surroundings. The installed Full Self-Driving computer processes neural networks and makes decisions to guide the vehicle; Tesla also says FSD capability evolves through over-the-air updates.

That description identifies the driving computer and its software as relevant to FSD. It does not identify infotainment memory as a factor in driving features. Infotainment RAM and the Autopilot/FSD computer should not be treated as interchangeable specifications.
What Tesla publishes about RAM—and what it does not
The cited owner manual does not state the Full Self-Driving computer’s RAM capacity or a minimum RAM requirement for FSD. Tesla’s cited service documents identify computer generations and describe service procedures, but do not provide a comparative RAM specification. They therefore do not support claims that a lower RAM amount alone slows FSD, disables a feature, or limits a particular capability.

Computer generations may differ in hardware and supported configurations, but that is not proof of a RAM-specific effect. Avoid comparing vehicles on RAM figures unless Tesla publishes a specification for the exact computer and the claim is supported by that information.
How to check which Autopilot computer your Tesla has

- On the touchscreen, open Controls > Software.
- Confirm the Autopilot computer type shown there.
- Open Additional Vehicle Information for further vehicle details.
Tesla service material gives examples of the labels: “2.0 Computer” indicates HW2.0, “2.5 Computer” indicates HW2.5, and “Full self-driving computer” indicates HW3.0. Tesla’s Model Y Car Computer (Remove and Replace) service procedures also document HW3 and HW4 car-computer work. These labels identify hardware generation; they do not establish a RAM capacity.

Tesla cautions that, depending on market region, vehicle configuration, options purchased, Autopilot hardware, and software version, a vehicle may not have FSD (Supervised), or the feature may not operate exactly as described in the manual. Availability is therefore not reducible to a single memory figure. When comparing two cars, check the installed computer, exact model and year, market, software version, and included or purchased feature package.

Tesla’s AI Computer Installations page describes an upgrade eligibility pathway for some vehicles with Autopilot hardware 2.0 or 2.5 and purchased FSD. It is not a promise of a universal retrofit or owner-installed RAM upgrade. Ask Tesla to confirm current eligibility for the individual vehicle in the relevant market.

Tesla says FSD (Supervised) requires a fully attentive driver, displays escalating warnings requiring a response, and requires the driver to be ready to take over at all times while it is engaged. It is a supervised driving feature, not a statement that the vehicle is autonomous.

What to do if you are troubleshooting a specific car
- Use the touchscreen steps above to identify the installed Autopilot computer.
- Check the vehicle’s software version and whether the desired feature is available for its configuration and market.
- For an upgrade or a suspected hardware fault, contact Tesla and ask about that vehicle’s eligibility and service options; do not assume a generic RAM kit is compatible with the driving computer.
