Yes, but suspension is not a pothole-proofing system. A well-designed suspension can reduce the sharp jolts and vibrations that reach the rider, especially when it is matched with suitable tires and wheels. The improvement depends on suspension travel, spring and damping settings, tire construction and pressure, wheel size, speed, and the road surface. Suspension cannot make a hidden or deep pothole safe, and no reliable evidence establishes a universal percentage reduction in crashes, injuries, or impact force.
What suspension changes when you hit a pothole
An electric scooter normally sends road forces through the tire, wheel, fork or swingarm, deck, and finally the rider. A pothole creates a rapid change in wheel position. Without enough compliance, the tire and frame transmit more of that event as a sharp impact and vibration.

Suspension adds a spring-and-damper system between the wheel and the scooter structure. The spring allows the wheel to move relative to the frame; the damper controls how quickly that movement occurs. In principle, this lets the wheel follow an uneven surface while reducing the acceleration felt through the handlebars, deck, and rider’s feet.
The European Road Safety Observatory’s 2024 Thematic Report: Personal Mobility Devices treats stability as a design priority and identifies larger wheels, wider and more pliant tires, and improved shock absorbers as measures relevant to potholes and other bumps. The report says improvements to shock absorbers are needed to help avoid falls caused by potholes or road bumps. That is safety guidance, not a quantified test of a particular consumer scooter.

A 2003 SAE International paper, Development of Scooter Suspensions for Comfort Optimization, modeled a scooter over a reproduced rough-road profile and examined suspension geometry, shock-absorber stiffness, and damping using laboratory, test-track, and real-road work. It supports the engineering conclusion that suspension characteristics affect comfort, but it is not a modern, same-model comparison of electric kick scooters with and without suspension.
Why suspension alone does not determine comfort
Ride quality is the result of several parts working together. A scooter can have visible suspension and still feel harsh if its tires are narrow or overinflated, its damping is poorly matched, or it is ridden too quickly for the available travel.
Speed and surface roughness
A 2026 study in Machines, titled Multibody Dynamic Analysis of an E-Scooter Considering Asymmetric Tire Stiffness, Speed, and Surface Roughness, modeled an urban e-scooter without additional suspension across combinations of tire stiffness, speed, and pavement roughness. In that model, speed and roughness dominated the comfort response, while tire stiffness had a smaller but measurable effect. The model reported an adjusted R² of 93.84%; that statistic describes the study’s model fit, not injury reduction or a universal suspension benefit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe practical implication is important: even a capable suspension cannot cancel the effect of entering a deep hole quickly. Slowing before the rough section usually changes the impact more than searching for a single suspension specification.
Tires and tire pressure
Air-filled tires deform around small surface irregularities and provide a first layer of compliance. Xiaomi’s support material says its inflatable Mi scooter tires provide some shock absorption over small potholes and speed bumps and contrasts them with solid tires that transmit more vibration. This is a manufacturer statement, not an independent head-to-head test.

Solid tires eliminate punctures caused by tubes and reduce pressure checks, but their limited deformation can make sharp-edged potholes feel more abrupt. Pneumatic tires generally offer more compliance, but they can puncture, lose pressure, or pinch the tube if ridden hard at an incorrect pressure.
Use the pressure range printed by the scooter manufacturer. Do not deliberately reduce pressure below the specified limit as a comfort fix: underinflation can damage the tire or rim, worsen steering, increase rolling resistance, and make the tire detach or bottom out.
Wheel diameter and width
Larger wheels roll over an obstacle at a shallower approach angle than small wheels, so they are less likely to drop abruptly into a shallow depression. Wider, more pliant tires can add stability and compliance. These characteristics help, but they do not guarantee that a wheel will clear a deep or square-edged pothole.
How to compare scooters for rough roads
When two models are being considered, compare the complete system rather than the word “suspension” on a specification sheet.
| Specification | What to check | Why it matters on potholes |
|---|---|---|
| Suspension layout | Front fork, rear suspension, dual suspension, elastomer, spring, or hydraulic design | Different layouts control different wheel movements; a front-only system does not isolate the rear wheel or deck from every impact. |
| Suspension travel | Stated travel in millimetres, and whether the figure is maximum travel | More available movement can provide more room to absorb a bump, but travel alone does not reveal spring rate, damping, or bottom-out behavior. |
| Wheel and tire size | Diameter, width, pneumatic or solid construction, tubed or tubeless design | Larger wheels and compliant pneumatic tires generally handle small irregularities more gently. |
| Recommended pressure | Manufacturer’s pressure range and how easily it can be checked | Incorrect pressure changes handling, impact harshness, puncture risk, and rim protection. |
| Handling equipment | Deck length, handlebar width, brake response, lighting, and rider stance | Control and balance determine whether the rider can react to a hole; suspension cannot compensate for poor control. |
| Intended terrain and mass | Published terrain limits, maximum load, and scooter weight | A commuter model may not be designed for repeated rough-road impacts, even if it has suspension. |
As a concrete example, Xiaomi’s UK product page lists the Electric Scooter 5 Plus with 12-inch tubeless tires and front dual-spring shock absorption with a maximum 30 mm of travel. Xiaomi says those features reduce bump vibration and improve rough-terrain performance. The 30 mm figure is a product specification, not evidence that this model is the safest or most comfortable choice for every pothole-filled route. Regional specifications and availability can change, so check the manufacturer’s current page for the market where you will buy.

How to ride over potholes more safely
Suspension works best when the rider gives it a manageable input. Treat every pothole as a hazard, not as a test of the scooter’s travel.

Look beyond the front wheel for depressions, patched asphalt, drain covers, loose gravel, and standing water. Rainwater can hide the depth and edge of a pothole.
- Reduce speed before the hole. Braking or turning abruptly while the front wheel is already entering the depression can reduce traction and balance. Slow in a straight line when there is room.
- Choose a clear line. If safe and legal, steer around the hole rather than through it. Check behind and beside you before changing position.
- Keep the scooter upright. Avoid crossing a sharp hole with the wheels turned. A wheel that strikes at an angle can deflect sideways.
- Keep both hands on the bars and knees slightly flexed. A relaxed stance lets your arms and legs absorb motion while maintaining steering control. Do not lock your elbows or jump off the deck.
- Do not rely on a splash. A water-filled depression may be much deeper than it appears. Treat it as an unknown obstacle.
- Check the scooter afterward. Look for a tire bulge, loss of pressure, rim damage, loose headset or handlebar hardware, unusual brake rubbing, and new play in a suspension joint.
Transport for London scooter-safety research specifically flags potholes as problematic, particularly when rainwater hides them, because traction or balance can be lost. Suspension may reduce the severity of the jolt, but it does not remove those failure modes.
What suspension specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Travel is not the same as absorption capacity
“30 mm maximum travel,” for example, tells you how far the suspension is claimed to move under its specified conditions. It does not state the force at the handlebars, the amount of vibration reaching the deck, or how the system behaves at different rider weights and speeds. A short, well-damped system can feel better than a longer system that bottoms out or rebounds sharply.
Spring and damping details matter
Spring stiffness determines how much force is needed to move the suspension. Damping controls rebound and compression speed. If compression damping is too light, the scooter may dive or bottom out; if rebound is too slow, the wheel may not recover quickly for a series of bumps. Consumer scooter specifications often omit these settings, making a test ride or a detailed service manual more informative than travel alone.
Front-only versus dual suspension
Front suspension can reduce shocks arriving through the handlebar and front wheel. A rear system can reduce movement transmitted through the deck and rear wheel. Neither arrangement automatically solves every rough-road problem. Tire pressure, wheel size, rider position, and the timing of braking still influence the result.

Maintenance that preserves the benefit
- Check pneumatic pressure before rough-road rides and use the manufacturer’s stated range.
- Inspect tires for cuts, bulges, embedded debris, and uneven wear.
- Check that suspension fasteners, axle hardware, and headset components are tight according to the service instructions.
- Look for oil leakage, bent parts, cracked mounts, or a new knocking sound. Stop riding if a structural or steering component appears damaged.
- Keep suspension pivots and seals clean, but do not apply an unapproved lubricant that can damage seals or attract abrasive grit.
- Stay within the published rider-weight and terrain limits. Repeated bottoming is a sign that the route, load, speed, or setup exceeds what the scooter can handle.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Buying by suspension label alone
Problem: A listing says “shock absorption” but gives no travel, tire details, or terrain guidance.
Fix: Ask for the suspension layout, stated travel, tire construction, pressure range, maximum load, and warranty or service information. If a value is not published, treat it as unknown rather than assuming premium performance.
Running tires too soft
Problem: The rider lowers pressure to imitate a softer suspension.
Fix: Stay within the manufacturer’s range and inspect for pinch damage or rim strikes. A pressure gauge is more reliable than judging a tire by thumb pressure.

Entering potholes too fast
Problem: The rider expects suspension to protect against any road defect.

Fix: Scan early, slow before the obstacle, keep the scooter upright, and avoid hidden water. Speed remains one of the strongest contributors to the severity of a rough-road event.
Ignoring post-impact damage
Problem: The scooter feels rideable after a hard strike, but a tire, rim, axle, or headset has been damaged.
Fix: Perform the inspection checklist before continuing. A new wobble, brake rub, loose steering, or repeated suspension knock warrants service before the next ride.
So, is suspension worth paying for?
For a route with frequent patched asphalt, shallow potholes, and speed-bump transitions, suspension can make the ride less jarring when combined with pneumatic tires, adequate wheel size, correct pressure, and sensible speed. It may also reduce fatigue and help the wheels track uneven surfaces.
It is less useful as a reason to ride faster or to choose a heavier scooter without considering portability, braking, and handling. A large wheel and well-maintained air tire may improve a modestly rough commute more than a poorly tuned suspension system. For severe potholes, the safest choice is still to slow down, avoid the defect when possible, or dismount and walk if the route cannot be negotiated with control.
The available evidence supports suspension as one relevant design measure, not as a guarantee. No controlled, same-model real-world comparison establishes a universal impact or crash reduction for electric kick scooters with suspension versus those without it.
