For India, official government material reports no widespread engine failure or abnormal wear attributable to E20 when it is used under prescribed conditions. Some vehicles may, however, use more fuel: the Press Information Bureau (PIB) cites a possible 3–5% fuel-economy reduction, while a separate PIB release reports Maruti Suzuki’s estimate of 3–3.5%. Neither figure predicts the result for every car or two-wheeler. Check compatibility for your exact make, model and year with its manufacturer.
Can E20 damage your engine?
The government’s published account of laboratory studies, field trials and manufacturer service data does not show widespread E20-caused engine failure or abnormal wear under prescribed conditions. That is a fleet-level summary of the evidence, not a guarantee that every individual vehicle is compatible or can never develop a problem.
In a July 2026 parliamentary reply published by PIB, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said evaluations involved ARAI, SIAM, IOCL, IIP and vehicle manufacturers. The stated test areas included engine durability, drivability, startability, corrosion resistance, material compatibility, emissions and fuel efficiency. The Ministry described E20 as safe for use “under prescribed standards.” Read the PIB release dated 30 July 2026.
A separate Ministry response to a Rajya Sabha question, published on 17 December 2025, also summarizes the government’s account of testing and service data. How much mileage might E20 reduce?
There is no single model-by-model figure established for every vehicle in the cited sources. The available estimates should be kept distinct rather than averaged:

These figures are estimates with different attributions, not a guaranteed loss for your vehicle. The cited sources do not establish an independently verified E20 mileage result for each model.

Why mileage can change even if E20 is not the only cause
A change in fuel economy after filling E20 does not, by itself, show that the fuel caused it. The PIB FAQ names driving habits, tyre pressure, servicing and air-conditioner use as factors affecting mileage. The PIB release reporting Maruti Suzuki’s estimate also notes driving style, maintenance, tyre pressure and traffic as influences.
- Check tyre pressure against the vehicle maker’s recommended figures.
- Consider whether traffic, route, speed or driving style has changed.
- Keep up with scheduled servicing and account for air-conditioner use when comparing trips.
For a useful comparison, track fuel use over multiple similar journeys rather than drawing a conclusion from one tank or one trip. A tyre-pressure gauge can help check pressure, but it is routine maintenance equipment—not an E20-specific fix.

How to check whether your vehicle is compatible
Do not infer compatibility from registration year alone. NITI Aayog’s ethanol-blending roadmap says the manufacturer defines a vehicle’s compatibility with a particular ethanol blend. The roadmap is a policy document, not a compatibility list for every vehicle. Read NITI Aayog’s Roadmap for Ethanol Blending in India: 2020–2025.
- Find the owner’s manual for your exact make, model and model year; look for the specified petrol or ethanol-blend compatibility.
- If the manual is unclear, ask the manufacturer or an authorised service centre, giving them the exact model and year.
- Follow the vehicle maker’s guidance rather than assuming that a result for another model or an entire vehicle fleet applies to yours.
Government sources report no significant variation or abnormal wear in the legacy-vehicle trials and service data they cite. That does not resolve the compatibility of every older vehicle, so model-specific manufacturer guidance remains the practical check.

What official fuel-quality monitoring does—and does not—tell you
