Costco’s published tire-service information does not promise replacement of failed tire-pressure sensors. It says that TPMS valve stems and accessories cost extra, which is not the same as confirming that a Tire Center diagnoses and replaces a failed sensor. Service availability and pricing are not stated universally, so contact your local warehouse with your vehicle details before booking.
What Costco’s published policy does—and does not—say
Costco says its tire service includes new rubber valve stems and notes that “TPMS valve stems and accessories will be an additional charge.” The wording distinguishes those items from standard rubber stems, but it does not establish that failed TPMS sensors are routinely diagnosed or replaced. Costco’s tire-service benefits page does not publish a universal sensor-replacement price or guarantee that every warehouse offers the work.
A TPMS valve stem or service accessory is not necessarily the electronic sensor. Ask the Tire Center directly whether it can diagnose the warning and replace the sensor on your specific vehicle, rather than assuming that a tire service or stem charge covers sensor replacement.
Why the right sensor and procedure depend on your vehicle
Direct and indirect TPMS are different
NHTSA describes direct TPMS as using sensors located in the tires that send information to an onboard processor. Indirect TPMS instead uses wheel-speed and other vehicle sensors. An in-wheel sensor replacement is relevant only for a vehicle with a direct system when diagnosis points to that sensor. See NHTSA’s tire-safety information.

NHTSA says passenger cars, light trucks, and vans from model year 2008 onward are required to have TPMS; some 2006–2007 vehicles also have it. That regulatory overview does not identify the system or replacement part for an individual car, so provide the shop with the year, make, and model.
Sensor replacement may require registration
Depending on the vehicle, a replacement sensor may need to be registered to the car’s monitoring system with a scan tool or through another manufacturer-specified procedure. A Mitsubishi service-manual supplement hosted by NHTSA, for example, instructs technicians to register the sensor ID with a scan tool if the transmitter is replaced; that instruction applies to the vehicles covered by that document, not all cars. A Subaru service-program document hosted by NHTSA says re-registration is not required after tire replacement under that program, except when a sensor needs replacement; in that case it directs technicians to the applicable service-manual procedure. This is a Subaru-specific example, not a universal rule. Subaru service-program instructions.
What to ask before booking
Call the specific Costco Tire Center and give the representative your vehicle’s year, make, and model, plus what the warning light is doing. Ask:

- If diagnosis identifies a failed sensor, will you replace it with a compatible part?
- Does the service include installation and any required sensor registration or relearn?
- What is the total installed price, including diagnosis, parts, labor, and programming or registration?
- Do I need an appointment, and is the service available at this location?
Having the warning’s behavior available—for example, whether it stays on or flashes—can help the shop understand the issue, but diagnosis should determine the cause rather than the warning alone.

If the local Costco cannot confirm the work, ask a dealer or qualified repair shop for diagnosis and an itemized quote. Costco’s Auto Program parts-and-service benefit applies at participating service centers, but Costco says the discount does not apply to work performed at Costco Tire Centers. The benefit page does not establish that a participating center offers TPMS service, so verify both availability and discount terms before relying on it.
