Yes, but not in one universal way. Color is associated with different used-car asking prices, darker paint can increase solar heat loads, and some crash analyses link less-conspicuous colors with higher risk. None of these findings proves that a particular color will guarantee a higher resale price, a cooler cabin, or safer driving. The useful choice depends on the vehicle segment, local demand, sun exposure, lighting and weather, and the car’s condition and equipment.
Think of color as a secondary buying factor. It can influence the market and thermal comfort at the margins, while model desirability, mileage, condition, maintenance history, trim and accident history usually determine far more of a vehicle’s value and usability.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
| Question | What the available evidence shows | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Resale value | Color is correlated with different depreciation rates in a large U.S. listing analysis. Yellow, orange and green ranked well overall; gold, white and black ranked poorly overall. | The data are listing prices, not guaranteed completed-sale prices, and the ranking changes by body style and segment. |
| Heat | In a controlled long-haul truck test, changing black paint to white reduced thermal rise and electric air-conditioning energy use. | Truck cab test sections, climate, glazing and test procedures do not produce a universal passenger-car temperature or fuel-economy figure. |
| Visibility and crash risk | A 2007 Australian analysis found higher risk relative to white for several colors, especially in daylight; a 2010 U.S. thesis found no statistically significant color effect. | Both are observational analyses from specific datasets. Weather, background, lighting, vehicle type and driver behavior can change conspicuity. |
These are associations under particular conditions, not guarantees. If two otherwise comparable cars differ only in color, the evidence can inform your choice. It should not override a substantially better-maintained car or a model with stronger local demand.
Resale value: color shows an association, not a guaranteed premium
What the large U.S. listing analysis found
iSeeCars’ 2025 analysis compared more than 1.2 million model-year 2022 used vehicles listed from August 2024 through May 2025. The analysis converted each vehicle’s original MSRP to 2025 dollars, compared that figure with the listing price and aggregated depreciation by color and body style. Across the entire sample, the average three-year depreciation was 31.0%.

Yellow cars averaged 24.0% three-year depreciation, while gold cars averaged 34.4%. In the overall ranking, yellow, orange and green were among the lowest-depreciation colors; gold, white and black were among the highest. Those percentages describe the study’s aggregated listings, not what any individual seller will receive. An advertised price can differ from the final transaction price, and the analysis does not make otherwise identical cars with different paint a controlled experiment.
iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer said, “Yellow and orange have been among the best colors for retained value since iSeeCars began tracking depreciation by color.” That observation describes a historical pattern in the company’s datasets, not a promise that a yellow example of your chosen model will outperform every white, black or blue example.
Why the ranking changes by vehicle segment
The same color can signal a different buyer preference in a sedan, pickup, minivan, sports car or crossover. The iSeeCars results changed when vehicles were grouped by body style, which means an overall color leaderboard can be misleading for a specific purchase. A vivid color may be scarce and desirable on a performance coupe but difficult to sell on a conservative fleet-oriented sedan. A neutral color may be expected on a luxury SUV and therefore attract more shoppers in one market than another.

Rarity can help one seller and hurt another
A working paper by Matthias Fuchs and Martin Schreier examined 520,190 used-car listings. Its field analysis associated color uniqueness with lower asking prices for professional sellers but with higher asking prices for individual sellers. The authors also ran controlled experiments involving sneakers and furniture, not cars. The finding therefore supports a narrower conclusion: seller type and market context can change how buyers respond to unusual colors. It is not a direct price forecast for your vehicle. The paper is available from the Marketing Science Institute.
What matters more when you sell
Color does not erase the effects of mileage, mechanical condition, service records, accident history, rust, tire condition, options, trim and model reputation. A desirable color on a neglected car is unlikely to compensate for deferred maintenance. Conversely, a well-documented, clean example in a less fashionable color can be easier to sell than a damaged example in a supposedly high-value shade.
Heat: darker paint can add solar load, but the test conditions matter
What the truck experiment measured
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Volvo Group Trucks Technology, PPG Industries and collaborators tested painted long-haul truck cab sections, called test bucks, at the Vehicle Testing and Integration Facility in Golden, Colorado. In the tested setup, switching from black to white paint produced a 31.1% reduction in rise over ambient temperature relative to the maximum possible reduction. The same change reduced daily electric air-conditioning energy use by 20.8%.

Those are useful measurements of paint’s contribution to a truck’s solar envelope and thermal loads. They are not a claim that every white passenger car uses 20.8% less fuel or that its interior will be 31.1% cooler. Truck geometry, roof area, glazing, insulation, ventilation, weather and the air-conditioning system all differ from those of a compact car or crossover. What the result means for ordinary cars
Opaque exterior paint determines how much sunlight a body panel absorbs and how much heat it transfers toward the cabin. Dark finishes generally absorb more solar energy than light or solar-reflective finishes, but the roof, windows, headliner, insulation, seat materials, ventilation and air-conditioning capacity also affect the temperature you feel.
The NREL paper cites earlier light-duty-vehicle work by Levinson and colleagues reporting a 4–6°C lower cabin-air temperature in a silver car than in a black car. That figure is a prior result summarized by the NREL paper; its publication year is not established in the cited passage, and it should not be treated as the direct result of the truck experiment.
When paint is most likely to matter
- Direct, prolonged sun: A parked car with a dark roof and body can accumulate more heat than a comparable light-colored car under the same exposure.
- Hot climates: Reducing the heat absorbed by the exterior can reduce the work required from the air conditioner after the vehicle is parked, although the size of the benefit depends on vehicle design.
- Large glazed areas: Windshield and side-window solar gain can dominate cabin heating, so paint color alone cannot predict interior temperature.
- Shade and parking habits: A garage or shade can matter more than a modest difference in paint absorption.
If heat is a major concern, compare roof and glass design, factory glass options, ventilation controls and your parking exposure along with exterior color. A lighter finish is a reasonable way to reduce one source of solar load, not a substitute for shade or an efficient climate-control system.
Visibility and crash risk: two credible analyses disagree
Findings from the Monash report
The Monash University Accident Research Centre’s 2007 Report 263 analyzed police-reported mass crashes in two Australian states. It used an induced-exposure design and separated results by vehicle type, light conditions and jurisdiction. Relative to white vehicles, it reported higher crash risk for several colors that scored lower on its visibility index, including black, blue, grey, green, red and silver. The relative-risk differences for listed colors reached about 10% in daylight, and the association was strongest in daylight conditions.

The report found no color statistically significantly safer than white. Its abstract states: “No colour was statistically significantly safer than white.” That wording is important: the analysis did not establish white as a guaranteed safety color, only that no other color achieved a statistically significant advantage over it in that dataset. The authors also noted that environmental factors could modify the association and needed further quantification.
A U.S. analysis found no significant color effect
Stephen O. Owusu-Ansah’s 2010 master’s thesis, published through the University of Dayton eCommons, used an induced-exposure framework and negative-binomial modeling. It concluded that no single color was significantly safer or riskier than white in its analysis. This null result does not invalidate the Monash findings; it shows that the estimated effect is sensitive to the data, location, model and controls used.
Why a universal day-or-night ranking is not justified
Conspicuity depends on contrast with the background, available light, weather, road design, traffic, vehicle shape and the observer’s attention. A color that contrasts with vegetation may blend into asphalt, buildings or darkness. Headlamps, daytime running lights, reflectors, brake lights, clean lenses and driver behavior also affect whether another road user notices a vehicle.

How to choose a color for your own purchase
1. Start with the exact vehicle and trim
Search the same model generation, body style, engine, drivetrain and trim before comparing colors. A color effect measured across millions of listings may disappear when options and mileage are controlled within one narrow model. Check whether a rare color is tied to a high-performance or luxury package; the package, not the pigment, may explain much of the price difference.
2. Check your local used market
Record asking prices and, where available, recent transaction data for comparable cars in your region. Note days on market, mileage, condition and equipment. If one shade appears repeatedly at a discount, that is more relevant to your resale decision than a national average. Remember that asking-price evidence is not the same as completed-sale evidence.
3. Match the color to your heat exposure
Estimate how often the vehicle will sit in direct sun, whether it has a garage, and how much glass and roof area it has. In a hot, sunny climate with outdoor parking, a light or reflective finish may reduce one component of heat gain. In a mild climate or mostly shaded parking, the practical difference may be small.
4. Treat visibility as a system, not a paint choice
Consider the roads and weather you actually drive in, then prioritize functioning headlights, tail lamps, indicators, reflectors, windshield clarity and sensible speeds. Do not reject a well-maintained car solely because a study found a statistical association for its color, and do not assume a white car is automatically safer.
5. Protect the factors buyers reliably inspect
- Keep service invoices and inspection records.
- Repair paint damage and corrosion promptly, regardless of color.
- Maintain tires, lamps, glass and interior condition.
- Choose equipment and a powertrain with strong demand in your area.
- When selling, photograph the car accurately and disclose repairs; trust is part of resale value.
A practical decision rule
Choose the color you can live with for years, then use evidence to break close calls. If two otherwise equal cars cost the same, favor the shade that is well-supported in your local segment and suits your sun exposure. If one car has markedly better condition, records, mileage or equipment, those advantages should usually outweigh a color ranking derived from an aggregated study.
In short, color can influence resale patterns and thermal load, and it may correlate with visibility in some crash data. The effects are conditional and sometimes contradictory. There is no universally best car color; the best choice is the one that fits your vehicle segment, local market, climate, parking conditions and safety habits.
