Does a New Tesla Come With a Charger? What Buyers Need to Know

Generally, no: Tesla says the Mobile Connector is not included with new vehicle orders and is sold separately. The explicit statement is on Tesla’s Saudi Arabia-localized support page, so check the equipment listed on your own order and confirm the policy for your market, model, and any applicable promotion.

What Tesla says is included with a new vehicle

Tesla Support states: “Mobile Connector is not included with new vehicle orders but is available for purchase at your nearest Tesla Service Center.” The page is localized for Saudi Arabia, so it supports Tesla’s stated position but does not establish that every region, promotion, or individual order has identical delivery contents. Review your order documents or ask Tesla to confirm what will arrive with your specific vehicle.

Here, “charger” means the equipment that connects the car to an electrical supply. A charging cable or connector is separate from the vehicle’s onboard charging hardware. Tesla describes its Mobile Connector as portable equipment for charging at home or away, while its Wall Connector is a separate, fixed home-charging product.

Which Tesla charging equipment can you buy?

Equipment Best fit What to know
Mobile Connector Portable charging, travel, or a home outlet that suits the vehicle and available adapter Tesla describes it as a portable option. Its bundle varies by regional product context: the support page describes a 6-meter cable, household-outlet adapter, and storage bag; Tesla’s North American shop page describes a 20-foot cable with NEMA 5-15 and NEMA 14-50 adapters and a storage bag. Check the exact local listing.
Wall Connector A dedicated, fixed home-charging setup Requires installation; Tesla lists up to 44 miles of range per hour depending on vehicle on its North American home-charging page.
Universal Wall Connector A fixed home setup where compatibility with other EV makes matters Tesla lists it for all EVs in North America. Installation and charging performance depend on the home’s electrical supply and vehicle.

Tesla says the Mobile Connector and standard Wall Connector use NACS and work only with Tesla vehicles; its Universal Wall Connector is the option listed for all EVs in North America. Tesla also notes that NACS was recognized in an SAE recommended practice under SAE J3400. That standards context does not change what is included in a vehicle order.

How quickly can a Mobile Connector charge?

Charging speed depends on the outlet, the matching adapter, electrical conditions, and vehicle. Tesla’s North American home-charging page gives these estimates:

  • Standard 120 V household outlet: 2–3 miles of range per hour with the Mobile Connector and included NEMA 5-15 adapter, depending on vehicle.
  • Suitable 240 V outlet: up to 30 miles of range per hour with the corresponding Mobile Connector adapter, depending on vehicle.
  • Wall Connector: up to 44 miles of range per hour, depending on vehicle and supply.

These are Tesla’s stated figures, not a guarantee of the result at a particular home. A 240 V outlet must be suitable for the intended charging load, and the connector adapter must match the outlet. Ask a qualified installer to assess the circuit rather than assuming an existing outlet is appropriate.

Should you choose a Mobile Connector or a Wall Connector?

Choose the Mobile Connector for portability

The Mobile Connector is the closer match if you want portable equipment for travel or occasional charging from a compatible outlet. A standard 120 V outlet is slow, so consider whether the available charging time and daily driving needs make that practical. If you plan to use a 240 V outlet, verify its suitability and the correct adapter with an electrician or qualified installer.

Choose a Wall Connector for a fixed home setup

Tesla recommends the Wall Connector for home use and describes it as offering the fastest charging and additional functionality, including scheduling and charging statistics. It is fixed equipment, so the decision includes installation—not just the device. Tesla’s North American page lists estimated installation ranges of $750–$1,500 for the Wall Connector and Universal Wall Connector, but these are not guaranteed quotes. A long wire run, panel upgrade, trenching, or pedestal can add work and cost.

Mobile Connector $300 $0–$1,500
Wall Connector $585 $750–$1,500
Universal Wall Connector $660 $750–$1,500

The Mobile Connector’s listed installation range reflects that it is portable equipment rather than a fixed wall unit; the actual cost depends on whether any electrical work is needed for the outlet or circuit you intend to use. Tesla says certified installers can provide quotes, and that a standard installation may include service and materials, an electrical permit, inspection, and an installation warranty. Site-specific work can add cost.

  4. Order and schedule: Tesla advises reviewing equipment options, consulting an installer, and ordering home-charging equipment before scheduling installation and vehicle delivery.
  5. Test the setup: Tesla advises testing the home-charging equipment with the installer.
