Its trim badge matters: the R/T Turbo paired twin-turbo power with all-wheel drive, while the other listed trims were front-wheel drive. Here are the key differences, year changes, and ways to check documentation and recalls for a specific car.
What was the Dodge Stealth?
Dodge sold the Stealth in the United States, while Mitsubishi built it. A contemporaneous 1995 report described the car as built by Mitsubishi and marketed by Chrysler; an official NHTSA corporate interpretation records that Mitsubishi bought Chrysler’s shares in Diamond Star Motors in 1994 and renamed the company effective July 1, 1995. NHTSA’s interpretation and the contemporaneous report help explain the corporate background, but the Stealth’s identity for buyers was a Dodge model.
The Stealth was closely related to Mitsubishi’s 3000GT. The shared relationship does not mean that every trim, feature, or year-specific specification was identical, so identify a car by its own model year and trim rather than assuming a 3000GT reference applies exactly.
What were the Dodge Stealth trims and specifications?
Consumer Guide Auto’s undated reference page, accessed in 2026, describes four initial variants and a transverse 3.0-liter V6 across the line. The horsepower figures below are that guide’s vehicle specifications, not a universal specification for every year or market. Consumer Guide Auto’s Stealth overview is a secondary source; confirm details for a specific car using year-appropriate documentation.

| Trim | Engine and reported output | Drive | Other reported details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | 3.0-liter V6; 164 hp (Consumer Guide Auto, undated page accessed 2026) | Front-wheel drive | Part of the initial four-trim lineup |
| ES | 3.0-liter DOHC V6; 222 hp (Consumer Guide Auto, undated page accessed 2026) | Front-wheel drive | Discontinued for 1994, according to the guide |
| R/T | 3.0-liter DOHC V6; 222 hp (Consumer Guide Auto, undated page accessed 2026) | Front-wheel drive | Distinct from the R/T Turbo |
| R/T Turbo | Intercooled twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6; 300 hp (Consumer Guide Auto, undated page accessed 2026) | Permanently engaged four-wheel drive, as described by the guide | Four-wheel steering; manual transmission only, with a six-speed introduced for 1994, according to the guide |
In this guide, “four-wheel drive” describes the R/T Turbo; it should not be confused with the front-wheel-drive base, ES, and R/T. Verify transmission, equipment, and engine configuration against the exact car, because the summary is not a complete year-by-year factory specification.
What changed by model year?
Consumer Guide Auto summarizes the following changes. Treat them as a secondary reference rather than a substitute for a year-specific factory brochure, service manual, or inspection.
| Model year | Reported change |
|---|---|
| 1992 | A manual tilt/removable glass sunroof became an option mid-year. |
| 1993 | Base models gained lower body-sill molding; base and ES cars could have an R/T-style rear spoiler. |
| 1994 | Exterior styling changed, a passenger-side airbag was added, the ES was discontinued, and the R/T Turbo received a six-speed gearbox and a reported 20-hp increase. |
| 1995 | Few changes were reported; chromed 18-inch aluminum wheels became an R/T Turbo option. |
| 1996 | Leather front seats became available on base models, and all three listed models received a body-color rear spoiler. |
The timing of the model’s end is described differently across sources: a factory-literature catalog says production ended early in 1996, while a contemporaneous 1995 newspaper report described plans to end the car after the 1996 model year. These statements need not describe the same milestone. A 1996 brochure is listed in the catalog, but the sources here do not establish exact production totals. The factory-literature catalog and the 1995 report provide context, not a definitive production record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you research a specific Stealth?
Start with the car’s model year, trim badge, engine, transmission, and drivetrain. Then compare those details with documentation that explicitly covers the relevant system and configuration.

- Use technical documents selectively. The archived 1991 Stealth Technical Information Manual says it introduces the vehicle’s specifications, features, construction, and functions. It is useful for understanding the model, but it is not automatically a repair manual for every year or system. Stealth 316’s technical library lists manuals and parts references.
- Match repair coverage before relying on it. A searchable AWD transmission manual covers 1991–1996 Dodge Stealth R/T Turbo and related 3000GT VR-4 applications. Its preface identifies it as a volunteer translation and warns that repair procedures are not for unskilled people. Confirm the year, trim, drivetrain, and repair system before using it. The AWD transmission manual provides its coverage and caveat.
- Check a particular car’s recall status by VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall resources and VIN lookup rather than assuming a campaign’s existence tells you whether a vehicle was repaired. NHTSA recalls provides the official tools.
For an actual purchase or restoration decision, compare cars using model year, trim, engine, transmission, drivetrain, condition, service documentation, and recall completion. The references cited here do not establish present-day prices, reliability rankings, or current parts availability.
